“I wonder how long I was unconscious this time?”
His eyes shifted to the clock on the wall.
“Damn! It’s already been five days?”
He shouted in surprise. This coma was clearly longer than the last one.
And during these five days without food or water, he didn’t feel thirsty or hungry at all. Instead, his body felt even stronger than before.
“Could it be that my digestive system mutated because of the virus?”
He stared blankly at his hands and body but saw no visible changes. Yet, there was no doubt his bodily functions were evolving.
“It’s surprisingly energy-efficient.”
“Could it be that from now on, I won’t need to eat and can survive just like a plant through photosynthesis?”
He laughed bitterly, unable to understand what exactly was happening inside his body.
He got up from the ground. Having been unconscious for so long, he wondered if Tang Wanyue was alright. At that moment, the door behind him creaked and rattled, and a bloodied figure pressed against the glass at the entrance.
“A z… zombie?”
“Why would a zombie come into this area?”
“No, that zombie is the bald middle-aged guy from across the hall!”
What shocked Tang Cheng even more was that the zombie leaning on the door was exactly that balding middle-aged man from next door. His face was distorted in a grimace, and his left arm, dripping with blood, was missing—clearly bitten off by zombies!
“What… what happened?”
Looking at the doorway, the figures wandering around were all zombies. Even the two prisoner zombies were among them, apparently having escaped from the elevator corridor. Meanwhile, the steakhouse where Tang Wanyue had been was wide open, with many zombies roaming inside.
“Tang Wanyue!”
Anxiety and worry surged in Tang Cheng’s heart. He had only been unconscious for five days, so why was the opposite side suddenly overrun with zombies? He urgently pushed open the shop door and rushed toward the steakhouse across the street.
“Tang Wanyue, Tang Wanyue…”
“You have to be alive!”
His gaze swept every corner of the restaurant, scrutinizing every zombie’s face, afraid Tang Wanyue might be one of them. If she was dead, he would never forgive himself.
He grabbed a stick from the floor. The two prisoners, Zhang Pi and Li Dan, who were tied up on the ground, had already been chewed into unrecognizable bloody messes. They had turned into zombies, sitting on the floor, listlessly struggling against their ropes.
The injured man with glasses lay nearby, crawling slowly on the floor. Unfortunately, he had already become a zombie too!
In the corner, a zombie kept banging its head against the wall. Recognizing the figure, it was the woman Liu Hong! Her neck, limbs, and entire body were covered in bite marks. Clearly, she was dead as well.
“Tang Wanyue…”
Tang Cheng’s eyes carefully scanned the surroundings, but he didn’t find Tang Wanyue anywhere in the main hall. The next place was the kitchen at the back.
The kitchen door was open. The jacket Tang Cheng had given Tang Wanyue was lying desolately at the threshold, stained with blood—an appalling sight.
Tang Cheng stood nervously at the door, terrified that the moment he stepped in, he’d see the familiar beautiful figure turned into a zombie.
At that moment, a zombie lowered its head and staggered out of the kitchen, making guttural noises. Tang Cheng quickly recognized it as the female veterinarian Wu Mei. If that was the case, then there was no hope of survival inside that small kitchen.
“Tang Wanyue, please don’t be in there…”
