Chapter 22: Disdain and Upgrading Again

“He’s called Lin Mo, and he’s really skilled. If he hadn’t stepped in earlier, those Zombies would have gotten inside,” Song Xue’er said.

“Lin Mo?” 

Chen Chen frowned, trying to recall the name, but he had never heard of him before.

“Hello.” 

Though anger simmered inside, Chen Chen had climbed to his current position precisely because he wasn’t impulsive. 

Suppressing his fury, he greeted Lin Mo.

“Mm, hello.” 

Lin Mo wasn’t a fool either he noticed Chen Chen’s unnatural demeanor but assumed Zhao Zitian had snitched on him. 

He didn’t dwell on it.

The student council president had been a big shot on campus before the apocalypse, and Chen Chen’s powerful family background only elevated his status. 

In the past, Lin Mo would’ve been nervous meeting someone like him. 

But now, with the world in ruins, none of that mattered. 

The Zombies outside didn’t care who you were.

The atmosphere in the office grew awkward. 

Song Xue’er had no intention of sticking around either. 

She tugged Lin Mo’s arm and led him out, leaving behind a scowling Chen Chen and a smug Zhao Zitian.

“Lin Mo, don’t take it to heart. Chen Chen might seem like that, but he’s actually not a bad person,” Song Xue’er said once they were outside.

“Oh.” 

Lin Mo responded flatly before falling silent and heading straight downstairs.

“Hey, Lin Mo! Where are you going? Aren’t you staying on the fifth floor?” 

Song Xue’er called after him.

“Why would I stay on the fifth floor?” 

Lin Mo turned back, his smile laced with mockery.

He had initially thought this place might be a decent refuge, but now it was clear-whether it was the “walking dead” on the fourth floor or the so-called higher-ups, they were all just a disorganized mess. 

Even in the apocalypse, they clung to their old social hierarchies and connections. 

Out of the hundreds here, only a few dozen had any real combat ability. 

If a horde of Zombies attacked, they’d be wiped out without a fight.

He had no time to waste playing power games or currying favor. 

He needed to grow stronger fast, then cross the city to find Xiaoya! 

“Find the right moment and leave…”

Lin Mo thought to himself.

Reaching the fourth floor, he ignored Zhou Kai and the others heading upstairs and continued downward. 

After some thought, he realized he had no intel about tomorrow’s supermarket trip, which left him uneasy. 

Before night fully fell, he decided to hunt down a Zombie and level up to Tier 3—that would give him a better chance.

“Hey, you just got here this afternoon, right? Where are you going?” the two guards on the third floor asked as he passed.

“Killing Zombies…” 

With that, Lin Mo strode off, fire axe in hand.

The guards exchanged glances, blinking in bewilderment. 

Killing Zombies? 

Was this guy insane?

Lin Mo didn’t care what others thought. 

Jogging downstairs, he began searching for Zombies. 

Strangely enough, their numbers had dwindled. 

After a long hunt, he finally found one-somehow, it had broken its leg but was still struggling to crawl forward, as if heading somewhere.

Lin Mo naturally finished it off with an axe. 

Immediately after, a voice echoed in his mind:

Congratulations, you have leveled up…

Accompanied by the pleasant chime, Lin Mo’s level rose to 3. 

He then checked his stats—after all, that was the most important thing. 

The next moment, his eyes widened in shock…
