“Um, Holy Maiden, could I ask you for a small favor?”
After walking out of the cathedral with Truth, Vieno rubbed the back of her head and asked.
“Let’s hear it. And just call me Truth.” Truth replied without turning her head.
Ever since she told Vieno there was a way for her to break through to King Rank, Vieno had been completely preoccupied with the thought.
So, without needing to guess, Truth knew this ‘small favor’ was definitely related to that.
And indeed, it was.
“Well, Truth…” Vieno began, choosing her words carefully, “Could you… personally write a letter to Wilona? Inviting her to Deya City in your capacity as the Holy Maiden. Otherwise, I’m afraid she won’t come…”
Vieno had already resolved to be a ‘bad aunt’.
The reason she wanted Truth to invite Wilona as the Holy Maiden was her fear that Wilona would be highly resistant to Deya City. After all, she had been bullied here before by the Hermit.
Fortunately, Wilona held quite a favorable impression of the Life Saintesses.
In the past, when Vieno took Wilona to play in the Kingdom of Sylvia’s capital, Wilona loved seeking out the Saintesses to play with. After all, they had more topics in common as peers.
Moreover, their statuses were similar. The Saintesses were the mortal representatives of the Goddess of Life, while Wilona was the Beast God’s secret, unpublicized Chosen One.
So, when chatting, they didn’t have to worry about revealing secrets and could speak freely.
If the Ninth Saintess extended an invitation now, Wilona would probably still come to make a friend. As for what happened after that… she’d leave it to the Hermit and Truth…
“Sure, no problem. Wait for me at the city gate then. I need to go back into the Mist first to report to the Hermit. I’ll bring the letter to you in a bit.”
Truth readily agreed and chose to part ways with Vieno at the city gate, sneaking alone into the Mist’s core region.
The part about reporting to the Hermit was all a lie. She simply couldn’t write letters.
After all, Chinese characters written with a feather pen wouldn’t be automatically converted into modern text by the Mist’s Authority.
So now, it was time for Ariel and Little Mist to make their entrance!
Truth needed to write two letters: one to Wilona and one to Kavier. And she also had to give Little Mist a simple little task…
…
Five minutes later, in the Mist’s core region.
“The world has five great cataclysms: Heavenly Fire, Storm, Earthquake, Death Tide, and… the Mist. But that’s the old saying… Nowadays, many believe the world has only four great cataclysms. The Mist, whether in influence or destructiveness… is no longer worthy of being called a cataclysm…”
Inside Truth’s small wooden cottage, on Ariel’s recommendation, Little Mist was trying to read various modern books.
This could both increase its understanding of the world and practice its literacy and speaking skills.
After just one more night, Little Mist was already able to read simple text fluently.
“So amazing…” Ariel sighed from a nearby lounge chair, watching Little Mist. This was the smartest monster she had ever seen. Ah, what a pity it met a master like the Seeker Demon.
BANG!
Suddenly, the cottage door was kicked open violently, startling Ariel into jumping up from her chair.
Little Mist also flinched, curling up behind a thick book, warily staring at the doorway.
“Hi, did you miss me?”
Truth, her right foot still raised from kicking the door, grinned and asked the two inside.
Then, in a flash, she appeared beside Little Mist, casually admiring the calligraphy sheets Little Mist had been practicing on recently.
“Not bad, learning pretty fast.”
Even though she couldn’t read it, Truth still offered a perfunctory critique and also gave Ariel some praise.
The latter, not daring to look Truth in the eye, replied softly, “It’s… it’s nothing, really. I’m not a great teacher. Little Mist is just smart.”
“Is that so? Wouldn’t have guessed! Even though its brain isn’t as big as a walnut.” Truth patted Little Mist’s cool, smooth head, making it instinctively flinch slightly in annoyance.
Your brain is the one that’s walnut-sized! I’m the incarnation of the Mist Will! Who do you think you’re looking down on!
“Alright, now it’s time to test your learning progress over these past few days.”
Ignoring Little Mist’s mood, Truth brought over a blank sheet of paper and a feather pen, placing them before Little Mist.
“Now, help me write a letter. I’ll dictate, you write!”
“Wuu…” Little Mist had no power to refuse in front of Truth.
Despite a thousand reluctances in its heart, it still picked up the feather pen and began writing a simple invitation letter for Truth:
[The Ninth Saintess of the Church of Life, Truth, sends her greetings. Hearing is not as good as seeing. I have heard that the Northern Royal Family has the world’s most adorable, most adventure-loving little cat…]
“Uh… Northern Royal Family… little cat?”
Standing by the lounge chair, Ariel stared at Truth’s back, slightly stunned. How did this demon get involved with the Northern Royal Family?
Or is it actually the real Truth controlling this cute body right now?
Probably not. The real Truth wouldn’t kick the door open. Plus, with Little Mist’s obvious fear, I think it’s the Seeker Demon in control!
So why is it inviting a ‘little cat’ from the Northern Royal Family to Deya City?
[The Mist has undergone earth-shaking changes recently. Adventurers come in an endless stream, making it very lively. Watching the adventurers enter the Mist in groups, chatting and laughing together, I am filled with envy.]
[I also wish to enter the Mist for a joyful adventure. However, the burden of being a Saintess is too heavy; almost no one is willing to team up with me. So…]
Truth planned to use the excuse of ‘adventuring together’ to lure the little cat over. Once she arrived, everything would be easy.
However, all of this was seen by Ariel… As Truth recited line after line, Ariel felt the purpose of this letter was very strange.
What does she mean, ‘adventurers enter the Mist chatting and laughing for a happy adventure’? Which adventurer who walked out of the Mist these past few days could manage a smile?
And what’s this about ‘the Saintess identity being too heavy’… This looks exactly like one of those letters meant to lure someone over to be exploited and consumed!
Could it be… this demon has set its sights on the Northern Royal Family and wants to trick one of their people over to use as a hostage?
Ariel thought to herself, as such actions were very much in line with a demon’s behavior.
No matter what, this demon definitely has ill intentions! Ariel saw through Truth’s little scheme, but she couldn’t stop it…
But Little Mist could.
Like Ariel, Little Mist also sensed the ill intent in Truth’s letter. And unlike Ariel, it could stop Truth’s evil plan!
It first quietly exchanged a glance with Ariel, then steeled its heart and decided to go for it!
In the subsequent writing, Little Mist directly, while Truth wasn’t paying attention, subtly thickened certain characters.
If you put these bolded characters together, they formed a sentence:
[This is a trap, help]
Little Mist not only warned the Northern Royal Family’s little cat that this was a trap but also tried to call for help for itself!
“Ah?!” Seeing Little Mist’s bold move, Ariel was so scared she hardly dared to breathe. Wait, the Seeker Demon isn’t stupid, right? This hint is way too obvious!
“Finished? Let me see.”
After the invitation letter was written, Truth pretended to pick it up and gave it a cursory glance, making Ariel’s and Little Mist’s hearts leap into their throats…
Hmm, the handwriting is nice, quite good-looking. But why are some characters noticeably thicker than others?
Probably because Little Mist was holding the feather pen with its tail.
Using a tail to hold a pen isn’t very stable, and it just learned to write recently. “Not bad.” Truth nodded.
“Excellent. Next is the next letter. The beginning is ‘To Kavier’…”
Truth paid no attention to the bolded characters at all and directly started dictating the next letter, leaving Ariel dumbfounded. Huh? She didn’t notice it?!
For a moment, Ariel couldn’t tell if the Seeker Demon was intentionally ignoring it or if it genuinely couldn’t read…
