“Please, don’t do this!”
Jiang Ling discreetly took several steps back, her gaze sweeping the surroundings until she spotted a rather large supermarket nearby. She reiterated firmly, “Stay right here and don’t move. I’ll be back in a moment.”
“Lingling-chan… slurp, hehehe…”
Xu Nuo’s eyes were glazed over as she pouted, twisting her body like a worm while holding the little kitten.
Kitten: nm
After a while, Jiang Ling returned carrying a bag.
She poured some mineral water into the bottle cap, then tore a sausage stick into tiny pieces and placed both the water and the sausage bits on the ground with a hint of helplessness in her voice: “Although this isn’t really good for them, there’s no cat food sold around here, so this will have to do for now.”
Almost the moment Jiang Ling set the items down, the kitten stumbled down from Xu Nuo’s palm and dashed straight to the water source, sticking out its tongue and quickly lapping it up. Immediately after, it began gobbling the sausage bits.
Watching it eat so ravenously, Jiang Ling’s gaze softened gradually. Just as she was about to remind Xu Nuo a few things, she looked up to see her wearing a lovestruck expression, murmuring repeatedly:
“It’s Lingling-chan, the living angel lord… At a time like this, shouldn’t I kneel and beg you to take me as your retainer so I can live a shamelessly happy life from now on? Ah, I’m willing to dedicate my body and soul to you, please—”
“Shut up! Our novel doesn’t have this kind of fantasy setting!”
“And clean up your drool while you’re at it!”
Jiang Ling pushed away the pouty Xu Nuo who was leaning in, snapping, “If you have that much time, think about how to take care of this kitten instead.”
“Waaah, okay.”
Rejected, Xu Nuo looked sadly at the kitten, pushed up her glasses, and said seriously, “If all goes well, I’ll take it home and care for it properly.”
“And if it doesn’t?”
“That means I can’t even support myself right now, and I’m busy looking for a job, so taking care of a pet is out of the question.”
Seeing how confidently she answered, Jiang Ling had a bad feeling. “Then, may I ask, you weirdo green-haired glasses girl, which one is it?”
“Hehe.”
Xu Nuo shyly touched her face, clearly embarrassed. “Ugh, obviously the ‘doesn’t go well’ option~”
“Then why even bring it up!”
Faced with Jiang Ling’s helpless reproach, Xu Nuo lowered her head. “I’m really sorry. A gloomy woman like me—like the desiccant packet in a discarded food bag—is totally unworthy of raising such a cute little kitten, waaaah…”
Jiang Ling pressed her fingers to her throbbing temple.
Here we go again!
The meaningless chanting!
She carefully chose her words, trying to bring Xu Nuo’s drifting awareness back: “Anyway, let’s put it back to rest for now? After all, you can’t take it home; at most, you can only bring cat food when you have time.”
Xu Nuo suddenly snapped back, staring at the kitten, now licking itself clean after a full meal, biting her lip tightly. “But it’s still so young. Is it really okay for a lone kitten to be out there? Is there truly no other way?”
Hearing that, Jiang Ling nearly blurted out, “Then let me take care of it!”
But that was obviously unrealistic.
Although Jiang Ling liked the kitten and wanted to take it home, she lived in a dormitory and couldn’t just disregard her teammates’ opinions and bring it home on her own.
Still, looking at the kitten rolling and acting spoiled at her feet, she couldn’t bring herself to ignore it and found herself troubled.
If only someone else could take it in…
Jiang Ling immediately began sifting through her mind. However, her friends were so few she could count them on one hand. After going through the list, only Song Meng remained as a possibility.
After a brief hesitation, Jiang Ling tentatively sent Song Meng a message.
【I have a favor to ask. Are you free right now?】
Song Meng replied quickly.
【Where are you?】
Seeing a chance, Jiang Ling sent her location immediately.
About ten minutes later, Song Meng arrived and spotted Jiang Ling happily playing with the kitten… and the mysterious green-haired creature beside her staring at her with a lovestruck grin.
Song Meng approached, crouching down to look at the kitten. “Is this what you wanted to ask about?”
“Oh, you’re here.” Jiang Ling nodded eagerly. “Yeah, she and I can’t take care of this kitten, so I wanted to ask if you know anyone who could help.”
Halfway through, she realized she didn’t even know Xu Nuo’s name—only that she was a delusional, gloomy, crawling, self-loving weirdo with glasses—so she just brushed it off.
“Hm, yeah, I do.”
Song Meng thought for a moment, then gently reached out her hand toward the kitten.
After sniffing her scent, the kitten obediently crawled into Song Meng’s palm, arching its little head happily.
“Really?”
Jiang Ling’s eyes sparkled with joy. Just as she was about to say something, Song Meng glanced at her. “You do remember you owe me one, right?”
“Uh!”
Instantly, Jiang Ling’s neck shrank sheepishly.
Come to think of it, she really did rely on Song Meng a lot and had unknowingly piled up quite a few favors!
“Alright, I guess I can’t always take advantage of you. So this kitten can only…”
Listening to Jiang Ling’s increasingly quiet grumbling, Song Meng gently tapped her cheek.
“I never said I wouldn’t help. I happen to really like kittens, have enough time, and decent financial means. So, I wonder if you’re satisfied with me? Hmm?”
She pinched Jiang Ling’s cheek and shook it a little. Seeing the confused, dumbfounded look on Jiang Ling’s face, she couldn’t help but smile, then glanced down at the kitten snuggling in her arms.
Some things really do look alike…
Song Meng let go, holding the kitten as she stood. Then she noticed the ‘green-haired unknown creature’ staring at her warily, eyes suddenly flashing with a strange… hostility?
Song Meng laughed softly and casually asked, “Is she your friend?”
“Uh… not really.”
Jiang Ling pondered deeply, then shook her head. After all, they were just pure idol and fan.
“That’s right, we’re not friends!”
Xu Nuo heard this and felt no displeasure. Instead, she puffed out her chest proudly, speaking with fiery determination: “I am Lingling Angel Lord’s most loyal servant. I was born in this world solely to be toyed with by her. As soon as Lingling-chan commands, I’m willing to strip off immediately… ugh ugh ugh—”
Jiang Ling covered Xu Nuo’s mouth with a black-faced expression and looked at Song Meng, who was calmly staring at her. Cold sweat formed on her back as she stammered an explanation, “Um, she… has chuunibyou, please understand.”
“Ugh ugh ugh!”
Labeled as chuunibyou, Xu Nuo was now filled with excitement, her suspiciously writhing body and pupils hidden behind thick glasses faintly revealing heart shapes, her breathing growing rapid.
“Lingling-chan’s hands are so soft, ehehe…”
