The sun hung high in the sky, a true winter warming sun in every sense of the word.
It was December, and quite a few people on the street had started wearing cotton-padded jackets, which made Zhu Niao and Gou Yu’s outfits stand out especially.
Oh no, even without the clothes that set them apart from everyone else, Zhu Niao’s face alone would have drawn attention.
Zhu Niao had a trench coat draped over her pure white evening gown.
When they came out, they happened to run into the Store Manager Lady, who was hesitating at the entrance about where to go.
The red-brown-haired girl took one look at Gou Yu, all dressed up, and scolded him for not knowing how to take care of someone.
Then she grabbed a trench coat and put it on Zhu Niao.
Ah, but the Store Manager Lady herself, wearing a sleeveless slit red evening gown, had no coat to wear.
At that moment, Zhu Niao admired the Store Manager Lady even more.
She figured she must be on the same level as Liu Liu—someone with a body that could tough out a menstrual period without any issues, standing in the December winter wind in just an evening gown as a minor.
Of course, Zhu Niao was also curious why the Store Manager Lady stood at the entrance in the cold wind instead of waiting in the car.
She said her car had been taken by that old man who went fishing, and her driver had been taken along too.
It was a really sad thing.
She said she originally thought that even if she left her bag on the ground at a place like this, no one would touch it.
Of course, the other way to put it was that anyone who did touch it probably wasn’t quite human.
That was understandable too. If Gou Yu’s father wanted to drive his own car, he’d have to get the keys from Gou Yu’s mother, and then he’d probably not escape.
Zhu Niao never asked why Gou Yu’s father didn’t ride with someone else. After all, they were all going to the same place to fish.
Gou Yu’s answer was that the others usually had to sneak out away from their wives, and his father was the one providing the transportation.
Birds of a feather really did flock together.
But then the Car Selling Guy showed up. He seemed to have forgotten something.
After a discussion with the Store Manager Lady and even a round of rock-paper-scissors, he accepted his bad luck and acted as the driver for the Store Manager Lady, taking her away.
“You still haven’t told me where you’re taking me.”
Zhu Niao said, retaliating by lightly pinching Gou Yu’s fingers like a spoiled little wife.
“You’ll know when we get there.”
Gou Yu was still being secretive, refusing to give even a hint. He just pulled his princess through the subway station.
The crowd was flowing, but Gou Yu didn’t walk too fast. He was probably being considerate of Zhu Niao.
He hit the perfect balance—not leisurely strolling, but not so fast that she’d be out of breath after two steps. You could say the Phys Ed Rep had skill.
They clashed with the surrounding crowd, looking like they had just run out of a wedding.
Zhu Niao was like the bride, and Gou Yu the blond guy who had stolen her away.
Maybe if Zhu Niao had struggled or cried even a little, the passengers around them would have pounced and taken Gou Yu down right there.
As they stepped into the subway car, Zhu Niao looked at the gazes coming from the others and instinctively tightened her grip on Gou Yu’s hand.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
Gou Yu said quietly, then pulled Zhu Niao to sit down in an empty seat.
By now, Zhu Niao seemed completely used to living as a girl. Even when sitting down, she habitually smoothed her dress and sat with her legs together.
Maybe it was a habit formed from sitting directly on the floor at home and freezing her butt, or from the time Gou Yu mysteriously started tying his shoelaces.
Of course, she knew he was just trying to help her quickly develop this self-protective habit, but she couldn’t entirely rule out his personal motives.
The subway started with a jolt, like recoil, pushing Zhu Niao and Gou Yu backward.
But Gou Yu’s footing was probably better—he caught Zhu Niao as she fell toward him without losing his balance at all.
She was held in his arms, and the trench coat on her got a little messed up from the motion.
Actually, Zhu Niao wasn’t cold. She had already figured it out.
Not only was this white dress more ornate and thick than a typical gown, but she had also stuck hand warmers inside when she put it on.
In fact, after putting on the trench coat that the Store Manager Lady had kindly given her, she was even a little warm.
But Gou Yu seemed to really want her to wear it.
Probably because Zhu Niao in her white dress was too eye-catching, and Gou Yu felt like his treasure was being peeked at by others.
So Zhu Niao just decided not to take it off. It wasn’t uncomfortably hot anyway.
The subway ran fast, like it could catch up with time.
Unfortunately, all they could see was the bottomless darkness and the occasional billboard flashing by.
If it were like those youth TV dramas, this would be when the train burst through the tunnel, leaving the darkness behind.
Ahead would be birdsong and flowers, bright scenery, colorful leaves and petals swaying, and gentle sunshine brushing past.
Occasionally, someone might gasp in surprise, because Zhu Niao, the princess, would lean her head on Gou Yu’s shoulder, close her eyes, and smile with her lips pursed.
Like they were cheering for their love.
But there was none of that. Just endless darkness and the occasional advertisement flashing before their eyes, maybe one or two that looked familiar.
It was very quiet. Everyone seemed to have their own lives.
Their fingertips touched. One beat after another, their hearts were about to sync.
The same lavender fragrance ran through the two of them from start to finish.
Gou Yu reached out and gently pinched Zhu Niao’s cheek.
It was soft and squishy.
Normally, she would bare her teeth at Gou Yu like a wild beast, or even lightly bite him.
But today, she only moved closer, as if to melt his heart with the flame called love.
Zhu Niao wasn’t like Liu Liu with her thousand charms, nor like Ye Qingchang, that proud flower of solitude.
She was just the most real, the girl carrying the soul named Zhu Niao.
Leaning gently against him on this empty seat in the subway car.
This was how it should be. Their lives weren’t as dazzling and colorful as in TV dramas.
But when it came to happiness, they were about the same.
Right now was when the two of them felt the happiest.
“You still haven’t said where you’re taking me.”
“If you keep asking, I’m afraid I won’t be able to hold it in and I’ll tell you.”
“Oh.” Zhu Niao covered Gou Yu’s hand with her other hand. “So are you going to kidnap me?”
“Not kidnapping. Just a plain snatch.” Gou Yu chuckled.
“Heinous.” Zhu Niao pressed herself against Gou Yu. “Then I’m in your hands, stinky kidnapper.”
