“Baby—”
Su Shanshan hurried after him, moving carefully so as not to make a sound, not calling out loudly, nor doing anything rash. She simply liked someone wholeheartedly, but she wasn’t foolish enough to be reckless.
She stepped out past the doorway and saw Pei Xingyan not far ahead, his face brightening with a smile, and she quickly ran toward him.
But the woman whose face looked as sour as if someone had stolen her money blocked her way.
“Who are you?” the woman spoke bluntly, placing Pei Xingyan behind her and cutting off Su Shanshan’s path to her baby.
Su Shanshan didn’t want to bother with this sudden obstacle and tried to turn around to go around her, but was blocked from another direction as well.
Only then did she realize the woman in front of her was here to cause trouble.
Su Shanshan raised her head and, in a counterattack, asked, “And who are you?”
“Teacher! This is our Teacher Shen!” Pei Xingyan whispered to her, his tone urgent yet cautious.
Su Shanshan’s eyes instantly cleared up. Although her instincts told her this woman was unpleasant, she didn’t want to cause trouble for Pei Xingyan.
She quickly bowed slightly and greeted in her sweetest tone, “Hello, Teacher~”
“Save it. I’m not your teacher,” Shen Zhishu replied without any warmth. She was so harsh that she didn’t even seem like a teacher. Her fingers tapped irritably on her own shoulder.
She glanced at Pei Xingyan, then shifted her gaze toward the stylishly dressed girl, clicking her tongue in clear displeasure.
Turning back to interrogate Pei Xingyan, she coldly asked, “What’s your relationship?”
Pei Xingyan, who had been silent for a long time, reluctantly perked up, shrugged, and prepared to brush it off.
But Su Shanshan beat him to it. She deeply bowed before Shen Zhishu and apologized, “Teacher, sorry, it was me pestering him to bring me to class. It’s not his fault.”
She was polite and took responsibility for her mistake.
Though she seemed a bit crazy in matters of the heart, she was still an excellent student otherwise. Excellent students must explain situations properly and not drag innocent people into their mistakes.
Still, Shen Zhishu was unmoved. She shook her head and repeated the earlier question, “I’m not asking you, nor why you’re here. I’m asking him—what’s his relationship with you?”
Su Shanshan looked at Pei Xingyan with a matter-of-fact expression. She stepped beside him, linked her arm through his, and hugged him possessively, as if showing off, “Of course we’re a couple, aren’t we? We look pretty compatible, right?”
“Really?” Shen Zhishu suddenly bared her teeth in a smile, then turned to Pei Xingyan and deliberately enunciated each word, “Re-a-lly? A-re… you… a… co-u-pl-e?”
Pei Xingyan felt the killing intent was about to solidify into a physical presence!
Why was she making that face over something like this?! Anyone who didn’t know might have thought he was caught cheating…
He was at a loss and didn’t know how to respond, so he turned away and smiled slyly at Su Shanshan, hoping she would get the hint and retract her words.
After all, no matter how you looked at it, Shen Zhishu was clearly not normal.
But obviously, Su Shanshan misunderstood him. She tightened her grip on his hand, holding on firmly, as if ready to face an enemy’s wrath alongside her lover.
Besides, this wasn’t a strict high school that punished early relationships. Even if it were, she wouldn’t be afraid!
She was determined to stand by her baby’s side!
Shen Zhishu took deep breaths and murmured quietly to herself—she was trying to calm herself, but her anger was far from quelled.
Pei Xingyan knew he had to do something. He quietly stepped back and positioned Su Shanshan in front of him as a shield. Then he mouthed words to Shen Zhishu:
【Don’t provoke her. She’s that girl!】
He trusted Shen Zhishu was smart enough to understand what he meant.
But Shen Zhishu deliberately ignored him, like she was sulking. Her gaze remained fixed on Su Shanshan, unblinking, unreadable.
Pei Xingyan coughed on purpose to attract her attention.
It didn’t work; Shen Zhishu didn’t look his way. Instead, Su Shanshan reacted.
She turned around, concerned, and poked Pei Xingyan’s waist, “Baby, are you feeling unwell?”
Pei Xingyan forced a smile and waved his hand to say he was fine.
Su Shanshan grew even more concerned, leaning in to examine him, trying to figure out why he was coughing.
This finally caught Shen Zhishu’s attention. She saw the two inching closer, her breath suddenly heavy, her eyes darkening.
She approached with high heels clicking sharply, the sound echoing down the empty corridor like the footsteps of death.
Pei Xingyan hurriedly raised a hand, pointing above Su Shanshan’s head, silently mouthing the words again.
This time it worked. Shen Zhishu stopped, her brows knit with doubt and disbelief.
Pei Xingyan repeated: 【It’s true! I’ll explain later!】
His pleading expression was more sincere than someone begging for their life. One hand was raised like a monk’s alms bowl, begging for mercy.
This earnest plea finally moved Shen Zhishu. She exhaled deeply and tapped Su Shanshan’s head twice heavily from a distance before turning and walking away.
Tap—
Tap—
Tap—
The sound of high heels faded until the intimidating woman finally disappeared from sight.
Pei Xingyan exhaled in relief. The pressure he felt just now was no joke—Shen Zhishu was definitely a hidden heavyweight.
Worse, though Pei Xingyan didn’t fully understand, this woman clearly had some past connection with him. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have reacted so strangely to the idea of him having a girlfriend, almost as bad as Ye Ziwei.
Su Shanshan still fussed over his throat, though it seemed more like an excuse to cuddle. She pressed her face against his shirt, breathing in deeply, even more infatuated than a lovestruck girl.
Pei Xingyan gently pulled her away and playfully knocked her on the head, giving the overenthusiastic girl a little lesson.
Su Shanshan stuck out her tongue and lowered her head to show remorse.
Yet she refused to let go of his hand and paid no mind to the woman who had vanished.
After all that, Su Shanshan didn’t want to trouble Pei Xingyan anymore. She leaned close to his ear, cooing for quite a while, then reluctantly watched him enter the classroom from the doorway.
She lingered for a long time before finally leaving, disappointed.
*****
Pei Xingyan wasn’t in the mood for class. Returning to his seat, he spent the remaining time chatting casually with Lin Xiaoyu.
The girl seemed to have new problems. She complained about everything and confided her troubles with Pei Xingyan.
But her spirit had clearly improved; perhaps escaping her troubles was only a matter of time.
Pei Xingyan finally felt a bit confident—this was the only bright spot for him recently.
Just then, an unfinished matter caught up with him: Shen Zhishu sent a message:
【Come to my office after class. I’m waiting for you.】
