After sidestepping another pouncing small spider, she saw the source of the commotion: Five people were sprinting up from the lower floor, wielding various weapons.
They were clearly startled to see Lu Dongnuan.
When they saw the group of hideous zombies beside her, they trembled even more, their faces turning pale.
“Holy crap, what the hell is that… the Blade Queen?!” Xiao Li raised his gun and fired two shots at Lu Dongnuan, “bang bang”.
The bullets were blocked by a monster codenamed Gecko, which raised its arm.
Only a few sparks flew off its scales.
Old Zhao reacted extremely quickly, firmly pinning down Xiao Li’s wrist as he tried to pull the trigger again.
The force was so great that the latter cried out in pain.
“Do you want to die!” he growled, his voice low but carrying an unquestionable severity.
His gaze was locked onto Lu Dongnuan, the veins on his temples bulging.
Cold sweat soaked his hair as the scene before him completely exceeded his understanding.
“Is it… is it a person or…” The middle-aged man, Lao Zhou, had a dry and trembling voice.
The hand holding his Fire Axe shook so violently that the blade hit the ground, issued a slight “click”.
Lin Sui looked at the group, swallowed hard, and spoke up, “Hello, may I ask, are you with The Company?”
“The Company?” Lu Dongnuan asked in confusion, “Is there still a company in this day and age? The Umbrella Corporation?”
“Yes, I am with The Company.”
To continue her shameless style, she chose to impersonate them.
Lin Sui did not look happy upon hearing this; instead, she intended to ask a question.
“You…”
At that moment, she glanced at the zombies beside Lu Dongnuan and immediately swallowed her question.
She realized that if this woman was not from The Company and she exposed her, it might lead to a proactive attack.
So, she changed her wording.
“Was that commotion earlier caused by you? That is great. Please cover our exit.”
Lu Dongnuan tilted her head and asked back, “Then, are you with The Company?”
Lin Sui froze, not reacting for a moment.
Fortunately, the old police officer interrupted them just in time.
“Forget about The Company or no company for now, that thing is coming up!”
Lu Dongnuan turned her gaze back to the old officer and asked, “What thing? Is there something down there?”
“Giant Spiders, a ton of massive Giant Spiders,” Xiao Li said, glancing at the restless zombies beside Lu Dongnuan.
“Are you going down to join the fight?”
Lu Dongnuan smiled and stepped aside.
“Please, head out first.” As she spoke, she suddenly remembered something.
“But do not go too far.”
Lu Dongnuan’s words “Please, head out first” were spoken lightly, with a hint of politeness that stunned Old Zhao and the others.
“True, the outside is full of Zombies…” the middle-aged man said.
“Go!” Old Zhao did not hesitate any longer.
He gave a low shout and led the way past where Lu Dongnuan had stepped aside, supporting Xiao Li.
Regardless of this girl’s origins, she was currently controlling those zombies and had not shown any direct hostility.
She was even willing to “make way,” which was the best possible outcome for now.
Lao Zhou and the two young men followed closely behind.
As they passed Lu Dongnuan and those silent zombies, they nearly held their breath, hugging the wall as they shuffled past.
They did not dare to make any eye contact.
The young mother stumbled as she carried her child.
Lin Sui gave her a hand, and the two of them were the last to follow.
Lu Dongnuan did not move.
She just stood to the side, her gaze calmly scanning their panicked backs before finally landing on the Specimen Box Lin Sui was holding tightly.
Her eyes flickered.
“Do not go too far,” she added.
Her voice was not loud, but it reached everyone’s ears clearly.
The group stumbled up the broken escalator and arrived at a relatively open circular corridor.
The Zombies seemed to have retreated.
This area had originally been a high-end menswear section.
It was currently in shambles, but there were noticeably fewer cobwebs.
Only a few scattered red dots of light flickered in the distant shadows, seemingly distracted by the more intense “battlefield” downstairs.
Having temporarily escaped the desperate situation of being attacked from two sides, everyone leaned against the relatively intact walls and breathed heavily.
Xiao Li sat on the ground, tore open the fabric on his shoulder to check his wound, and hissed in pain.
Old Zhao vigilantly observed the situation on the upper and lower floors, his ears straining to catch any movement from Lu Dongnuan’s direction downstairs.
Soon, new sounds came from below.
She did not intend to stay long.
The survivors upstairs, especially the female doctor holding the Specimen Box, made her a little curious.
Furthermore, the sudden mention of “The Company” made her feel that something was wrong.
With a slight thought, the zombies scattered around her obediently retreated into the shadows, leaving only those necessary for guard duty.
Stepping over the mess on the floor, she followed the route Old Zhao and the others had used to retreat, catching up at a leisurely pace.
On the circular corridor of the second floor, Old Zhao had just signaled everyone to be quiet when he heard steady footsteps coming from below.
They were clear and composed.
Everyone instantly tensed up, weapons pointed at the escalator entrance.
Lu Dongnuan’s figure appeared there.
The stains on her body seemed to have lessened, but that non-human aura—a mix of bloodiness and cold order—remained strong.
Her gaze swept over the nervous crowd, finally landing on Lin Sui.
“You said you are with The Company. What proof do you have?”
Lin Sui had not expected her to ask as soon as she came up.
Seeing that there were no zombies around her, Lin Sui grew a bit bolder.
“I am Lin Sui, an investigator for the Black Shield Company. I sent out a distress signal 2 days ago.”
As she spoke, she pulled out a device resembling a small cellphone.
Lu Dongnuan glanced at it, her heart filled with doubt.
‘Black Shield Company? Never heard of it.’
Seeing that Lu Dongnuan did not speak, Xiao Li aimed his gun at her again and asked, “Are you human or a ghost?”
Lu Dongnuan frowned.
It was not because the man was pointing a gun at her, but because she realized the Zombies had all disappeared.
A bad premonition surfaced.
“Rumble —”
The ground shook.
“Run — !”
Lu Dongnuan’s sharp shout exploded like thunder, arriving almost simultaneously with the floor’s vibration.
Her figure shot toward the other end of the circular corridor like an arrow from a bow, moving so fast she left only a blurred afterimage on their retinas.
However, her warning was a half-beat too slow.
Or rather, the attack erupting from beneath the floor was faster than an ordinary person’s reaction limit.
At the exact moment Lu Dongnuan started to move, a section of floor tiles nearest to the group and the escalator entrance exploded!
Concrete fragments, steel bars, and the slimy black mud from below scattered in every direction.
A hideous limb as thick as a bucket, covered in a dark bony carapace and lined with barbs at the joints, slammed through the floorboards like a siege hammer from hell.
It lunged upward, carrying a nauseating smell of earth and a deeper, sickly sweet scent of decay!
Its target was the middle-aged man, Lao Zhou, who was standing unsteadily near the breach due to the ground’s shaking!
“Lao Zhou!” Old Zhao’s eyes nearly burst from their sockets.
He reached out to grab him but only caught a piece of clothing.
“Ah — !” Lao Zhou only had time to let out a short cry of surprise before the massive, bone-like claw closed, clutching both him and the Fire Axe he had been gripping tightly.
