“Name.”
“Murong Qiuyu.”
“Gender.”
“Female.”
“What was your previous job?”
Murong Qiuyu paused for a moment.
The police officer across the table had his brow furrowed in a deep scowl. The older officer beside him, however, looked at her with a calm, peaceful expression. It was the classic good cop, bad cop routine.
Murong Qiuyu thought for a bit. She felt she should be the one asking the police questions, but she wasn’t sure if it was allowed.
“Um… are you sure your file can record all of it?”
“Record all of it?” The younger officer laughed, his eyes wide as if he had heard a massive joke. “If we can’t fit it all, we’ll just open a separate page for you.”
“Alright.” Murong Qiuyu nodded.
With the officer’s guarantee, she no longer worried that they wouldn’t be able to keep track.
She began to speak with the speed of a high-speed chant. “Chef, waiter, online shill, customer service, delivery person, game booster, gaming companion, magical girl…”
Murong Qiuyu’s face remained as calm as a still well. While the officer wiped sweat from his forehead, the ballpoint pen in his hand moved so fast it left afterimages.
Dense text quickly filled the paper, and the officer gradually lost his momentum.
“Wait!”
At that moment, the older officer interrupted Murong Qiuyu’s rhythm.
“You just said… you’re a magical girl?”
“Yes, I am a magical girl.”
Murong Qiuyu expressionlessly searched her person. After rummaging through her pockets for a long while, she fished out a crystal pendant.
The diamond-shaped crystal refracted the dim light brilliantly, drawing the officers’ curious gazes.
“Well? Is this enough proof?” Murong Qiuyu asked in a flat tone.
“It is not,” the officer rejected. “Even if you have Magical Girl Xuan’s transformation device, it doesn’t mean you are her.”
The officer waved his hand and pulled a handful of pendants from his own pocket. He let them dangle in the air; the hanging diamond crystals were virtually indistinguishable from Murong Qiuyu’s.
Murong Qiuyu’s eyes widened slightly.
“Yours is probably just merch. Young people love this stuff,” the older officer added.
Murong Qiuyu’s eyes grew even wider.
“Alright, just wait for your guardian to arrive. Just be more careful in the future; this is just a formal record.” The older officer waved his hand and signaled the younger officer.
The young man stood up to fetch three cups of water.
When Lin Xiaojue arrived at the police station, she found Murong Qiuyu already sitting in the lobby.
“Mama.”
Murong Qiuyu turned her head and gave her a sweet smile.
Lin Xiaojue froze on the spot.
‘Wh-what? Mama?’
While she was stunned, Murong Qiuyu had already approached, pressing her body — which was over ten centimeters taller — against her.
Being squeezed between those soft, snowy peaks made Lin Xiaojue even more dazed.
‘How did Murong Qiuyu recognize me?’
‘I clearly have my camouflage on.’
‘My black-haired, black-eyed self shouldn’t be that easy to recognize, right?’
‘Could it be that you also — ?’
“Jue, I’ve memorized all your body measurements, so don’t worry. It won’t hurt to be my mother just once,” Murong Qiuyu whispered into her ear as she ended the extremely intimate hug.
“Are your eyes rulers?” Lin Xiaojue felt exceptionally uncomfortable.
“Be my mother just once, please.”
“If you don’t, I’ll keep holding you until Su Yaqing finds us together and goes on a rampage. Then we’ll both be in trouble.”
Murong Qiuyu’s cold voice rang in her ear, and Lin Xiaojue simply couldn’t win against her.
Just then, the officer walked over.
Seeing the “mother and daughter” embracing, he tactfully stopped, giving the two of them some space.
“Um, you’re Murong Qiuyu’s mother, right? Your child has participated in some rather unsafe activities recently. Please give her a good talking-to when you get home.”
“She won’t have a criminal record, will she?” Lin Xiaojue asked, playing along.
“No, don’t worry about that. Just sign here and you can go.”
After signing at the service window, Lin Xiaojue led Murong Qiuyu out with a dark expression.
“Mama, where are we going next?”
Murong Qiuyu naturally took Lin Xiaojue’s hand, her face devoid of emotion.
“Home,” Lin Xiaojue gritted out through her teeth.
“Okay. I’ll listen to everything Mama says. Mama is the best.”
“I say… do you really think I’m your mother?”
“No.”
“No?” Lin Xiaojue’s brows furrowed, her eyes nearly spitting fire. “Then why the hell did you put my age down as 42?! Do I look that old?! My dear daughter!”
“It was necessary for the plot. There was no other way.” Murong Qiuyu spread her hands and shook her head, her expression unchanging.
“By the way, where did you find this part-time job that landed you in a police station?”
The two of them walked along the sidewalk under an umbrella.
It had been a long time since Lin Xiaojue had shared such an unguarded conversation.
She didn’t need to worry about whether the other person loved her or not because Murong Qiuyu was emotionless. They were still just friends, just like always.
This kind of relationship was truly what she dreamed of.
“An Yuxi sent it to me. It’s same-day pay; I got 20,000 yuan.” Murong Qiuyu shook her phone.
“20,000?” Lin Xiaojue stared at the numbers on the screen.
‘You have a way to make money and didn’t bring me along?’
“Hey, are we even friends? Why didn’t you call me to earn it with you?” Lin Xiaojue cried out.
“Because you’re already married to Su Yaqing,” Murong Qiuyu said flatly.
“Uh…” Lin Xiaojue’s eyebrows twitched. “How did you…”
“I naturally know. After she declared war on everyone that day, Gu Xue told me the news of your marriage to Su Yaqing.”
Murong Qiuyu held the umbrella, speaking slowly.
“That’s also why, since you’ve become so wealthy, I had you come pick me up as my guardian.”
Murong Qiuyu analyzed the situation calmly.
Lin Xiaojue was puzzled. “Then how did you manage to register me as your guardian?”
“Because when the residual beasts attacked in the past, my family died in a remnant beast tide. I wasn’t a magical girl back then, but I became one immediately afterward. There are gaps in my official records. I simply exploited that loophole.”
Murong Qiuyu spoke very quickly, recounting these events without a hint of emotion, as if she were an outside observer.
“I see…” This was the first time Lin Xiaojue had heard Murong Qiuyu open up like this. She had never heard her mention it before.
Now that she understood, Lin Xiaojue felt a bit hollow inside.
“So, I had a clone specifically sneak into the population database to modify my files.”
Murong Qiuyu clenched her fist, a sharp glint flashing in her eyes.
Then, she turned to look at Lin Xiaojue. “Besides, if I called someone else, they wouldn’t be as reliable as you. You are our Captain. At the same time, I believe Jue will definitely help me.”
“You are the one who will bring everyone together; you won’t give up on anyone.”
A tiny smile appeared on Murong Qiuyu’s icy face. The corners of her mouth curled up slightly, like a burst of sunlight blooming in the winter rain.
Lin Xiaojue stared, slightly dazed. Murong Qiuyu looked beautiful when she smiled, but she rarely ever did.
