“Lin Mo, I remember your home is on the other side of H City, right?”
Zhang Yu frowned as he asked this after Lin Mo hung up the phone.
“Yeah, that’s right.”
Lin Mo nodded.
The government-assigned relief housing for him and his sister was in the west of the city, while his university was in the east-dozens of kilometers apart.
“Then you…”
“I’ll go!”
Lin Mo already knew what he was about to say.
He was well aware of the danger, that it might even be a suicide mission.
But he had to go.
He couldn’t not go.
Xiao Ya was his sister—his only sister.
Without him, she would be terrified.
“Ah…”
Zhang Yu sighed and didn’t press further.
In his eyes, this was nearly impossible.
But more than that, he was preoccupied with the information revealed by that phone call.
He took out his own phone and checked the signal bar at the top of the screen.
“As expected, the signal’s gone too…”
This had already been evident when Lin Mo made the call earlier.
The other two also pulled out their phones-without exception, their signals were dead.
“First the internet, now the signal?”
Zhang Yu’s frown deepened.
“And judging from Lin Mo’s call with his sister, at the very least… zombies have appeared across the entire city.”
“What’s the point of talking about this?”
Zhou Kai snapped, shaking his arm in frustration.
“We can’t even step outside right now! I haven’t eaten in almost a day!”
“There’s still some chocolate…”
Wang Jie muttered quietly.
“What good is that little bit of chocolate? If we don’t figure out a way to get food, we’ll all starve!”
Zhou Kai’s words were harsh, but they addressed the immediate problem they all faced-food.
Without it, they wouldn’t last until the police arrived.
But right now, who dared to go out and search for supplies?
A night had passed, and the noises outside the window had faded.
Those who could hide in their dorms or elsewhere had already done so.
Those who hadn’t made it in time were mostly dead by now.
The world seemed to have fallen into an eerie silence—the kind that only amplified the fear gnawing at everyone’s hearts.
Because no one knew when or where a zombie might suddenly lunge out and drag them down.
Despite his outburst, Zhou Kai could only stay put in the dorm like everyone else.
The tiny piece of chocolate, barely the size of a finger, was split among the four of them.
Far from satisfying their hunger, it only made it worse.
With empty stomachs, none of them had the energy to do much. They just lay on their beds, lost in their own thoughts.
Then, Wang Jie suddenly spoke up: “Shouldn’t we… reinforce the door?”
The moment he said it, everyone’s eyes turned toward the dorm entrance.
The door was covered with a metal layer, which looked sturdy enough—but whether it could withstand a zombie attack was anyone’s guess.
“How?”
Zhou Kai asked.
Lin Mo scanned the room, his gaze settling on the desktop computers.
“Move the computers to block the door. And the suitcases…”
“Got it.”
Zhang Yu nodded and immediately got to work without another word.
The other three also got out of bed to help.
Soon, the space behind the dorm door was piled high with belongings-four large suitcases placed horizontally at the bottom, with computer monitors and towers stacked on top.
Though they weren’t sure if this would actually help, it at least gave them some peace of mind.
After working for a while, noon approached, and exhaustion set in.
Combined with their sleepless night, drowsiness washed over them like a tide.
Zhou Kai was the first to succumb, followed by Wang Jie, and finally, Lin Mo and Zhang Yu also fell asleep.
They slept for over ten hours straight…
“Bang! Bang! Bang—!”
Lin Mo was jolted awake by deafening knocks on the door.
Groggily opening his eyes, he felt a surge of irritation and instinctively shouted, “Who is it?”
Only then did he remember this was the apocalypse, a world overrun by zombies.
In the dim light, Lin Mo exchanged glances with the others, who had also woken up, and saw nothing but shock and fear in their eyes.
“Who’s there?”
Lin Mo mustered his courage and called out again.
No response came from outside-only the relentless, pounding knocks continued.
“It’s the zombies!”
Lin Mo immediately concluded.
The undead were right outside the door, less than two meters away from them.
Panic seized everyone.
They had no idea what to do.
The knocking grew louder and more frantic, never stopping, and faint growls could be heard from the other side, shattering the last shred of hope in their hearts.
What now?
That was the urgent question now staring the four of them in the face…
