Plop.
Su Xinran landed gracefully.
Wang Ya, clutching her still-healing wound, found her mind swarmed with questions.
With such terrifying combat prowess, Su Xinran clearly couldn’t be human.
Even among humans with powers, Wang Ya had never heard of anyone who could instantly kill a Cyclops.
But… if she wasn’t human, then why did her scent feel so irresistibly enchanting…?
Could it be…
Could it be that I like her?
No no no no!
Wang Ya furiously shook her head.
Sure, in the apocalypse, lesbian relationships weren’t anything unusual, but even so, Wang Ya was completely stunned by her own thoughts.
I’m not that kind of person!
I’m a firm non-marriage type!
How could I possibly catch feelings for some brat I just met once!?
Even if… her body is soft and fragrant…
Even if… her slender legs in white stockings look so delicate I want to hold them in my hands and play with them…
Even if… her squishy face still lingers in my mind, like a caramel pudding—bouncy and tempting to take a bite of…
Still!
There’s absolutely no way I fell in love at first sight!
Back in the car, I just wanted to confirm her species, that’s all!
If some leftover human was infiltrating the demon kind, we’d be screwed—ahem!
Yes, that must be it!
“Eh… Officer Wang Ya, your face is super red. Are you sure you’re okay?”
Watching Wang Ya alternate between frowning in deep thought, smiling like a pervy creep, and fidgeting with her legs squeezed together like a shy girl next door, Su Xinran seriously suspected she was suffering from tetanus.
Su Xinran leaned in, placing her fair, jade-like hand gently on Wang Ya’s forehead.
“Hmm… It’s warm, but corpses aren’t supposed to have body temperature, right?”
Way too close…
Wang Ya’s eyes turned into spirals.
“Officer Wang Ya…? Hey! Officer Wang Ya!!”
Wang Ya swayed a few times, then lost her balance and collapsed forward—
falling straight into Su Xinran’s arms.
“Y-you okay?”
Startled, Su Xinran caught her out of instinct.
It was the first time in her fifteen years of single life that she had held the opposite sex in her arms.
Wait… no, same sex now…
Still, the shock left her completely frozen in place, like someone hit with a paralysis spell.
Woo-woo!
Two sharp sirens blared as a pair of police cars zoomed in from the intersection and screeched to a halt nearby.
“Hands on your head! Crouch down and don’t move!”
Two burly men in sunglasses jumped out, shouting orders.
“Calm down! This kid saved me!”
The two officers exchanged a glance, clearly seeing disbelief in each other’s eyes.
There was a dead Cyclops lying right over there.
No way someone like Wang Ya and this little girl could’ve taken it down together.
Wang Ya stood up from Su Xinran’s arms and straightened her slightly disheveled clothes.
“Um… Officer Wang Ya, if there’s nothing else, can I go now…?”
Su Xinran spoke in a small voice, trying to quietly sneak away.
“Stop right there!”
Wang Ya’s shout brought her to a halt.
“Get in the car. The cleanup squad will take care of things here. You’re coming back to the station with me!”
Wang Ya spoke rather aggressively, and Su Xinran, now dejected, followed behind her like a scolded child.
Even though with her three magical items, she could easily wipe out everyone present…in a world where humanity has already been annihilated, it’s still smarter to lay low.
Besides, these demon-folk didn’t seem that bad.
To be honest, she was kind of worried about Awei and Afu’s safety.
…
Inside the police car, Wang Ya’s wounds had fully healed.
Seeing Wang Ya beside her, resting her chin in her hand and staring into space, Su Xinran mustered her courage to ask:
“Are humans… really extinct?”
“Isn’t that common knowledge? …Oh, right. You were locked in that house for four years. My bad.”
To Wang Ya, the extinction of humankind was as commonplace as knowing that ice cream melts.
She crossed her legs and continued:
“Four years ago, on January 1st of the first year of the End Era, the sun turned blood-red. Around 50% of humanity mutated when exposed to this sunlight and became zombies—what we now call the ‘Corpse Race’.”
“After the Corpse Race emerged, most of us were able to suppress our bloodthirsty instincts.
In fact, in the early days, we still lived relatively peacefully with humans.
But after a few irrational zombies caused injuries, unethical self-media outlets began stoking the fires of racism.
That’s when everything changed…”
“Minor incidents got blown up into matters of national survival.
Conspiracy theories ran rampant.
Tensions escalated.
After several large-scale massacres rooted in ethnic hatred, it turned into an all-out war between humans and the corpse-kind.”
“The war dragged on for a year—almost entirely one-sided.
Even though the red sun summoned all kinds of fantasy creatures to join the corpse-kind, humans still had an overwhelming advantage.
They monopolized high-tech equipment.
We only had enhanced physical bodies.
And really, how could flesh compete with bullets?”
“Worse still, some humans awakened supernatural powers and became ‘Espers’.”
At this point, Su Xinran, who had been listening intently, frowned and interjected:
“That doesn’t make sense…”
“If humanity had such a clear advantage, how did they end up being wiped out by the monster races within just a few years?”
“Hold your horses—I was just getting to that,” Wang Ya said impatiently.
“The key to humanity’s downfall lies with the Espers themselves.”
“Espers?”
Su Xinran was surprised.
“Weren’t Espers supposed to be humanity’s saviors? How could they be the reason for its collapse?”
“Heh. Humanity rose because of the Espers—and fell because of them too.”
“I mentioned before that Espers were rare among humans, right?” Wang Ya said, idly toying with a pair of handcuffs.
“What’s worse, most Espers awakened from the lower classes.
Very few in power—governments, elites—had any.
The terrifying abilities of Espers gave them immense sway in battle, which made the ruling class both fear and rely on them.
Espers started ignoring laws entirely.
And when humans gain power without limits, their darkness spreads like a wild beast out of control.”
“Kidnapping women, forcing polygamy—that’s the mild stuff.
The worst ones committed massacres and widespread atrocities, and law enforcement didn’t dare say a word.
Eventually, the legal system collapsed, and nations fell.
Many of them even turned back the clock of civilization, declaring themselves warlords and emperors.”
“After that, it was just a mess of power struggles and civil wars. The monster factions hadn’t even intervened yet, and the human side had already torn itself apart.”
“By the third year, the human forces had finally unified—but by then, over 99% of the population was already gone…”
