Zhu Niao and Gou Yu didn’t have their usual plans to go to work today.
Instead, the two of them met up at Mixue Bingcheng, which was quite rare.
They used the one-yuan universal discount coupon they’d gotten during the Literature Society’s recruitment lottery.
They picked the innermost seats and sat down, each holding a cup of lemonade.
“I’m thinking it’s a good thing we’re not in Shanghai. Otherwise, the Oriental Pearl Tower would see me drinking Mixue Bingcheng and blast me with a laser,” Gou Yu said, taking a sip of his lemonade and sighing.
“It’s okay, you’re from Shandong. If you get attacked by the Oriental Pearl Tower, Confucius will crawl out of the ground and fight it.” Zhu Niao crossed her arms.
Then, she spoke again. “I think we still need to discuss something more important.”
“I know. The engagement banquet my parents arranged is coming up. My sister even gave you the day off today.” Gou Yu’s expression turned serious. “This is something we need to prepare for with all seriousness.”
Even though the whole engagement banquet seemed like a show, and the explanation to Zhu Niao was just a performance, it couldn’t be a real performance or a half-hearted one.
Although Gou Yu was living a wandering life, he was still a rich young master from a wealthy family.
It was definitely going to be a big event, and many people would attend.
Even if he was usually carefree, he’d have to restrain himself a little then.
“Speaking of which, what’s an engagement banquet like? I don’t think I’ve ever been to one,” Zhu Niao said.
“No kidding, I haven’t either. I’ve been to weddings, though. I just walked in shouting ‘Congratulations and get rich,’ ate my fill, and left.”
Gou Yu gave his very honest experience.
“When you sneak in, you can’t show any nervousness, or they’ll kick you out once they catch you.”
“Do you have a screw loose? This engagement banquet is for us. We’re the host family. How can it be the same as sneaking in as a guest?”
Zhu Niao reached across the table and poked Gou Yu’s head.
“Besides, do I need you to teach me about eating at a banquet?”
“Then how am I supposed to know what it’s like to host a banquet?”
Gou Yu said, suddenly remembering something. “You know what? I actually had a chance to know, but my parents didn’t give me that chance.”
“What do you mean?” Zhu Niao tilted her head.
“They didn’t invite me to their engagement banquet. Pretty heartless of them.”
“I think our top priority right now is to get you a psychiatry appointment.”
Zhu Niao sighed. “Forget it, I didn’t expect much from you. Since we don’t know the procedure, let’s just skip that part.”
“Skipping the plot is basically skipping life,” Gou Yu said faintly.
“If you’re tired of living, just say so.” Zhu Niao snatched Gou Yu’s cup of lemonade and took a big gulp. “I don’t believe you never skip ahead when you look for videos on websites.”
Gou Yu slowly lifted his head with a proud expression. “I never press the fast-forward button. That’s my life motto.”
“Wh—what the hell? Are you saying you’re a pilot who gets on the runway when the movie starts and is still circling in the air half an hour later?”
Zhu Niao looked horrified. “Are you even human? You’ve never made a mistake?”
“I have, actually.” Gou Yu looked pained. “Once, when I was about to land satisfied, an ad for The Venetian Macao suddenly popped up, and I had to make an emergency landing at the Macau casino. That’s the pain of a lifetime.”
“Isn’t that just your own fault?”
After saying that, Zhu Niao paused, then remembered the purpose of their discussion.
“Don’t change the subject. I’m talking about the engagement banquet. Since we don’t know the procedure, we can only think about other things.”
“What other things?” Gou Yu was taken aback. “We don’t even know the procedure. What else can we prepare?”
“Clothes! This isn’t a situation where you can just show up as a regular guest to eat. People are coming to eat at our banquet, and you’re still going to wear your yellow delivery uniform?” Zhu Niao tugged at Gou Yu’s clothes in frustration.
“First of all, I’m wearing this because my other clothes aren’t dry.” Gou Yu raised a finger and explained seriously. “And I don’t just have a yellow delivery uniform—I have a blue one too.”
“What a ‘two avenues to achieve the throne.’” Zhu Niao even clapped sarcastically. “If you want to embarrass yourself usually, that’s fine. But this time, you’ll be dragging me down with you. If you’re serious…”
Zhu Niao suddenly leaned in. “I’ll kill you then.”
“Young people shouldn’t be so bloodthirsty. It’s not like there’s an irreconcilable conflict between us.” Gou Yu said, taking back his lemonade.
“Actually, there is. You’ve been stealing my food more and more lately, and you refuse to spend a single cent outside. You’re wearing this outfit because you plan to go deliver food right after, aren’t you? What are you planning? Are you short on money recently?”
Zhu Niao pulled out that black card. “Don’t forget, we actually have money now…”
“No, it’s different. Those two kinds of money are different.” Gou Yu waved his hand, but his speech was hesitant.
It was like he’d bought something not suitable for minors and got caught by his parents.
Zhu Niao just looked at him suspiciously.
She could see Gou Yu was determined to keep it from her.
But she wasn’t going to get angry or throw a tantrum over his secret.
Because Gou Yu would never do anything bad to her on purpose. He would never hurt her.
That was the reputation he’d earned through years of testing.
Still, she really couldn’t figure out what this guy was up to.
“Actually, I think we don’t need to worry about clothes. My family will definitely take care of it. Otherwise, they’d be the ones losing face.” Gou Yu said. “As for the procedure, we can just look it up online. It’s more or less the same everywhere.”
With that, Gou Yu stood up and got ready to leave for his delivery job.
Before he left, he took the lemonade from the table.
He claimed it tasted better because Zhu Niao had drunk from it.
“Do you think I don’t know?” Zhu Niao bit her lower lip.
Gou Yu had been squeezing in as much time as possible for delivery work lately.
Apart from class time, Zhu Niao could only feel his warm embrace wrap around her in the dead of night when she was half-asleep.
She just felt Gou Yu was too tired.
And he was spending less time with her.
Suddenly, the phone on the table lit up.
A few messages came in—it was the Store Manager Lady inviting Zhu Niao to go shopping.
A solution for the clothes had arrived.
They definitely seem like the best relationship.
