Chapter 3: Reincarnation System and My Sister’s Phone Call

After a sleepless night, Lin Mo couldn’t help but yawn. 

The other three also looked haggard, with dark circles clearly visible under their eyes. 

Yet despite this, none of them felt sleepy. 

No one knew when zombies might come, or… whether any of the four in this dorm room might suddenly turn into one.

Splashing some water haphazardly on his face, Lin Mo sat silently on the edge of the bed without saying a word.

“The police… they’ll come, right?” 

Wang Jie’s uncertain voice drew everyone’s attention, and the word “police” seemed to possess some magical power, instantly lifting their spirits.

Yes, with the government in charge, it wouldn’t be long before the police mobilized in force to suppress those man-eating zombies. 

Maybe even the military would get involved. 

Then they’d be safe.

“That’s right! As long as we stay in the dorm, we’ll be rescued soon…” Zhou Kai said excitedly.

A spark of hope flashed in Zhang Yu’s eyes too, but compared to the other two, his thoughts were more comprehensive.

“With something this big happening, the government will surely deploy all available resources for disaster relief. 

But the problem is, we still don’t know where these zombies came from, or how widespread this outbreak is. If… just if, this is happening globally…”

Zhang Yu didn’t finish his sentence, but the other three shuddered at the implication. 

Globally… If that were true, even the government might not be able to…

“N-no way, right?” 

Wang Jie’s voice trembled. 

“If it’s worldwide, wouldn’t that mean humanity is doomed?”

“Impossible, don’t think like that… The police will come soon,” Zhou Kai shook his head, though his expression betrayed his lack of conviction. 

After all, they were completely in the dark about these suddenly appearing zombies, and with the internet down, none of them knew what was happening outside.

“Shh !”

At that moment, Lin Mo suddenly raised a finger to his lips, signaling the others to be quiet.

“Lin Mo, what is it?” 

Wang Jie looked at him in confusion.

“Did… did you guys hear something?” 

Lin Mo’s expression was strange as he asked with slightly parted lips.

“Hear what? No…”

Wang Jie frowned and listened for a moment before shaking his head.

“I didn’t hear anything either,” Zhang Yu agreed.

“What nonsense, trying to scare us? You must have misheard,” Zhou Kai said impatiently.

Lin Mo didn’t respond. 

The others were right the surroundings were completely silent, with no sound at all. 

Yet Lin Mo had definitely heard something strange.

“Beep—” 

Suddenly, the exact same sound rang out again. 

This time, Lin Mo clearly heard it—the sound was coming from inside his mind.

“Beep-Detected spiritual energy fluctuations. Reincarnation System activating…” 

A very mechanical female voice spoke these words before falling silent again.

“What’s this Reincarnation System?” 

Just as Lin Mo was puzzled, the voice sounded again:

“Ding-System activated. Scanning host information…”

Then, a string of data suddenly appeared in Lin Mo’s mind.

Lin Mo’s expression grew increasingly strange.

This string of data looked exactly like… a game?

“Lin Mo, what’s wrong with you?”

At this moment, Zhang Yu frowned, looking at Lin Mo with concern.

“Oh, I… I’m fine, just a little scared,” Lin Mo quickly replied.

“Hmm.”

Zhang Yu nodded, not saying anything more. Who wouldn’t be scared right now?

The dorm room fell into silence again, and Lin Mo immediately turned his attention back to the data in his mind.

Clearly, this string of data represented his current physical condition—and it was pretty weak. 

Not surprising, considering Lin Mo spent all his time gaming and watching anime, never exercising or even leaving his room. It’d be weird if his physique were good.

“This experience bar…” Lin Mo hesitated. 

If this so-called Reincarnation System really worked like the games he used to play, did that mean he could level up?

What benefits would leveling up bring? And how could he gain experience points?

Just then, an unexpected phone call disrupted Lin Mo’s thoughts.

He pulled out his phone, which displayed the name “Xiao Ya.”

Lin Mo shuddered and immediately answered the call.

“Hey, bro…” A somewhat unclear voice came from the other end.

“Xiao Ya!” Lin Mo said excitedly.

“How… how are things over there?”

“If you’re asking like that, then it must be happening there too…” 

Call it a sibling’s intuition. 

Even though Lin Mo’s words were disjointed, his younger sister quickly grasped his meaning and responded with a bitter laugh.

“Xiao Ya, are there zombies there too?” 

Lin Mo’s heart tightened. 

His worst fear had come true.

“Ah…” Lin Xiao Ya didn’t answer, only sighing.

“Xiao Ya, your side—”

“Bro? You… what? I can’t… hear…” The voice suddenly became indistinct. 

Lin Mo glanced at his phone screen-only two signal bars remained.

There was no time for details. 

Lin Mo urgently spoke into the phone, “Xiao Ya, listen carefully. Stay at home and don’t go anywhere. 

Don’t open the door for anyone. 

Wait for me to come find you, understand?”

“Bro… got it.”

Xiao Ya’s fragmented reply came through before the signal bars disappeared completely.

Putting down his phone, Lin Mo’s mind was in turmoil. 

Both he and Xiaoya were orphans with no parents. 

Now that disaster had suddenly struck, how could he not worry about Xiaoya being all alone? 

But to make matters worse, Xiaoya was on the other side of the city.

No matter how anxious he was, given the current situation outside, there was no way he could get to her.

“Thank goodness it’s Saturday and Xiaoya’s at home, otherwise…”

A wave of dread washed over Lin Mo. Xiaoya was the only family he had left!
