Contact lenses are a wonderful thing, divided into daily, monthly, and yearly disposables.
Lin Nan was different she was a Mingpao.
One throw, one life; one life, one throw.
In the end, the effect was invisibility anyway, so being a Mingpao didn’t really matter.
But Lin Nan was tired. Whether abandoned actively or passively, being discarded so many times in a row would inevitably wear anyone down.
Fortunately, this was her last life.
Lin Nan had been working as a waiter under Cheng Fenggui for three years.
Based on her experience from her previous eight lives, she should have met the Destined One on the day she came of age last month, but no matter how long she waited, the person never showed up.
Better to return then.
True to her word, Lin Nan approached the Boss and Boss Lady and bowed deeply to them.
The two immediately understood Lin Nan’s meaning. The Boss put away his usual carefree demeanor, pulling out his abacus and clicking away as he calculated the accounts.
The fiery Boss Lady couldn’t hold back a glistening tear from her eye. Gripping Lin Nan’s hand, her lips trembled for a long time, yet she couldn’t utter a single word.
“It’s not like we’ll never see each other again,” Lin Nan said gently, her eyes soft yet filled with strength, able to touch anyone who met her gaze. “Boss, try to scam fewer people in the future. Boss Lady, try to cut back a little. Work hard in the second half of your lives and maybe open a shop in Changjing City. Perhaps one day I’ll come back and see you again.”
The Boss Lady nodded silently. She took the luggage and travel funds from the Boss and slung them over Lin Nan’s shoulders.
“These past three years, we watched you grow from a little girl into a young lady. You have a good heart—gentle and kind. You’re much better than the two of us. If it weren’t for you, we might still be wandering somewhere, bitter and lost in our old ways.”
“We’ve made too many enemies to dare have children, but to us, you’ve been like our own.”
The Boss Lady’s voice grew more emotional. Unconsciously, tears slipped from her eyes.
Lin Nan still wore her gentle smile. She wiped away the Boss Lady’s tears, hoisted her luggage, and waved goodbye.
People had Fate Patterns, and Lin Nan’s would take full effect once she reached adulthood.
Anyone who stayed by her side, whether actively or passively, would abandon her this outcome was unavoidable.
The white-haired, blue-eyed girl was like someone cursed by immortals, never able to find peace throughout her life unless she completed her ninth life, seized her fortune, and reincarnated as a normal person.
Perhaps this was what they called the Curse of Solitude?
The girl grinned slightly and hummed an unknown folk song as she walked toward the mountains.
Having been a Monster for eight lives, Lin Nan was either born with Demon Power or utterly unable to cultivate, forced to watch enviously as those women manipulated clouds and mists, flew through the skies, and practiced their arts.
She opened her palm and stared at it, murmuring softly, “This life I’m a Half-Demon. I should be able to cultivate now.”
From what she’d heard from the tavern guests, the major sects in the Jianghu had recently been recruiting disciples.
Since that was the case, she might as well try her luck maybe she had a chance.
Boom—
Without warning, a torrential downpour fell, splashing against the earth and releasing the scent of mud and grass.
The girl bit her lip, her beautiful long hair soaked and plastered against the back of her head. She hunched over, clutching her luggage tightly, and yanked her foot free from the mud.
“I remember yesterday that Fate Fortune Teller said today would be sunny and good for travel.”
If that was true, then what was this? Bad luck?
Really, as soon as she turned eighteen, she could immediately feel the world’s hostility. Wasn’t she just a born unlucky?
This streak of bad luck would only end once she met that Fate Chosen.
The girl carefully picked her way along the muddy path.
Suddenly, she heard the rapid clatter of hooves behind her.
A dilapidated horse-drawn carriage thundered down the muddy road at top speed. The horses’ hooves were wrapped in a faint Blue Light that allowed them to tread lightly above the earth.
Lin Nan’s eyes flickered in surprise. She watched as a large hole was blasted through the carriage’s side, a Fire Arrow stuck by the window. Flames trailed behind the carriage like a dazzling comet.
The carriage never slowed.
As it swept past Lin Nan, she inexplicably glanced at the window.
Inside sat a smiling woman. She gently brushed back a strand of hair and casually shot Lin Nan a glance.
In an instant, her smile blossomed like a flower. Playfully, she stuck out her tongue at Lin Nan.
Lin Nan remained rooted in place, struggling to free her leg from the mud.
But this time, she managed to pull her right leg out with surprising ease.
Sensing something, she raised her head and stared at the rain-drenched sky, which suddenly tore open with a shaft of light.
If she wasn’t mistaken, this sudden downpour was about to end.
—Provided the carriage hadn’t gotten far.
“After her! Don’t let her get away!”
Before Lin Nan could think further, a commotion broke out on the road ahead.
She turned and saw five figures in gray-white robes charging forward.
Like the horses, their feet glowed faintly with Blue Light, but they were far slower than the carriage.
Lin Nan muttered to herself: Looks like they won’t catch up.
She raised her head. The rift in the sky had already closed, and the rain continued to pour.
The girl sighed.
She still had to slog through the mud.
The rain worsened, blurring Lin Nan’s vision even as her hands became raw from wiping water away. She ducked under a large tree, silently praying no thunder would strike—and that she wouldn’t be so unlucky as to be hit by lightning.
That was just her luck, she thought.
Suddenly, a dazzling blue-white flash of lightning streaked across the sky, followed seconds later by a booming thunderclap deep within the clouds.
It was chilly.
Lin Nan pulled a soaked Raincoat from her bundle and wrapped it around herself. Still, the cold crept inside.
Until…
A hand rested on her shoulder.
Lin Nan shivered violently and instinctively twisted, gathering strength to deliver a palm strike behind her.
The blow, not especially fierce, was effortlessly caught.
Amid the patter of rain, a playful voice spoke behind her: “Relax, I’m not some evil villain.”
Lin Nan lowered her eyes and softly asked, “What do you want?”
“I want to.”
“?”
Lin Nan twitched at the corner of her eye. At a time like this, she had no patience for such silly flirting.
Before she could ask further, the person released her shoulder. Taking half a step back, she giggled and said, “I just saw you on the road and felt a connection, so I wanted to meet you. I didn’t expect you to be this cute.”
Lin Nan waited a moment, then slowly turned around.
“You’ve been abandoned too?”
The question came with her turn. She raised her eyes and met the other’s face.
The summer rainstorm was like a wallet sometimes full, sometimes empty all happening in the blink of an eye.
The heavy clouds parted continuously, allowing a golden light to pierce through the canopy, filtering through leaves and casting a glow on the girl standing before her.
She smiled openly, that smile pure and bright, carrying a hint of fearless courage.
Lin Nan was taken aback. “You’re the one from the carriage just now…”
“Hehe, you really remembered me. Seems like,” the girl nodded and extended her right hand, “you’ve fallen in love with me at first sight, haven’t you?”
Lin Nan neither shook her hand nor answered.
She just looked up, watching as the golden light above grew stronger.
That Fate Fortune Teller wasn’t wrong today really would be a sunny day.
If the brief clearing before was coincidence, then what about now?
When the girl appeared, it was sunny; when she disappeared, it rained.
So…
This girl was her Fate Chosen in this life.
