Eve’s sudden intervention caught Seraphina slightly off guard.
But on second thought, it meant Eve had accepted their partnership by default.
The most important thing right now was to catch up to Lin Shu and ensure her safety. She had to prevent the lurking Holy Race from getting their hands on that key or the girl herself.
“Then I’ll leave it to you, Miss Eve.”
Seraphina closed her parasol and quickly turned to run out of the ballroom.
The moment she pushed open the doors, she heard the sound of intense fighting behind her.
But she had no time to worry about that.
There was a long corridor between the ballroom and the entrance, and a strange silhouette caught Seraphina’s eye.
It was a figure draped in a cloak, wearing a hood that obscured most of their features.
The person was also walking toward the palace entrance, their footsteps somewhat hurried.
‘Something’s not right. The demons are all in the ballroom, so why is this person leaving alone early? Is it a coincidence?’
Seraphina quickened her pace, closing in on the figure.
This person’s aura… it felt wrong!
“Please, wait a moment,” Seraphina called out, attempting to stop them.
The cloaked figure paused for a heartbeat before immediately bolting forward.
‘There’s definitely something suspicious going on!’
With a flick of her parasol, countless blood-red bats surged toward the retreating figure.
The target quickly spun to the side while flinging their cloak open, and a dense volley of feathers shot out from within.
*Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!*
White feathers grazed past Seraphina.
They were the same white feathers that had attacked Eve at the entrance earlier. This person was definitely from the Holy Race!
Seeing the cloaked figure turn to sprint away again, Seraphina quickly activated her Domain skill.
Thick vines burst through the walls, Piercing the cloaked figure’s body and hoisting them into the air.
The toxin in the vines took effect rapidly. The figure’s struggling grew sluggish, and their body became stiff.
Seraphina approached step by step. “What are you chasing? Are you going after Lin Shu?”
“Vile Vampire…” the person spoke. It was a low, female voice. “Let go of me.”
Seeing that she was already paralyzed, Seraphina retracted the vines.
The cloaked woman slumped to the ground like a puppet with its strings cut, her limp limbs unable to support her weight.
“You saw that key, which is why you chased after her, right?” Seraphina’s voice was icy, the smile gone from her face. “What exactly are you people looking for?”
Lying on the ground, the cloaked woman used every ounce of her strength to extend a trembling index finger.
“That… is the Bishop’s…”
Her words were intermittent, yet her finger struggled to move.
Seraphina noticed she was drawing a half-formed symbol on the floor.
‘Is she trying to teleport? Or send a message?’
Seraphina’s heart tightened. ‘No, I can’t let Lin Shu’s whereabouts be exposed. Just in case…’
A murderous glint flared in her red eyes as she swung her parasol with lethal precision.
“Gack… She is… the God’s beloved…”
The cloaked woman’s voice trailed off, her unfinished words catching in her throat.
Her body dissolved into countless white feathers, scattering through the corridor before vanishing entirely.
“Phew…” Seraphina lowered her parasol, breathing slowly to calm herself.
‘God’s beloved? What does that mean?’
Did Lin Shu have some connection to the God of the Holy Race?
The only sound in the corridor was the distant fighting from the hall; no one had witnessed her actions.
The woman had mentioned the Holy Race. She must have recognized the key and chased after Lin Shu the moment it was exposed.
Judging by the woman’s final words, Lin Shu and the key were incredibly important to them.
Seraphina’s gaze darkened. Fortunately, she hadn’t been able to send the message.
No one was going to take Lin Shu away from her.
Just then, a flickering red light outside the window caught Seraphina’s eye.
It was a blood shadow bat; the informant’s message had returned.
Seraphina reached out the window. The blood shadow bat landed on her hand and transformed into a slip of paper.
As she unfolded the note and saw the contents, her breath hitched instantly.
It wasn’t the informant’s handwriting. Instead, it was a string of gold-foiled script.
The unfamiliar symbols flashed, transforming into a few words:
**[Your person is in our hands.]**
**[Who are you?]**
*Thump, thump…*
Seraphina could clearly hear the blood pounding in her temples. A chill rose from the soles of her feet.
The informant had been captured. Not only had the Holy Race intercepted the message, but they had also sent back a query as if it were a provocation.
“Master?”
Lin Shu’s voice drifted from the other side of the corridor.
She appeared at the far end of the hallway, walking toward Seraphina.
Seraphina snapped back to reality, instinctively crumpling the paper and crushing it in her palm.
“I stood at the entrance for a while and sensed you using a skill. I got worried, so I came back to check,” Lin Shu said. “Did something happen?”
Seraphina grabbed her arm. “Little darling, we’re going to the carriage right now.”
A powerful sense of unease gripped Seraphina’s heart.
She was terrified that Lin Shu would be discovered by other members of the Holy Race. They had to return to a place that belonged to them immediately.
—
Meanwhile, the battle in the ballroom was still raging.
*Boom!!*
Roars and the clashing of blades echoed continuously within the hall.
The demons were all trying to stay close to the walls, wanting to enjoy the spectacle while worrying that the two would catch them in the crossfire.
Leah swung her scythe, attempting to close the distance between her and Eve.
Eve retreated in her wheelchair while pulling on her silk threads to command Ella to attack with her sword, maintaining a constant distance from Leah.
‘Damn it, where did this wheelchair woman come from?’
Leah gritted her teeth and raised her scythe with gathered strength. “Who are you? Why are you helping Seraphina?! Are you two in cahoots?”
“Yes. Partners,” Eve replied curtly.
As the blade swung down, Eve jerked her wheelchair to the side, narrowly evading the edge.
Eve furrowed her brows, her expression exceptionally serious as she spoke word by word, “You steal… Lin Shu… Bad person.”
Leah’s face twisted as if she had swallowed something foul. “I’m stealing? Get your facts straight! Lin Shu was my familiar to begin with. Seraphina is the one who stole her! Seraphina is the bad person!”
“Liar.”
“Huh?” Leah was about to explode with rage. She shot back, “What gives you the right to say that?!”
“Long ago… Seraphina… Lin Shu… together,” Eve said with total certainty.
“What did you say?!” Leah’s movements faltered.
Eve seized the opening. Ella’s sword grazed Leah’s left shoulder, leaving a wound.
“Ugh!” Leah let out a muffled groan, enduring the pain in her shoulder.
This wheelchair woman was strong, but she was more concerned about what the girl had said.
“Long ago? But Lin Shu was clearly summoned by me three years ago. Are you sure the person you saw was Lin Shu? When? Where?”
The barrage of questions made Eve hesitate. she murmured softly, “Mmm… look… very similar…”
“On the battlefield…?”
But soon, Eve shook her head, only certain of the matter at hand. “Anyway… you are the bad person!”
“I’m done fighting you! You little stutterer!” Leah clutched her left shoulder and prepared to retreat.
She wanted to catch up quickly and confront Seraphina to get the truth.
Was the human woman who was with Seraphina years ago just someone who looked similar?
‘Could it be that wasn’t Lin Shu?’
“Eve is… not… a stutterer!” Eve’s face flushed red as she blocked Leah’s path.
