Good thing she hadn’t given them out yet. No way could she give these to Bo Jiangxin now. She’d have to buy a new batch for him next time.
At least Wang Sicheng was man enough to admit his mistakes. “That won’t do—I can’t just take your Puffs for free. I’ll treat you to a meal at the School Cafeteria to make up for them, how about it?”
Xiang Di ignored him. She didn’t have the patience for every boy that she did for Bo Jiangxin.
Wang Sicheng tried again, “Order whatever you want—if you can eat the whole cafeteria, I’ll pay for it.”
She still ignored him. In her mind: I have no interest in the cafeteria food.
Glancing at a certain empty seat, she thought, I’m only interested in Bo Jiangxin’s big banana—too bad you can’t treat me to that.
At that moment, the big banana in question, Bo Jiangxin, returned from the office. Lunch break was already over.
The first Physics class of the afternoon had already been going for over ten minutes. But since it was Bo Jiangxin who was late, the teacher didn’t say a word and just let him in.
Scheduling Physics as the first class of the afternoon was the curriculum planner’s biggest blunder. Hardly anyone in the class could keep their head up.
And as luck would have it, their Physics Teacher was especially boring.
His expertise was top-notch, but the more brilliant he was, the worse his teaching skills were. He constantly went off-topic and over the syllabus.
Luckily, the students of 97 Class were solid at Physics and could study on their own.
With the afternoon atmosphere and the teacher’s monotone, it felt like some kind of powerful sleeping gas was wafting through the air.
The room was quiet—only the wind outside and the rustle of test papers could be heard.
Bo Jiangxin spun his gel pen in his hand, staring blankly at the Physics problems on his paper.
Wang Sicheng was a lot quieter than Bo Jiangxin had imagined—maybe because the teacher had warned him earlier.
The whole day, except for relaying messages to Ye Minjia, he hardly bothered him at all.
Which was fine. As long as he avoided physical contact with Wang Sicheng, Bo Jiangxin could tolerate him.
No sooner had he thought that than Wang Sicheng, for some unknown reason, suddenly stretched his arm and bumped Bo Jiangxin’s elbow.
Turning to look, Bo Jiangxin saw that Wang Sicheng had dozed off, propping his chin up as he tried to stay awake. Finally, he couldn’t hold out and collapsed onto the desk.
Bo Jiangxin was about to move his arm when he suddenly heard Wang Sicheng cursing in his mind.
[Shit, I’m starving and exhausted. Spent all noon playing basketball—didn’t even eat lunch.]
The next second, Wang Sicheng shot up from the desk.
[Almost forgot! I’ve got that Puff Xiang Di gave me!]
Wang Sicheng quickly withdrew his arm and started rummaging through his desk.
Bo Jiangxin couldn’t hear his thoughts anymore, but before they vanished, he’d clearly heard Xiang Di’s name.
He turned to watch as Wang Sicheng pulled out a paper bag from under the desk.
Sure enough, it was the exclusive paper bag from the Bakery near Xiang Di’s home.
Bo Jiangxin’s face darkened.
So where was his Puff?
Wang Sicheng opened the bag, stuck his nose in and took a deep whiff, then, acting all sneaky, grabbed a Puff with his hand and stuffed it into his mouth, quickly covering his mouth with one hand as he chewed.
Bo Jiangxin:
Wang Sicheng ate two or three like this before noticing Bo Jiangxin watching him.
Feeling strangely guilty, Wang Sicheng grinned and held out a Puff. “Want one?”
Seeing Wang Sicheng grabbing the Puff with his hands—who knows if he washed them or not—Bo Jiangxin frowned in discomfort.
“No thanks.” After a pause, Bo Jiangxin asked, “Where’d you get those Puffs?”
Even though he’d already heard Wang Sicheng’s thoughts and knew these were from Xiang Di, Bo Jiangxin didn’t know why he was asking anyway.
Sure enough, Wang Sicheng replied, “Xiang Di gave them to me.”
Bo Jiangxin was still frowning. “Why’d she give you Puffs?”
The interrogating tone, the blunt question, left Wang Sicheng speechless.
He couldn’t say it was because he’d grabbed a Puff with unwashed hands at lunch, and Xiang Di had given up on him and handed him the whole bag.
That would be too embarrassing. Wang Sicheng said, “No reason—she just gave them to me.”
Before he’d gone to the office, Xiang Di had given out one per person, but to Wang Sicheng, she’d just handed over the whole bag for no reason.
She was especially considerate to the new mixed-blood student, but Wang Sicheng? Why him?
Was she so indiscriminate, into any type?
Bo Jiangxin obviously didn’t believe his nonsense. He smirked, “She just handed you the whole bag for no reason? What, is she doing charity?”
“Hey, Bo Jiangxin, I respect you as the top student and all, but that’s going too far. What do you mean, charity? I’m not begging here.”
Wang Sicheng huffed. “Anyway, we’re good friends, so she gave me the whole bag. Problem?”
Bo Jiangxin narrowed his eyes. “You’re good friends?”
“Yeah,” Wang Sicheng said confidently.
After all, he was planning to treat Xiang Di to a meal. If they hit it off, they’d be friends for sure—so it wasn’t really a lie.
Wang Sicheng thought so to himself.
Bo Jiangxin asked coolly, “How good?”
Wang Sicheng:
Why did it feel like he was being interrogated?
“Bo Jiangxin, Wang Sicheng, I’ve been watching you two for a while now,” said the Physics Teacher from the podium.
Wang Sicheng being called out was nothing new, but Bo Jiangxin getting named was a surprise.
Instantly, everyone in class perked up, curious eyes turning their way.
Xiang Di, who’d been dozing off, reflexively looked over the moment she heard Bo Jiangxin’s name.
Everyone was shocked—Wang Sicheng was chatty, sure, but even he could get Bo Jiangxin to talk in class?
How dare he corrupt the academic god. Wang Sicheng was done for—he’d be scolded to death by the Physics Teacher.
Even Wang Sicheng himself thought so. He figured the teacher would complain to the homeroom teacher later, and he’d get a tongue-lashing.
But the Physics Teacher was unpredictable. He sighed and aimed straight at Bo Jiangxin.
“Bo Jiangxin, I know you don’t need to listen to class anymore. I won’t force you. If you’re bored, go ahead and nap, or play with your phone or earphones. But Wang Sicheng still needs to listen—his Physics grades have lots of room for improvement. You can’t distract him.”
Bo Jiangxin didn’t look pleased at being called out, and Wang Sicheng just wanted to crawl into a hole.
Teacher, it looks like you’re lecturing Bo Jiangxin, but really, you’re just humiliating me.
There were scattered giggles in the classroom. The little interruption came at just the right time—no one was sleepy anymore.
The Physics Teacher said blandly, “Good, now that you’re all awake, let’s continue.”
Xiang Di cast a distracted glance at Wang Sicheng’s side of the room, suddenly feeling a little jealous.
She’d been Bo Jiangxin’s seatmate, but he barely talked to her—how come it was different for Wang Sicheng?
No, she needed to ask for advice on how to get along with Bo Jiangxin.
When class finally ended, Xiang Di immediately went to chat with Wang Sicheng.
But opening with a direct question about “how to talk” would be too obvious—especially with Bo Jiangxin still there. So Xiang Di decided to be roundabout.
She smiled, “Was the Puff good?”
“Delicious,” Wang Sicheng said. “Hey, let me treat you to dinner in the cafeteria tonight, okay?”
Normally, she wouldn’t care about a free meal, but eating together would give her a chance to ask what he and Bo Jiangxin talked about in class. Xiang Di nodded, “Sure, let’s—”
“Xiang Di.”
A cold voice interrupted her.
Xiang Di turned her head—it was Bo Jiangxin.
He put down his pen and said directly, “Come outside for a moment.”
Xiang Di didn’t know what he wanted, but she always listened to Bo Jiangxin’s requests.
Before leaving, she even reminded Wang Sicheng, “Don’t forget about dinner tonight.”
Wang Sicheng called out, “Got it, go ahead.”
Just like that, they made dinner plans right in front of Bo Jiangxin.
Bo Jiangxin left without a word, and Xiang Di hurried after him.
Once they were gone, Ye Minjia banged on the desk and said to Liang Qianqian, showing off, “Still think I’m the reincarnation of Detective Mouri? I’m clearly the Edo River Conan China Branch! Kudo Shinichi China Branch! Washing Machine China Branch!”
Liang Qianqian:
Idiot.
Xiang Di followed Bo Jiangxin out of the classroom, watching as he led her to the stairwell at the end of the corridor.
It was a spot couples usually used for trysts. Xiang Di didn’t know why Bo Jiangxin brought her here, but she certainly didn’t think he was going to confess.
Sure enough, the first thing out of Bo Jiangxin’s mouth wasn’t “I like you,” but—
“Where’s my Puff?”
Xiang Di made a small noise and looked down, feigning ignorance. “What Puff?”
With her head lowered, Xiang Di suddenly felt her head being tilted up by a hand.
Bo Jiangxin reached out, his broad palm pressing on her little head, forcing her to look up at him.
Tsk. He still couldn’t hear her thoughts.
Everyone else, yes—just not her.
Bo Jiangxin told himself not to care. She’d bought the Puffs, so she could give them to whoever she wanted. It was none of his business. And she’d never said they were for him, anyway.
But as he bent down to meet her shining eyes, what came out was: “You gave them all to Wang Sicheng, didn’t you?”
Feeling the pressure from above, Xiang Di’s head was spinning.
Oh my god, was this the legendary head pat? She didn’t know why he was suddenly patting her head, but it was making her heart race.
“Xiang… Di.”
He wasn’t sure if it was her daydreaming again or the fact that he couldn’t hear her thoughts that annoyed him more. Since she liked him, shouldn’t she at least pay attention when he was talking?
Bo Jiangxin was at his wits’ end. He really wanted to give her head a couple of hard knocks to vent: “Why is it that every time I talk to you, you look so absent-minded?”
