Pei Xingyan’s phone was flooded with messages—all from Su Shanshan.
He had come back late last night from the banquet. The dormitory lights were already out, so he quickly went to bed and set his phone to silent to avoid being disturbed.
But this morning, he found so many messages that his phone was practically about to explode.
Su Shanshan sent everything—texts, voice messages, even videos and photos.
Pei Xingyan started reading from the beginning.
At first, she was fairly normal, simply sending greetings and expressing concern.
[Baby, shall we eat out tonight?]
[Baby, I bought you some milk tea. Come find me after class, okay?]
[Baby, I saw a dress online. Can I buy it for you?]
[Baby, I miss you so much~]
These messages seemed reasonable enough, but after waiting a long time without a reply, her mood suddenly shifted.
[Baby, are you busy? I’ll message you later then~]
[Baby, if you’re really busy, just tell me so I won’t bother you.]
[Can you please reply? Can you not ignore me…]
[Baby, did you lose your phone? I’ll come to your dorm to find you~]
Pei Xingyan suddenly shivered and hurriedly poked his head out from the bed curtain, asking rapidly, “Did anyone come looking for me last night?”
“Damn, you’re actually asking? I almost forgot!” Fan Jian immediately perked up. He jumped off his bed so hard the whole dorm shook. “Last night, our building almost exploded. There was a girl in a JK skirt squatting downstairs crying, ignoring anyone who asked her questions. The dorm manager almost called the cops.”
“Huh?” Pei Xingyan’s mouth dropped open. A girl in a JK skirt—that was Su Shanshan, wasn’t it? She’d been wearing one these past few days because of a JK schoolgirl photoshoot.
He quickly asked, “Then what happened?”
“Then?” Fan Jian patted his chest with heroic pride. “I went over and found out it was your girlfriend. She kept shouting your name. It was obvious you did something terrible to her. So I asked if she was looking for you.”
“Mm-hmm.” Pei Xingyan nodded.
“But she ignored me and even stepped back like I was a bad guy! Damn, she treated me like the villain!” Fan Jian thumped his chest in frustration, gritting his teeth. “But I didn’t care about that. I just told her you’d been working these days, sometimes busy at night, and might not come back. I told her it’s better if she goes back first.”
“And then?”
“And then she left,” Fan Jian shrugged. “How about that, bro? I’m loyal, right?”
“Loyal, loyal. Next time, I’ll treat you to barbecue buffet.”
“No! Just teach me how you pick up girls. I’ll treat you then.” Fan Jian was desperate. “I really don’t get it. How do you switch girlfriends so fast? And what about that girl Tang something, who kept coming to our department to look for you a few months ago? You kicked her away too, right?”
Pei Xingyan thought to himself that the Tang girl was now his business partner; kicking her out would ruin their deal.
But since he couldn’t openly talk about those matters, he changed the subject. “Want a girlfriend? Then you have to adjust your mindset first. Haste makes waste. When you stop rushing to find one, maybe love will come to you.”
“What do you mean?” Fan Jian looked confused.
“Figure it out yourself.” Pei Xingyan pulled the curtain back over and sank into darkness again.
Ignoring the questions outside, he continued reading Su Shanshan’s messages.
[Baby, someone told me you’re working late at night and busy. Is that why you don’t reply?]
[Can you stop working then? If you need money for anything, just ask me, okay?]
[I really miss you, haven’t seen you for almost ten hours~]
[Can you reply to me?]
[Can you reply?]
[Can you reply?]
[Are you not going to reply?]
[Baby, I’m going to sleep now. Can you send me a good night message? Otherwise, I’ll have nightmares~]
[Baby, I’m sleepy…]
She kept talking to herself like this, which was still somewhat normal. After saying she was sleepy, she stopped messaging for a long time—maybe she really fell asleep.
But in the middle of the night, she suddenly started messaging again.
[Why don’t you reply to me?]
Her tone turned cold all of a sudden, nothing like the sweet girl who called him “baby.”
The messages switched to voice, and there was an echo—definitely not in a dorm room.
“Why won’t you reply? Are you annoyed by me?”
“Have you lost interest in me???”
“If I find out you’re cheating on me, I’ll stab that bitch to death first, then you, then myself.”
Her voice was unusually calm but carried a strong threat.
This wasn’t something the usual Su Shanshan would say, nor did it resemble the apologetic girl he remembered from before.
Pei Xingyan’s hairs stood on end.
But the messages weren’t over. Su Shanshan sent photos next.
She wore the same clothes from earlier in the day, pure and beautiful, but hidden in the night, only a desk lamp lit the scene. The surroundings and her face were hard to make out, giving off a slightly eerie vibe.
“Baby, can I come find you now?”
“If I find you with another woman, I’ll cry~”
She smiled, but though she said she’d cry, the tone sounded more like, “I’m going to kill someone.”
Pei Xingyan quickly scrolled further to a video.
The lighting was stronger this time, making her face clearer. Though the location was still unclear, her expression was visible.
Su Shanshan stared at the phone, looking unlike herself—worn out, with a haunted tone. “Ba-ba… I’ll come find you. Don’t let me find out you’re cheating, okay?”
In just that short video, Pei Xingyan had a bad feeling. This wasn’t the same girl who always sweetly called him “baby” and sneakily wanted hugs.
Her demeanor, tone, and attitude toward him were completely different. If this was an act, Su Shanshan should be a teacher at the Beijing Film Academy or the Shanghai Theatre Academy.
He kept scrolling, but there was nothing else.
Still, his heart couldn’t stop pounding. This was not a good sign.
After thinking for a while, Pei Xingyan decided to send a message to test the waters.
[Sorry, I was busy until midnight yesterday and too tired to reply.]
[Really sorry. How about I treat you to lunch tomorrow?]
He pressed send, his heartbeat rising like he was sitting in a rocket ready to launch.
Almost immediately, Su Shanshan replied.
She said: [Okay, baby~]
[I love you (づ ̄3 ̄)づ╭~]
All the heaviness was gone…
