By the time they got off the subway, it was already dusk.
It was only 4:30 PM, but unfortunately it was winter, and the sun in the sky couldn’t hold on any longer, ready to clock out early.
But unfortunately, even if the sun clocked out, it wasn’t yet time for corporate slaves and students to go home.
These two groups had a pretty high overlap: broke, single, and with no bright, clear future.
And to top it off, there was always homework that couldn’t be finished no matter how hard you grinded.
Gou Yu stepped out of the subway car first, then turned around and performed a rather gentlemanly bow, which perfectly matched the slight stains on his originally pure white suit.
Zhu Niao was behind him, watching Gou Yu bend over with his hand extended.
She put her hand in his without hesitation, then, as he looked up, used her free hand to raise a middle finger at him.
That was their little world.
It had nothing to do with the noise around them, nothing to do with the people nearby pulling out phones faster than drawing a gun, nothing to do with anyone else’s opinions.
It was just a small world for the two of them. She liked Gou Yu, and Gou Yu liked her, so in this world, birds sang and flowers bloomed, and warm sunlight filled everything.
Zhu Niao suddenly thought of those strange musicals she never understood.
But she felt that if they were in one of those musicals, she and Gou Yu would be dancing to the music right now, stepping out notes on the subway station floor.
Too bad she didn’t know music or dance.
She just followed Gou Yu’s steps, occasionally bending her leg and kicking him square in the butt.
That was her getting the upper hand, because her dress was a brilliant white, and Gou Yu’s white suit was already dirty anyway.
One more kick wouldn’t hurt, but if he kicked her white pants, they’d be a pain to wash.
But then again, maybe she wasn’t getting the upper hand, because Gou Yu’s main kink was below the waist—maybe after two kicks, he’d be hoping for a third.
“If you keep this up, I’m going to get back at you,” Gou Yu said, pointing a finger at Zhu Niao.
“And how exactly are you going to get back at me?”
On the escalator heading up, people passed by in scattered streams.
Occasionally one or two who didn’t follow the rule of standing on the right hurried past, bags in hand.
Their footsteps stopped at the exit of the station.
Zhu Niao was on the outside, and Gou Yu held the railing with one hand.
He turned slightly, shifting from holding the railing to leaning against it.
The setting sun outside, its warm yellow light tinged with a hint of red, shone on the glass of the building across the street and reflected back.
It was as if a natural carpet had been laid over the subway station steps, making every step feel like it was touching the residual warmth of the sunset.
It also fell on the backs and fronts of passersby.
People were always in a hurry, and it was rare to see anyone like Zhu Niao and Gou Yu pausing on the steps.
A rosy glow climbed up the girl’s cheek, adding a special brilliance to her eyes.
It was a little like an impossible burning cloud drifting through a silent galaxy.
With both hands behind her back at her waist, she tilted her head, rose on her tiptoes, and leaned her upper body toward Gou Yu.
Gou Yu could see the burning cloud in her eyes, as if real flames were blazing, and at the very center of those flames was his reflection.
He was finally standing right in the center.
“That cocky, huh? Don’t get scared and run away,” Gou Yu said as he reached out and wrapped his arm around Zhu Niao’s waist, as if trying to press everything in front of him into his own body.
Their chests pressed together—maybe Zhu Niao’s tiptoes helped with that.
The girl’s cheeks were flushed, and Gou Yu couldn’t tell if it was the reflected sunset or not.
“Me? Scared of you?” Zhu Niao’s eyes instinctively darted away, but she forced herself to look at Gou Yu.
She was telling Gou Yu that she was ready.
So Gou Yu kissed her.
This kiss was their third, and it lasted longer than the first two combined.
It was like a flood breaking through a pass. Zhu Niao instinctively tried to block the unusually agile flood that invaded her, but she couldn’t control it.
And then she was easily captured.
Neither of them cared about the stares of everyone around them, since they weren’t bothering anyone anyway.
It was as if they had carved out a separate little world—this was in Zhu Niao’s world.
Neither of them had expected that they would become the kind of lovey-dovey couple they both despised the most.
After a while, Gou Yu pulled back.
The girl gasped for breath, her eyes hazy but fixed on Gou Yu—like she was casting amorous glances, or like her eyes were threads of silk.
She was several times more tempting than usual.
Gou Yu swallowed.
For the first time, he felt flustered in his intimate moments with Zhu Niao.
If she kept acting like this little vixen, he’d probably be thinking about her even while delivering food.
She was messing with his head.
He could already feel his own impulse, his heart pounding so hard it felt like it was trying to leap out of his throat.
Then he watched as Zhu Niao, still looking up at him, gently pressed her cheek against his chest, looking delicate and clingy.
“Your heart is beating so fast.”
Coming back to her senses from the deep kiss, Zhu Niao leaned against his chest and said in an ethereal voice.
Gou Yu knew full well his heart was racing.
It seemed like he was the one about to flee in panic.
Actually, he had planned to stop joking around after they left the subway and just be sincere with each other.
But the current situation told him that if he didn’t say something stupid, they might never leave the station.
So he put on the stiffest sneer he’d ever mustered.
“I actually didn’t brush my teeth.” With that lame joke, he ran out of the subway station, like a routed soldier fleeing in disarray.
He even forgot to turn around and mock her, or flip her off—the crucial middle finger.
Zhu Niao was stunned for a moment, then lifted the sides of her long skirt slightly and jogged after him.
She chased him all the way to the bus stop, where Gou Yu had stopped to figure out which bus they should take.
She slowed down, stepping lightly like she was dancing, her toes touching the ground as she came up behind him.
Gou Yu still had his back to her.
She reached out and poked his back.
He didn’t turn around.
So she hugged him from behind, wrapping her arms around his waist, rubbing against him gently, greedily breathing in his scent.
But the bus stop sign had a mirror-like reflection, and it showed Gou Yu’s panicked eyes, his fists clenching and unclenching against the sign.
After a moment, she let go of her embrace and sat down on an empty waiting bench, resting her chin on both hands, her eyes full of her boy.
