Lu Yunze couldn’t understand why a girl’s mood could change so quickly, even faster than flipping a page in a book.
Thinking back to when he used to play with Luo Yao, she would also lose her temper at him for no reason either deliberately ignoring him or purposely going off to play with other boys.
Lu Yunze was always puzzled, but he never really tried too hard to get her forgiveness. Anyway, after a few days, Luo Yao would always stick to him again.
But this was the first time Lu Yunze had seen Jiang Sui lose her temper.
“Young Master, didn’t Miss once say you don’t understand a woman’s heart?”
“Ah, how did you know?”
Lu Yunze felt that whether he understood or not didn’t matter. But hearing such a delicate phrase as “a woman’s heart” coming from someone like Jiang Sui, who was always teasing him, felt extremely out of place.
“No wonder Miss keeps you on a free-range policy.”
“Am I your livestock or something?”
Luo Yao had grown up with him, spending day and night together, giving her an enormous advantage. That kind of advantage wasn’t something just any woman he’d just met could easily overturn.
Jiang Sui thought she had gained a huge upper hand, but as things stood, Luo Yao still held an important place in his heart.
I have to work even harder. I need to use my presence to erase Luo Yao’s years of influence, to completely turn Lu Yunze into a “pet” who only has eyes for me.
If that doesn’t work, I’ll just have to use more forceful methods. After all, this female body is meant for just that.
I’ll cultivate a weakness in Lu Yunze, forcibly separate him from Luo Yao, and as for feelings, those can be developed slowly later.
But…
Jiang Sui glanced at Lu Yunze, who was just a step away from her, and touched her own flat belly.
That was a trump card only to be used as a last resort.
After all, rolling in bed with a man, and even getting herself pregnant—just thinking about it made even Jiang Sui feel nauseous.
But knowing she still had a chance to win, Jiang Sui’s mood improved considerably. Her pace slowed, and she no longer left Lu Yunze behind at every step.
As they neared the Manor, Jiang Sui deliberately put some distance between herself and Lu Yunze, to avoid being seen by certain people and jeopardizing her plans.
Just as they stepped into the front yard, they saw Servants standing at the door. The only likely reason someone would be needed to guard the door was that a guest had arrived.
“Good afternoon, Young Master.” The two Servants greeted them proactively.
“Is someone visiting the house?” Lu Yunze asked.
“Yes, the guest is talking with Miss.”
“How many people?”
“Just one.”
Strange. Why would someone come to see Luo Yao alone at this hour?
Lu Yunze knew that girl’s temperament well. If she was meeting friends, it would either be a small group to go out together, or she’d invite a whole bunch home for a party.
If it was only one person, unless that person was very important, Luo Yao would never bring someone home so lightly.
Entering the Manor and arriving at the main hall, Lu Yunze quickly saw the two people sitting on the sofa. One was Luo Yao, dressed in pajamas with a coat thrown over, and the other was the recently arrived guest.
The guest was a middle-aged man, looking to be over thirty, his square face exuding an air of seriousness.
Lu Yunze recognized him. Just a week ago, they had spoken at the Police Station.
It was Police Chief Wang Xu.
“Ah, Brother Lu, you’re back.”
Luo Yao’s face immediately broke into a smile when she saw Lu Yunze, but the moment she noticed Jiang Sui by his side, the smile froze.
Luo Yao got up and walked over to Lu Yunze, reaching out to straighten his collar.
“Uh, should I go back to my room first? I shouldn’t disturb you, right?” Lu Yunze could feel the pressure coming from her, and even Jiang Sui pressed her lips together in silence.
“No need, you came back at just the right time.”
Luo Yao looked up, her smile unchanged, but to Lu Yunze, there was no warmth in it at all.
“Chief Wang just happens to be looking for you too.”
With that, she stepped aside, handing Lu Yunze over to the approaching Wang Xu.
“Hello, Mr. Lu. The last time we met was just a week ago.”
“Is there something you need from me?”
Wang Xu’s smile was much gentler, which put Lu Yunze at ease. He sat down with him. As for Jiang Sui, since Luo Yao had asked her to stay, she stood by on standby.
“Smoke?” Wang Xu took out a pack of cigarettes.
“No thanks, someone at home doesn’t like me smoking.” Lu Yunze waved his hand.
That someone was probably Luo Yao. Jiang Sui subconsciously glanced at the heiress sitting elegantly on the other side. She sat silently, her posture graceful.
“I’ll get straight to the point,” Wang Xu’s expression turned serious. “I’m here about the incident at the Police Station last week.”
“Didn’t the Execution Department of Arcane Arts already investigate the Manor?” Lu Yunze asked. “And Luo Yao also screened all the Servants here.”
“Recently, the Lan City Missing Person Case has been rampant. But after you dealt with that enemy at the Police Station, it was as if the other side vanished, not appearing for an entire week.”
“Isn’t that a good thing?”
“But just yesterday, the corpse of the Butler you killed disappeared from the Morgue.” As Wang Xu spoke, he leaned forward slightly.
“Huh?”
Lu Yunze’s eyes widened. Luo Yao and Jiang Sui, on the other hand, remained calm. The former had already heard about this from Wang Xu, while the latter kept thinking: What is that Black Cat doing, losing the corpse like that?
Wang Xu continued, “So I have reason to suspect they’re just lying low, waiting for things to blow over. They’ll be back soon, and maybe even more aggressive.”
The missing persons cases kept happening, but the gang behind them had always acted cautiously, never exposing themselves to the light. Why, this time, did they attack the Police Station so directly? It was reckless and rash, leaving a sense of something off.
Wang Xu voiced his suspicion directly: “So I believe there are deeper reasons behind last week’s Police Station Incident.”
As soon as he said this, Jiang Sui’s expression almost slipped, but she managed to keep it together. Good thing she’d been able to lie to her superiors face-to-face in her previous life without flinching.
Was this Chief always so sharp?
As soon as he finished, his gaze swept over everyone present. Lu Yunze and Luo Yao’s confusion wasn’t fake, so he didn’t linger.
But when he looked at Jiang Sui, his eyes paused for a brief moment before moving on.
Is he suspicious of me?
If her secret cooperation with the Black Cat was exposed, even if Jiang Sui could clear her name regarding the missing persons gang, her plans would be ruined. The Luo Family wouldn’t let a debtor like her go, but they also wouldn’t let her get close to Lu Yunze again.
But something felt off. Though their eye contact was brief, Jiang Sui sensed a strange emotion in his eyes, making her shiver.
“Chief Wang, are you suspecting someone among us?” Lu Yunze couldn’t help but ask.
“It’s just speculation.” Wang Xu forced a cheerful smile. “After all, there were only a few people involved, and even the Butler’s corpse is missing, so I had to come to you, didn’t I?”
As he spoke, Wang Xu turned to look at Jiang Sui, as if his last sentence was directed at her.
“I’ve already told you everything I know at the Police Station, Chief,” Jiang Sui replied calmly, “and the Young Master can vouch for me. He was with me the whole time at the Police Station.”
“But Miss, you were the first victim.” Wang Xu’s gaze stayed sharp. “I believe you’re innocent, but I’d still like to ask you to come with me. Don’t worry, as long as you cooperate, the officers won’t make things difficult for you.”
What a troublesome man. If talking wouldn’t work, then she’d just have to find a way to get rid of him.
A chilling flash of murderous intent flickered in Jiang Sui’s eyes.
Just as Wang Xu was about to get up and approach Jiang Sui, Lu Yunze suddenly spoke up, cutting him off:
“You can investigate, but going with you is out of the question.”
“Hmm?”
Lu Yunze’s sudden firmness surprised Wang Xu.
“I trust Jiang Sui, and I trust everyone in this Manor. There won’t be another undercover like that old Butler again.”
Lu Yunze sat up straight, eyes sharp.
“If you want to investigate, you can come to me. I’m always available. Please, Chief Wang, don’t trouble anyone else.”
Jiang Sui blinked her lashes, then slowly closed her eyes and exhaled softly.
Who would’ve thought Lu Yunze wasn’t a complete idiot? At a crucial moment, he could still be useful.
