‘Don’t give me such a terrifying game just because I can rewind time… (Volt)’
Previously, after experiencing Camilla’s matter, Nuo Ai’er knew that new players under Weiran would be targeted.
Could it be that because Nuo Ai’er successfully cleared the Xiao Hong Mao instance, and with a perfect ending, and now drove away Camilla, and also found the two Demon Kings to protect her, the game started arranging harder instances for her…
They couldn’t possibly know that Nuo Ai’er could rewind, right…
The more she thought, the more terrifying it became.
Before Nuo Ai’er could react, the system started adding more.
[Adding level details…]
[Good Ending Condition: Survive in the room for seven days and find the truth.]
[Normal Ending Condition: Successfully escape the house.]
[Perfect Ending Condition: ??? (Please explore on your own)]
‘? What does that mean?’
‘It’s not like last time when I had to find the real Xiao Hong Mao; this time I have to find some real sister too, right?’
‘Using the same trick twice is boring (annoyed)’
Nuo Ai’er bit her lips and let out a breath.
No matter how she looked at it, this perfect ending was probably the kind of hidden condition that required her to risk her life to trial and error.
But for now, she didn’t care about the perfect ending; what she cared about more was how to survive these seven days.
Since it was a rule-based horror story, it definitely wouldn’t let her lie comfortably at home for seven days.
Sure enough, after finishing the ending conditions, rows of blood-red fonts appeared on Nuo Ai’er’s retina.
They were seven survival rules:
[1. The clock in the living room is accurate. Meimei will come home at exactly 20:00 every day. Until then, no matter what kind of knocking or lock-picking sounds you hear, do not open the door, and do not make any sound to reveal that someone is home.]
[2. Do not open the refrigerator, and do not open the trash bags in the bathroom.]
[3. Meimei likes you very much. After she comes home, play with her nicely. Never make her unhappy.]
[4. When Meimei is not home, if you hear footsteps in the living room, immediately hide in the bedroom closet! Do not make a sound!]
[5. No matter day or night, never leave this house!]
[6. Meimei is a good girl. Please trust Meimei. Do not doubt Meimei.]
“Uh… this is really kind of terrifying when you think about it (-; )”
After reading these six rules, Nuo Ai’er found them a bit eerie, but she could barely accept them.
After all, rule-based horror stories were played like this. As long as she followed the rules honestly, she shouldn’t die, right?
“Hmm… Huh?!”
However, when Nuo Ai’er’s gaze swept to the last rule, the seventh one, the little girl’s eyes widened instantly, panicking.
[7. One of the above rules is false.]
‘F-false?’
This white-haired loli began cursing the ancestors of the person who arranged this level for her.
These few short words were actually the most terrifying of all the rules.
If Nuo Ai’er believed the false rule, or didn’t believe the true rule, her fate would definitely be very bad.
Although it didn’t explicitly say what would happen if rules were broken, but how to put it…
‘It’s this kind of unknown that’s terrifying… T_T’
“What the heck… which rule is the lie?!”
‘Is it leaving this house?’
The normal ending condition says escaping the house can achieve it, which contradicts the rule.
But what if escaping has prerequisites…
And many other rules…
“Ugh…”
Nuo Ai’er shook her head forcefully, forcing herself to calm down.
Panicking at a time like this was meaningless.
Anyway, she still had the safety net of time rewind, even though she was afraid to trial and error, it still calmed her down a bit.
“Now… I need to observe the surroundings first.”
Then, Nuo Ai’er began to tour this new “home.”
It was a typical modern house, with a very ordinary layout.
The living room, bathroom, and bedroom all looked normal, except for a lingering smell of mold and some indescribable fishy stench in the air.
“Mm…”
Nuo Ai’er carefully walked to the bathroom door and peeked inside. Just one look and her hair stood on end.
Next to the toilet bowl, there were piles upon piles of black trash bags.
Those bags were bulging, as if filled with something disgusting.
Nuo Ai’er didn’t dare to look any longer; she quickly backed out and closed the bathroom door.
“Oh, the time.”
She looked up at the clock on the living room wall.
It was exactly 18:00 now.
There were still two hours until “Meimei’s return” as stated in the rules.
‘For now, I’ll trust that this rule is real…’
Nuo Ai’er had to find a way to survive these two hours first.
“?! “
At that moment, the silent living room suddenly rang with “tap, tap, tap…” footsteps.
Those footsteps were heavy and dragging, not like normal walking sounds, but like someone dragging their body forward.
‘Bad news!’
Nuo Ai’er froze, and rule four flashed through her mind:
When Meimei is not home and you hear footsteps in the living room, hide in the bedroom closet and don’t make a sound.
Without any hesitation, she rushed into the bedroom at top speed.
The bedroom had a single bed and an old wooden closet.
Nuo Ai’er opened the closet door, crawled inside, and gently closed the door.
The closet was pitch black.
Nuo Ai’er curled up in a corner, covering her mouth tightly with both hands, reducing even her breathing to a minimum.
“Tap… Tap… Tap…”
The footsteps didn’t stay in the living room. After lingering for a while, they paused, then came toward the bedroom.
The footsteps grew closer and finally stopped outside the bedroom door.
Nuo Ai’er’s heart was beating so fast it felt like it would jump out of her throat.
‘Oh, the rule about hiding in the bedroom might also be fake…’
Nuo Ai’er squeezed her eyes shut, praying desperately in her heart.
‘Please, this rule has to be real! It has to be real!’
The next second, the bedroom door handle suddenly turned.
“Creak—”
The door was pushed open.
The dragging footsteps entered the bedroom, walked around a bit.
Then paused again, before speeding up and heading straight toward the closet.
They came right up to Nuo Ai’er.
Nuo Ai’er trembled in fear, tears welling up in her eyes.
…The footsteps stopped in front of the closet.
Nuo Ai’er held her breath, not daring to move an inch.
One second, two seconds, three seconds…
The footsteps never appeared again; they disappeared.
‘Is it safe?’
She waited another ten or so seconds.
The footsteps did not reappear.
Could it be… they finally left?
Nuo Ai’er breathed a sigh of relief in her heart, her tense nerves relaxing a little.
But just then—
The closet door was slowly pulled open from the outside.
‘Completely wrong! The footsteps didn’t leave; they were about to open the closet door…’
