Bai Tang pulled the trigger of her Demon Hunter Revolver. It was an empty shot. All the bullets had already been used up while dealing with the Barrel Butcher.
But even without knowing that, Theresa showed no intention of dodging when Bai Tang pulled the trigger. She did not even blink.
Demon hunters did not fear death.
As demon hunters who lived off the bounties they earned from accepting hunter quests, every day they were either facing a crisis or on the way to facing one. It was common for them to be chatting and laughing in a tavern during White Day and then meet disaster and die after Long Night fell.
Perhaps she would lose her life during some demon-hunting operation. Theresa had already prepared herself for that. Dying at Bai Tang’s hands tonight, even if the process was a little different from what she had imagined…
But Theresa accepted it just as calmly.
Therefore, when Theresa heard that crisp click, she was stunned for quite a while.
“No bullets left?”
“Hmph!”
Bai Tang withdrew her Demon Hunter Revolver and lightly snorted. With one eye open and one eye closed, she said:
“Consider yourself lucky. I’ll reluctantly believe you this time.”
Thank goodness. The demon hunter lady was not really an enemy. Bai Tang could not help but feel relieved inside.
Theresa blinked. Only after the fact did she realize she had been toyed with by Bai Tang. She immediately bared her teeth and pounced straight at the girl.
“You little bastard! How dare you scare me like that!”
“Eeeh eeeh eeeh! We can talk! We can talk! Don’t pull my clothes! That was an accident just now. I’m actually not that kind of casual person!”
Bai Tang panicked and kept trying to pull at her clothes, which had already lost most of their fabric after being corroded by gastric acid.
“Do you still have any recovery potions left? My bones are broken.”
The demon hunter lady’s hands roamed all over the girl’s body, trying to search for any remaining recovery potions.
“Hey, you’re being way too rude!”
So she was just looking for medicine? No way. Later on, she would have to split half the bounty with her!
…
…
After dealing with the Barrel Butcher, Bai Tang naturally did not forget her original goal of rescuing the trapped human compatriot. She glanced at the sky outside the window. The battle had ended, and there was not much time left until White Day dawned.
In the end, the two of them found the human girl with European features they had seen earlier in the tavern’s back kitchen.
“What do we do now?”
Theresa inserted a straw and took small sips of the recovery potion. Her gaze fell on the blonde girl lying on the folding bed. For some unknown reason, the girl had fallen unconscious and showed no signs of waking.
“Let’s try to wake her up first.”
Bai Tang frowned. She used her tentacles to tear apart the small leather straps binding the girl’s body, then took out the last remaining Flesh Recovery Potion and Spiritual Power Recovery Potion she had on her and slowly poured them into the girl’s mouth.
She tried calling out to the human girl, but there was no response at all. If it were not for the faint rising and falling of her chest, she would have been no different from a corpse.
It was as if she had completely turned into a vegetable.
“By the way… those eyes on your tentacles, Bai Tang. Were they there from the beginning?”
Bai Tang was stunned for a moment. She subconsciously looked toward her tentacles and happened to meet the gazes of the densely packed eyeballs on them.
“What the hell! When did they become like this? So disgusting!”
In truth, Bai Tang had already noticed the change in her tentacles earlier. But their appearance was really too sanity-draining. Just looking at them made her scalp tingle, so her brain had automatically filtered and beautified them.
Now that Theresa had pointed it out so directly, even if she did not want to accept it, she had no choice but to face it.
Was it because she had absorbed too many mixed potions while inside the Barrel Butcher’s stomach, causing some unknown mutation in her flesh?
From just now, she had felt that as long as she wanted to, with a single thought she could simultaneously share the vision of the densely packed eyeballs on her tentacles. But it really was too bizarre. This was definitely not a trait a human should have!
“Actually, if you look at them for a long time, they’re not that hard to accept,” Theresa comforted her.
“I don’t need your comfort!”
Bai Tang gritted her teeth. Not wanting to see them anymore, she directly retracted all her tentacles back into her body and took a deep breath to calm herself down.
Well, what else can I do? I’ll just have to accept it.
She vigorously shook her head and refocused her attention on the unconscious human girl.
“She still hasn’t woken up. What do we do?”
“Judging from the looks of it, this is most likely not a coma caused by external injuries.”
Theresa analyzed as she walked half a circle around the folding bed. She noticed that in the direction the human girl was facing, she could clearly see everything happening inside the tavern through the kitchen entrance.
In other words, the battle between them and the Barrel Butcher had been witnessed by this human girl from beginning to end.
“I’m guessing her soul was scared out of her body.”
Theresa noticed Bai Tang’s confused frown and added:
“It’s exactly what it sounds like. She saw too many things beyond her understanding. Her sanity completely collapsed and shattered. She lost part of her soul, which is why she can’t wake up. This kind of situation is still quite common in weak creatures.”
Bai Tang furrowed her brows. She had a feeling she had heard something similar somewhere before, but there were some differences.
Was it similar to the concept of the “three souls and seven spirits” in Daoist views on life? Because one of the three souls was missing, she could not wake up.
But how could this situation be resolved?
The girl glanced at Theresa beside her and saw that the other girl was also shaking her head, indicating that she did not know what to do either.
“Meow~~”
Just as Bai Tang was feeling somewhat helpless, a cat’s meow suddenly interrupted her thoughts.
She saw a black cat half-crouching on a nearby windowsill, licking its paw and quietly watching them. Because its fur color almost blended with the night outside the window, they had not noticed its presence at all earlier.
“A cat?” Theresa said with interest. “The rumors say that cats can see many things ordinary people cannot. This kind of creature is quite rare in the hell world.”
Under the surprised gazes of the two girls, the black cat nimbly jumped onto the unconscious human girl’s body. Its fluffy head affectionately rubbed against the girl’s cheek.
“If we can find a way to stuff this black cat’s ‘soul’ into her body, maybe we can fill in the missing part,” Theresa suggested.
Bai Tang looked deeply at Theresa. It was a good thing they were in the hell world and not on Earth. Otherwise, it would be hard to say who would end up on the bounty list.
However, the intimacy this cat was showing… did not seem like that of an ordinary hell world creature.
Could it be that it had come from Earth together with the unconscious human girl?
Bai Tang pointed at the unconscious blonde girl.
“She’s your owner. You want us to help save her, right?”
“Meow~”
The black cat circled twice on the girl’s stomach and then stepped on the girl’s chest with its paw pads.
This was definitely a cat raised by an Earthling!
