“Baby~”
“Baby~”
“Baby, where are you~”
Su Shanshan’s voice was soft but melodious and lingering. She called out for her baby as she crossed through the flower beds and the square, heading straight this way.
Pei Xingyan glanced at Lin Xiaoyu beside him, who still didn’t know what was going on and was happily staring blankly at her cup. He was momentarily at a loss.
Although he didn’t feel like he was doing anything like playing both sides, the fact that he disappeared silently from one girl’s side and then came out eating something made by another girl’s own hands…
No matter how he thought about it, it seemed impossible to explain clearly.
Especially since the other party was someone as volatile as Su Shanshan. If she exploded the moment she saw Lin Xiaoyu, then any explanation would be useless.
Pei Xingyan felt he couldn’t just let this crisis happen.
But Su Shanshan was already very close. Even if he pulled Lin Xiaoyu and ran now, it would be too late—they were bound to bump into each other.
“Baby~”
“Baby, where did you go?”
Su Shanshan’s voice grew nearer.
Pei Xingyan frantically scanned around. Behind this pavilion was the forest—a lone place to hide.
He bit his teeth and steeled himself, leapt over the railing, and ran straight behind the thickest tree.
After all, Su Shanshan didn’t know Lin Xiaoyu. As long as he wasn’t present, even if the two girls faced each other, there would be no problem.
This move startled Lin Xiaoyu. She didn’t quite understand what was happening, but out of worry for Pei Xingyan, she stood up and followed him, attempting to climb over the railing too.
She wasn’t athletic, nor was she good at handling crises. Wearing a skirt and shoes unsuited for such broad movements, she stumbled as she climbed, completely losing her balance, her face hurtling straight toward the ground.
“Ah!——”
She screamed in panic, reflexively covering her face with her hands.
Lin Xiaoyu’s only thought: if she fell like this, would it disfigure her?
Before today, Lin Xiaoyu had never been a girl who cared about her appearance. She never wore any makeup; even when friends gathered and discussed expensive cosmetics, she just quietly listened. She always considered such things unnecessary in life.
But now was different. She feared leaving any scars on her face—it would surely be ugly…
She didn’t want to become ugly, and she definitely didn’t want him to see her looking pitiful.
Clutching her face desperately, she protected that one spot.
But the anticipated impact never came. Lin Xiaoyu felt herself being caught by someone.
She kept her hands over her eyes, but her mood completely shifted—from fear to shyness. She didn’t dare look up to see who was holding her because if she did, her entire body would sizzle like boiling water.
Even without looking, she knew who it was. Although they hadn’t known each other very long, she was already very accustomed to this feeling.
Being cared for by him.
As long as she was by his side, she felt a strange sense of peace. Just thinking of his face made the hardships and sufferings she once feared like raging floods seem insignificant.
A flutter of joy rose in Lin Xiaoyu’s heart, but more than that was a quiet delight. She began to thank fate and coincidence—if not for destiny’s gift, how could she have been held in his arms like a princess?
Pei Xingyan carried her in a princess carry, one arm wrapped around her swan-like neck, the other hand supporting the back of her knee, holding her fair, slender leg.
“Th-thank you…” she said shyly, then shyly tried to get up from his arms.
Actually, she didn’t want to move at all, but her upbringing told her that if she wasn’t modest enough, what if he thought she was a frivolous girl?
She didn’t want to be seen that way, nor did she want him to dislike her because of it. So no matter how reluctant she was, she couldn’t stay.
But Lin Xiaoyu just couldn’t get up. Pei Xingyan tightened his grip and began to move.
He started jogging, carrying her just like that, weaving through the forest. Her skirt swayed in the breeze, leaves brushing lightly against her face.
For a moment, Lin Xiaoyu’s mind went blank. She didn’t understand anything except the clear fact that she was in his arms, walking through the woods.
She had watched many idol dramas and used to mock the heroines’ pretentiousness during sentimental moments.
But now, she couldn’t even think such thoughts.
The branches on either side swayed gently, as if welcoming their arrival. The rustling of fallen leaves underfoot was more intoxicating than a wedding march.
Lin Xiaoyu lay there, lost in thought, drifting far away. She began to wonder what Pei Xingyan intended by this—should she agree immediately? Or act shy for a moment before agreeing? If she hesitated a bit, would that cause misunderstandings?
Or would it be better to say yes right away…
Just as she was thinking this, she felt Pei Xingyan stop.
He gently set her down. Lin Xiaoyu hadn’t opened her eyes yet when she felt his hand press her against a tree trunk.
What was he going to do?
Her heart began pounding uncontrollably.
Her long eyelashes fluttered, and then her beautiful eyes slowly opened. She saw the person she always thought of at night right in front of her, very close.
If she just stood on tiptoe and stretched her neck a little, she could kiss him—
A kiss?
Lin Xiaoyu felt like she might die of embarrassment. How could she think such a thing?
This was far too immodest!
She scolded herself silently but couldn’t help looking forward to it.
Her body was far more obedient than her heart. She placed her hands behind her back, lifted her toes slightly, and turned her neck to welcome him.
Pei Xingyan moved closer and closer, his breath brushing her face.
Lin Xiaoyu felt she might faint. She instinctively closed her eyes, leaving herself completely vulnerable, waiting for him.
The first kiss… was it just on the lips? Should she lightly extend her tongue?
She waited and waited, but the anticipated feeling never came.
Was he shy too?
Then perhaps she should take the initiative?
She couldn’t wait! Nor could she let such an opportunity slip away!
Summoning all her courage, Lin Xiaoyu decided to open her eyes and kiss him first!
She saw Pei Xingyan right before her, very close, his gaze flickering and avoiding meeting hers.
He must be shy too!
She told herself this, her heart soaring with joy. People don’t blush for no reason—if he was shy, it meant his feelings matched hers.
In an instant, an uncountable amount of courage surged from her heart.
She pressed her toes harder, her instep stretching forward so much that her pretty shoe creased. She leaned forward, getting closer and closer to the boy in front of her.
“Chu~”
In a very brief moment, she left a mark on his face. But she was too nervous and only kissed the side of his jaw.
Pei Xingyan’s face was full of surprise, staring at her dumbfounded.
But now, Lin Xiaoyu couldn’t bear his gaze. She laughed softly, lowered her head shyly, and then quickly ran away from his side.
“I’m leaving first. See you next time~” Her voice drifted behind her, fading away.
Here, only Pei Xingyan remained.
He touched his face, his pupils trembling as if struck by an earthquake.
