Walking down the street, Ye Jinyi scrolled through her phone, transferring this month’s overdue rent to her landlord in one go.
This dump of an apartment might not have much going for it, but at least it was one of the few places she could actually afford.
Rent wasn’t too expensive—about 150 yuan a month—and besides, the landlady was a filthy-rich woman who owned dozens of residential units.
She was probably just bored, so she’d come by to stick another one of those notes on the door:
“You are now overdue, xx yuan.”
Ye Jinyi didn’t actually want to delay paying rent—it’s just that she was a noble among beasts of burden.
Most of her income went straight into medical expenses.
After all, for that kind of cultivation-level, soul-crushing work, there was no way to survive without some celestial-grade pills as backup.
But of course the company never gave her any. She had to buy them herself.
And one box after another, four to five hundred yuan apiece, just burned through all her money like it was nothing.
There just weren’t enough barefoot doctors in this world.
With all these profit-hungry pharmaceutical companies, how was anyone supposed to stay healthy?
After paying off the past few months of rent, Ye Jinyi figured she’d head over to hang out (and mooch food) at Huimengyi’s place.
After all, sisters stick together, right?
So what’s wrong with gaming and eating breakfast with your little sister?
A life lived for free is a life truly lived — Ye Jinyi.
Ye Jinyi walked ahead, but for some reason she kept feeling like there was danger behind her.
“Why does it feel like someone’s following me?”
She glanced back over her shoulder, but besides the usual flow of pedestrians, she didn’t see anything.
“Guess I’m just being paranoid…”
Turning her head forward again, she continued on her way.
“What sharp instincts!”
Only then did Xing Wei crawl out from beside a trash can, refocusing her eyes on the petite figure walking ahead.
She checked the message she’d sent to Mo Shuhua, then pocketed her phone and resumed tailing the loli.
Xing Wei silently prayed in her heart: Please let my senior get here soon.
She wasn’t confident.
At first, she had only thought the girl’s powers seemed abnormal.
But the moment she saw the spectrum radiating from her body, Xing Wei fully realized just how dangerous this girl was.
This was the one who had slipped away from her last time.
Now Xing Wei didn’t know how to handle her.
She couldn’t be sure whether the thoughts she’d discussed with her senior that night were right or wrong.
There was no proof that the girl was uncontrollable—but also no proof that she wasn’t.
“A prisoner’s dilemma…”
Xing Wei had already realized she was caught in a dangerous trap.
She couldn’t guarantee she had the strength to bear the consequences if she chose wrong.
So she hoped her senior would arrive quickly—not so much for support, but more like dragging someone else into the mess with her.
Better to share the blame than shoulder it alone.
After following in fits and starts for a while, Mo Shuhua arrived and found her.
Looking up at the tall building, Mo Shuhua asked, “You’re saying the Flame That Burns the World is inside this building right now?”
“I can’t guarantee that,” Xing Wei had no intention of carelessly vowing anything—setting up a flag like that was always a terrible idea.
“After all, with a calamity—something completely illogical—who knows if it’ll just vanish the moment it enters the building?”
“What I can promise, Senior, is that the last time I saw her, she was definitely inside this building.”
“Haaah~”
Xing Wei yawned as she spoke.
“I’m a little tired… pulling an all-nighter really wears you out.”
“Then go get some rest. I’ll take it from here.”
Xing Wei had already done enough. Mo Shuhua had no reason to push her any further.
The only complaint Mo Shuhua could reasonably make was that because of this incident, she had to take half a day off work—and lost fifty yuan in wages.
“Thank you for understanding.”
After thanking Mo Shuhua, Xing Wei turned to leave.
She really needed to catch up on sleep.
She’d done her part, and now it was up to the other magical girls to take over.
Once Xing Wei left the neighborhood, she gave Bai Tong a call.
When the call connected, Xing Wei fought off the sleepiness clouding her mind and spoke.
“Hey, Bai Tong, I’m kinda tired right now. I’m thinking of crashing at your place—would that be okay?”
After all, if she went home with dark circles under her eyes, her parents would definitely start asking questions. Better to stay with a friend for a while until the circles faded—probably less trouble that way.
Knock knock knock.
“Good morning, my lady sister!”
Ye Jinyi knocked on Huimengyi’s door, waiting for it to open.
“Welcome~”
Huimengyi opened the door, greeting Ye Jinyi warmly.
“Smells so good.”
Not long after the door opened, a wave of pleasant fragrance hit her straight on.
Hearing that, Ye Jinyi immediately put her hands on her hips, puffed out her flat little chest, and grinned with pride.
“Hmph~ I took a bath yesterday, okay? Of course I smell nice!”
Today, Ye Jinyi was overflowing with confidence.
And the reason she was in such high spirits?
Probably because she’d had a blast playing cards with Huimengyi last night.
Basically, gaming restored her self-esteem.
“All right, all right! Sis, let’s hurry up and go play!”
Ye Jinyi eagerly shoved Huimengyi into the house.
Today, she was going to spend the whole day with her beloved big sister!
Why, you ask?
Because being with her big sister made her happy, of course!
Work?
Hah—no way she’d ever work again in this lifetime.
Huimengyi led Ye Jinyi into her bedroom and let her sit on the bed.
“Wait here—I’ll go get some snacks.”
“Okay~!”
Ye Jinyi watched as Huimengyi left.
Once she was gone, she flopped down on the bed.
“So cozy~”
So this was what a beautiful girl’s bed was like?
Soft, fragrant, filled with girly energy!
Ye Jinyi rolled across the bed a few times, soaking in the softness and comfort.
After a while, Huimengyi returned with a plate of fruit and snacks.
“Let’s eat together.”
She placed the food on her study desk—after all, her desk was right next to the bed.
Sitting on the chair by the desk, she could easily eat and play with her little sister sitting on the bed.
“Then I won’t hold back!”
As soon as Ye Jinyi said that, she dove straight into the food—since she’d already been given permission, there was no reason not to mooch as much as possible.
Watching Ye Jinyi devour the snacks like a starving wolf, Huimengyi gently advised her, “No need to rush. Just take your time and eat slowly.”
Ding-dong!
Just then, Huimengyi’s phone chimed with a notification.
“Let me check this message real quick.”
She picked up her phone and opened it—it was an emergency alert from the official Magical Girl website.
“Flame That Burns the World, Info Update”
Huimengyi tapped the notice and looked at the content, only to see an image of a little loli dressed exactly like Ye Jinyi.
