“Who are you?”
Roman stood up, holding Cake in his arms, and looked at Milis warily.
But as he got a good look at her, his guarded expression turned into confusion.
If he remembered correctly, this was the person he’d seen after leaving his room that morning, someone who had come to discuss something with Luo Xiya.
Just like Luo Xiya earlier, Roman found himself staring at her silver hair for a long time.
Since coming to this world, it was the first time he’d seen someone with the same hair color as his, not a pale white, but a shining silver.
Milis had been staring straight at his face from the very beginning, her gaze unwavering and calm.
Even though most of the women he’d met in this world had similar temperaments, Roman couldn’t help feeling shy.
His face flushed slightly as he averted his eyes.
An awkward silence settled over the Back Garden, broken only by the meowing of the Cake in Roman’s arms, its little paws flailing about happily for reasons unknown.
“Why are you here?”
Surprisingly, it was Milis who spoke first.
Roman was puzzled, but after a moment he replied, “Countess allowed me to be here.”
He was still very polite in front of outsiders.
A fleeting look of confusion crossed Milis’s face, but then she seemed to understand.
Recalling how Roman had left Luo Xiya’s room that morning with rumpled clothes, she could easily guess his identity.
For some reason, the thought made her feel uncomfortable, even stirring a bit of subconscious disbelief.
“And who are you?”
Roman asked.
“Me?”
Milis collected herself and said, “I am Milis, the most devout follower of Goddess Fara.”
Translating the latter part of Milis’s words, and recalling a detail from his conversation with Elise that morning, Roman deduced that Milis was the current Saintess of the Holy Light Church.
“How did you get here?”
Roman asked curiously.
Milis glanced at the Cake in his arms.
“Did Cake bring you here?”
Roman lifted Cake a little, and it immediately began to meow again.
The gesture looked particularly playful in Milis’s eyes, and she couldn’t help but let a smile tug at her lips.
“More or less. Are you its master?”
Using Cake as an excuse, Milis slowly approached Roman, leaning in and asking softly.
“I suppose so.” Roman smiled.
Up close, Roman’s right eye was just a white flower, no eyeball, not even a sclera.
To most people, it would seem eerie and frightening.
Yet Milis found herself staring at it for a long time, thinking it was beautiful and mysterious.
Because of her own strange left eye, she’d been bullied and discriminated against before being discovered by the Church.
Now, looking at Roman, she felt an unusual sense of closeness.
“Was your eye like that from birth?”
Milis asked softly.
Roman was startled, and only after a few seconds did he realize she hadn’t been looking at his face, but at his right eye.
His cheeks turned even redder, this time from embarrassment rather than shyness.
After composing himself, he looked at Milis calmly and replied politely, “Yes.”
The next moment, Roman’s eyelid twitched as Milis suddenly stepped right up to him, stopping less than a meter away.
At this distance, he could clearly smell the faint fragrance on Milis.
A gentle breeze lifted the bangs on her forehead, revealing a golden cross-shaped mark right before Roman’s eyes.
A cross-shaped pupil, this was definitely not a trait any human could possess.
“No reaction?”
Milis reached out toward Roman, and he instinctively took a few steps back.
After what had happened last night, he was now wary of physical contact with others.
It made him feel uneasy, both in body and mind.
“Are you rejecting me?”
This time, Milis sounded surprised.
Since childhood, everyone, Saintess Highness included, had always indulged her unconditionally, even over trivial matters.
No one had ever dared to refuse her like this.
“We’ve only just met. If you have something to say, we can talk about it. There’s no need to get so close.”
Roman took a few more steps back, his tone serious.
At the same time, he couldn’t help feeling a bit anxious.
How had she gotten in here?
No servants could possibly approach this place. If she meant to…
Fortunately, Milis seemed to understand what he meant.
She stopped and said, “I’m just curious. Aside from your unusual eye, I can also sense the flow of your Magic Circuit.”
Having his greatest secret revealed so abruptly, Roman’s eyes widened in panic.
Milis continued matter-of-factly, “Catherine Mama’s tricks can’t fool me. So you don’t need to worry too much. No one but me will know your secret.”
To Roman, her words sounded vaguely threatening. Still, he realized from her tone that she didn’t know he was a High-tier Sacred Seal.
He mustered his courage and replied, “So what?”
“So?”
Milis shook her head.
“Don’t think I’m threatening you. I don’t want anything from you. I’m just satisfying my curiosity.”
“Sorry, but your behavior is a bit much for me. I can’t agree to it.”
Milis’s attire, her manner of speaking, and her bearing all made it easy for Roman, who was good at reading people, to recognize her noble status.
But here in Luo Xiya’s manor, he didn’t feel afraid or nervous.
At this, Milis finally showed a hint of danger.
She moved closer, and while Roman was distracted, she slipped behind him.
Her hands pressed down on his shoulders, and Roman froze.
In that instant, he realized that this Saintess wasn’t as virtuous as the rumors claimed; she actually had a rather dark side.
“If I’m not mistaken, you must be the Auction Item that caused such a stir not long ago, right?”
Milis tilted her head slightly, her voice calm.
Roman said nothing, but Milis could clearly sense his anger.
Cake jumped down from his arms and ran to Milis’s feet, bumping her with its head.
Roman opened his mouth, concern written all over his face.
Fortunately, Milis ignored Cake and continued, “A million, this Countess really is generous… Such a young and romantic person. You must be happy with her, right?”
“What are you trying to say?”
“You must have been moved at that time, right?”
Roman frowned and kept silent.
“Alright, let me put it another way.”
Milis shook her head and went on, “Compared to the other nobles present that day, how do you think Luo Xiya is different from them?”
Roman pressed his lips together and said nothing.
Milis continued, “Can’t put it into words?”
But to her surprise, Roman replied directly, “There’s nothing I can’t say. I can tell you right now.”
“If there’s ever something I truly don’t want to do, she will never force me. That’s enough.”
At this moment, Roman’s eyes were unusually clear, leaving Milis momentarily lost in thought.
