Luo Tian appeared in a residential building not far from the rented apartment.
Lin Lin was cooking.
She had just rented this place that afternoon, paying two months’ rent upfront. It cost her more than two thousand.
More than two thousand. It hurt, but she had no choice.
She needed to take care of Luo Tian. She had just come back from the hospital that afternoon, and her legs were swollen and numb from exhaustion.
All she saw was that girl—Luo Tiantian’s girlfriend—going in and out.
She went out in the morning, came back at noon, went out again in the afternoon, and returned at night.
But she never saw Luo Tian.
Lin Lin recalled their high school days.
Luo Tiantian had treated her very well.
He brought her breakfast in the morning, saved her a seat at noon, and walked her back to the dorm at night.
When she was sick, he skipped class to buy medicine for her.
Back then, she thought all of that was only natural.
Didn’t he like her?
If he liked her, then of course he should treat her well.
Later, she got into college, went to a new school, met new classmates, and saw a broader world.
Someone like Luo Tiantian—a poor boy—was not from the same world as her.
So she gradually grew distant, not even bothering to formally break up.
They had never officially been together anyway, so there was no need, right?
College offered a bigger world, better people. That was what she thought at the time.
But later, she realized she was not worthy of those people she once thought were better.
And so she began to miss Luo Tiantian.
It was after that, following Tiantian’s grandfather’s passing, that Lin Lin found two letters among the things her grandmother had given her.
Two letters, written by two elders.
Both letters mentioned her, saying she was a good child. They hoped she and Luo Tiantian would end up together and have a child. At that time, there would be a sum of money to support their small family.
Lin Lin later checked.
The money in the account had never been touched. It had been accumulating with interest.
The letters also said that the two elders had never given Luo Tian money openly, for fear he might turn bad.
So they left the money for him to use after marriage or for starting a business.
That was why they did not give it to him directly, but instead left a will and a letter after their deaths, containing the bank account and password.
However, it seemed that Luo Tian had never gone through the elders’ belongings and did not know about this at all.
And although Luo Tian was a poor boy, perhaps he had a promising future?
If she could not find a suitable partner, it might be better to choose someone who loved her.
Lin Lin considered herself very practical.
That was her true reason for coming.
But what she had not expected was—
Luo Tian now had a girlfriend, and that girl was very pretty.
Lin Lin bit her lip.
Why?
Why could someone like that poor boy find such a beautiful girlfriend?
She had been scolded harshly by that woman the night before, and in a fit of anger, she completely broke down.
Yes, she had been in the wrong, but she had truly come back hoping to reconcile.
What was wrong with giving her another chance?
Lin Lin asked around, contacting people she had known before.
Finally, she learned from a group chat that he seemed to be ill and was in the hospital.
But when she called the doctor, it did not help.
She would wait again tomorrow.
No matter how long it took.
As long as she could see him, she had a way.
She was still confident in her “advantage in appearance.”
Back in high school, Luo Tiantian had liked her so much. Surely now…
Surely there were still some lingering feelings?
Wasn’t it said that a first love was unbeatable?
If Luo Tian saw her old photos and remembered those feelings…
As long as she took the initiative, it would be impossible for him to feel nothing.
Lin Lin had to try.
Naturally, she also had to think it through.
Given the current situation, she truly intended to marry Luo Tian.
After eating and washing the dishes, Lin Lin sat by the window, looking at the building across from her.
Tomorrow she would get up early and wait there. She refused to believe she would not see him.
Lin Lin closed the curtains and lay down on the bed.
Her phone lit up.
It was a message from her mother.
Mom: Lin Lin, have you found Tian yet?
Lin Lin stared at the message and bit her lip.
She had not told her mother the real reason she came back.
She had only said she wanted to reconcile with Luo Tian.
After all, he had treated her so well in high school. It would be a pity to miss that.
Her mother supported her.
“I watched that boy grow up. He’s honest and reliable. If you can be with him, I’ll feel at ease.”
Lin Lin replied and turned her phone over.
…
The next day, at six in the morning.
Lin Lin was woken by her alarm.
After a quick wash and changing into sportswear, she went out.
At six in the morning, the neighborhood was quiet, with only a few elderly people exercising.
She walked to the flower bed across from Luo Tian’s building and sat down.
Six thirty.
Seven.
Seven thirty.
The sun rose, its light slanting down.
More people gradually appeared at the entrance of the neighborhood.
Parents taking children to school, people rushing to work, and delivery workers in uniform.
Eight.
Nine.
Her legs went numb from sitting. She stood up, walked a bit, then sat back down.
Her phone rang.
Mom: Have you found Tian? Have you eaten? Do not go hungry.
Lin Lin shoved the phone back into her pocket irritably.
Ten.
The building door finally opened.
A girl in a white T-shirt walked out.
Lin Lin’s eyes lit up slightly as she stood.
It was Luo Tian’s girlfriend.
The girl had her head lowered, looking a bit listless.
Lin Lin followed her.
This girlfriend claimed she had liked him since high school?
Was that true?
Especially since she knew he was sick—he would not go out much, right?
The girl walked slowly.
Lin Lin followed behind her, keeping a distance of more than ten meters.
They reached a bus stop, and she followed along.
Then they arrived at the entrance of a hospital.
Lin Lin’s heart tightened.
It was the same hospital where she had called looking for the doctor.
The girl walked into the outpatient hall.
Lin Lin followed inside.
The hall was crowded, filled with the smell of disinfectant.
She looked around and saw the white figure squeeze into an elevator.
She hurried over and stared at the floor indicator above.
The elevator stopped at the seventh floor.
Lin Lin waited for the next one.
…
Seventh floor.
Inpatient department.
Lin Lin stepped out of the elevator and followed the room number Su Wan had sent, searching all the way.
Seven ten.
The door was slightly ajar.
She gently pushed it open.
Su Wan was sitting by the bedside, her eyes red. When she saw her enter, she immediately stood up.
“Tian…”
“What happened?”
Luo Tian quickly walked over and looked at the person on the bed.
Su Wenjun was leaning against the headboard. Her complexion looked fine, just a bit weak.
“Auntie, what happened?”
Su Wenjun looked at her and smiled. “It’s nothing, nothing. I was probably just too tired lately and fell asleep.”
“Fell asleep?”
Luo Tian looked at Su Wan.
Su Wan bit her lip. “This morning, when I tried to wake her up, no matter what I did, she would not wake. I thought…”
“We brought her to the hospital. The doctor checked and said there was no problem. All indicators were normal.”
“Then she woke up on her own, as if nothing had happened.”
“The doctor also found it strange, saying they had never seen such a situation before.”
“It was like a deep sleep, but no matter how we tried, she would not wake—almost like a coma.”
“They said they need to observe her further.”
Su Wan’s voice trembled slightly.
Luo Tian reached out and held her hand, comforting her. “Don’t be afraid. Mom is fine. She was probably just too tired lately.”
“You know, yesterday that surgery failed, and the patient’s family caused trouble. It was mentally exhausting.”
“Then she had dinner with you, came back, and played games for a while. She must have been too tired and slept deeply.”
“What game?”
