Under the tireless support and prodding of her two sisters, Luo Shuangxing finally gathered her courage the next day and lightly touched Yi’s lips.
Well, although she didn’t go any further, she had at least taken the first step, which was worth celebrating.
With her younger sister’s love life finally on the right track, Luo Shuangyue turned her attention back to serious business.
Learning, experiments, and a few months passed in the blink of an eye.
“If you want to make that space fragment habitable for life, you first need to adjust these parameters to a normal range. Look at these values; the gap between them and the world we’re in now is far too large,” Monice explained to Luo Shuangyue, who was sitting not far away, as she pointed to several pieces of data projected on a transparent screen.
Over these past few months, she had tested Luo Shuangyue’s space inside and out.
Then, by comparing the calculated data with the current human world, she finally identified the parameters that needed to be modified.
Without changing this data, that space would never be suitable for life.
Luo Shuangyue couldn’t exactly just toss in some plastic flowers to make it look nice, could she?
“Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I just didn’t know what range I needed to adjust them to. This data is a huge help!” Luo Shuangyue nodded vigorously. Her Boss really was reliable after all.
She felt like a child facing a pile of building blocks without knowing how to assemble them.
What Monice was doing was letting Luo Shuangyue know roughly what she needed to build.
“By the way, have you mastered the technique of adjusting the world yet?”
“Not yet. I have to figure this kind of thing out on my own. It won’t be that fast,” Luo Shuangyue said, shaking her head.
She had a sudden thought. ‘Could the world consciousness have sent me this space fragment with some other motive in mind?’
Perhaps it wanted her to focus all her energy on tinkering with the space fragment so she wouldn’t cause trouble in the world.
Adjusting even the most basic world parameters was a grueling ordeal for Luo Shuangyue.
After all, this wasn’t a game where she could modify individual, inexplicable values one by one. Everything was interconnected; a single nudge could affect the entire system.
Even the slightest change could cause unexpected shifts within the space fragment.
Fortunately, the interior of the space fragment was completely empty.
Otherwise, given the frequency of Luo Shuangyue’s recent experiments, any living beings inside would definitely be cursing her name.
Other worlds only faced a world-ending crisis once every few thousands or tens of thousands of years.
Why was there an apocalypse every few days here?
“Sigh, I’ll have to take it slow. I estimate it’ll take at least a few years before I can get the data right,” Luo Shuangyue said, scratching her head.
“It’s not like you’re short on time, so just take it slow. The Magic Department isn’t going to kick you out for using too many resources,” Monice said with a roll of her eyes.
Truth be told, Luo Shuangyue used the fewest resources among them.
The Magic Department currently had a pile of major projects underway.
The Magical Beast Disaster had indeed disappeared, but the cities destroyed and the land polluted by the Demons wouldn’t simply recover just because the creatures were gone.
New cities had to be built, and polluted land had to be purified.
The Magic Department was currently overwhelmed with work.
Even the New Buds, who had just become Magical Girls, were being dragged off by their Mentors to do grueling labor.
“Oh, right. The Magic Department’s current research focus has shifted to reproduction technology. If you’re interested, you can go take a look,” Monice mentioned.
Because of the previous Great Crisis, the world was suddenly filled with a vast number of Transhumans.
However, Monice’s transformation technology had a flaw that couldn’t be corrected: all the resulting Transhumans were girls.
This led to a severe gender imbalance in human society.
Those Transhuman girls, who were originally men, were unlikely to seek out the opposite sex as partners.
Predictably, without human intervention, the birth rate would plummet in the coming years.
The Magic Department certainly wouldn’t resort to something as terrible as forced pairings, so they had to find another way to solve the problem of the dwindling population.
The simplest and most acceptable solution was, without a doubt, same-sex reproduction technology.
This was much easier to accept than things like cloning or Artificial Humans.
“So, how is the progress?”
“I heard they found a new method. They use Magic Power to stimulate the fusion of the two mothers’ reproductive cells and then cultivate them in a special vessel.” Monice didn’t know much about it herself; she had only heard others mention it a few times.
“That sounds pretty interesting. I’ll head over and take a look later then.” Luo Shuangyue had been feeling a bit bored lately.
She was getting tired of constantly tinkering with her space fragment and wanted to see something else for a change of pace.
“Sure. I’ll let Cecilia know and have her approve your access.”
Speaking of which, Luo Shuangyue suddenly noticed that Monice’s tone when mentioning Cecilia seemed different than before.
In the past, Monice’s tone had been full of disdain, but now, that disdain seemed to have vanished.
“Boss, has your relationship with the Vice Minister improved?”
“We see each other all the time, and I don’t have any deep grudges against her. It’s normal for our relationship to get better,” Monice said, glancing at Luo Shuangyue, wondering why she had brought it up.
In the past, she and Vice Minister Cecilia had truly loathed one another.
But they were cooperating now, and Cecilia’s attitude was quite good, so what was wrong with returning the favor?
Monice didn’t mind putting on a smile for a deep-pocketed benefactor who supported her research.
In the past, Cecilia was an enemy who tried to stop her from researching Transhumans. Now, she was a good person who supported her research.
How could her attitude stay the same?
“In the past, she wanted to deal with me and wouldn’t let me research Transhumans. Now that she supports me, why should I still hate her? Should I push her back into opposing me?” Monice asked, spreading her hands.
That actually made a lot of sense. Luo Shuangyue gave a soft click of her tongue. She had thought she might witness an old tree blooming with new flowers, but it seemed Monice was destined to be alone for the rest of her life. With that temper of hers, who could ever put up with her?
“I get it, I get it. So, Boss, what do you plan to do after you finish the work here?”
“Let’s finish the task at hand before discussing what comes next. The situation on your end won’t be resolved anytime soon.” Monice felt that Luo Shuangyue’s question lacked any real depth.
Unless Luo Shuangyue suddenly had a flash of inspiration and made her space fragment flourish, Monice would still have to stay here and work hard to help her.
According to her current estimates, in the most optimistic scenario, this job would take several years.
That was more than enough time for her to find her next interesting project.
