A Magic Cannon was a very conventional means of attack for a magical girl. It could be fired instantly or charged up. The longer it was charged, the greater its power, and the more mana needed to be injected. It was just like manufacturing a bomb; the power varied depending on the amount of explosive material. A small one could be used as a firecracker, while a larger one could level a building.
The mana Yin Lin injected into her Magic Cannon, however, was so massive that it transcended the realm of conventional attack magic and reached the level of strategic magic. The thick pillar of light blasted out, surging toward the elite high-level Aberrant. By the time the creature realized the bombardment was headed its way, the blast was already upon it.
The fear of death forced it to fire a Ray Cannon at a moment’s notice. Perhaps it wanted to counter the beam, or maybe it hoped to detonate the Magic Cannon early? Whatever its intent, the light of the Ray Cannon was instantly eclipsed and annihilated within the 100% charged Magic Cannon.
The creature knew it needed to flee, but its world was limited by the laws of physics. Even as an Aberrant, it had to deal with the disadvantage of a slow start. Before the creature could escape, Yin Lin manually detonated the Magic Cannon.
Earth-shattering power was unleashed. A milky-white explosion ring expanded rapidly, instantly engulfing the fleeing Aberrant. A visible shockwave pushed outward in all directions, snapping trees in the timber yard and even shoving aside the clouds in the sky.
The once pitch-black night was transformed into day, the light so bright it made people’s eyes ache. It was likely that a portion of the citizens in Yiri City could see the brilliance.
As for Green Field, who was in close proximity, she felt the terrifying weight of this power deeply. Crouched in a depression in the ground, she didn’t dare move. She used her whips to anchor herself into the soil so she wouldn’t be blown away. Even so, the shockwave made her internal organs ache and left her deaf for a time. Had she been any closer, even if the milky-white explosion hadn’t touched her, she felt she would have died from the shockwave alone.
After a while, the storm gradually subsided. The pitch-black night returned, and even the wind died down until not a breeze could be felt for miles. A portion of the timber yard had been completely destroyed.
As for that elite flying-type high-level Aberrant? Evidently, its physical durability was somewhat inferior to Lightning Man’s. No body tissue remained; it had been reduced to ash.
The plan had been to capture the Aberrant, but now, there was nothing left. The staff at the Countermeasure Center let out a sigh of relief. They stopped worrying about the capture, though it was a bit of a pity.
Huang Yi held his phone and typed a few words. He didn’t have the heart to scold her, nor did he have the standing to do so. In the end, he simply wrote: **[Good job. Thank you.]**
With the Aberrant dealt with, Yin Lin landed and met up with Green Field. At this moment, Green Field was becoming somewhat agitated again, as if her body and mind were making separate decisions. Ultimately, her head regained control over her body, and she didn’t do anything strange.
With the sky cleared and safety restored, they took their belongings and flew away, choosing not to take the subway this time.
In the early hours of the morning, the Countermeasure Center dispatched soldiers to the scene to rescue the injured members of the Special Task Force. The Failure Squad followed along, maintaining high-altitude surveillance. Their expressions were grim; failing to capture Yin Lin had left them humiliated, and now having to maintain order over the timber yard from the sky and the ground felt incredibly stifling.
Whenever they encountered the occasional low-level Aberrant wandering over, they acted with ruthless efficiency. They poured out firepower as if it cost them nothing, blasting any approaching low-level Aberrant into dust.
Most people at the Countermeasure Center stayed up all night cleaning up the aftermath of the timber yard incident. As for the two instigators, they parted ways as soon as they returned to the city. They didn’t do anything overly sentimental; they were simply exhausted.
Yin Lin had originally wanted to pay a visit to the Goddess of Contracts, but after thinking it over, she decided against it. Sleeping was more important.
By the time she woke up again, it was nearing midday. The weather was clear. Her body ached severely; she had been hit by the Aberrant’s cannons a few times and had sustained some injuries.
She was startled when she saw the time. She was late. Just as she was about to get up to wash and go to work, she suddenly remembered that she was still on sick leave. Only then did she relax and continue to lounge in bed.
She felt like she had forgotten something, but she couldn’t remember it for the moment. ‘Forget it, I’ll keep sleeping.’
She finally got out of bed half an hour later. Looking at the man with a face full of stubble in the mirror, she used a razor to tidy up her appearance. After making some breakfast, she brought it into the living room and turned on the television to eat.
The news was broadcasting the events at the timber yard from the previous night. As usual, they concealed the involvement of the magical girls. They only stated that the timber yard had been attacked by Aberrants. To protect humanity’s precious timber resources, the Eastern Union had deployed the Special Task Force and the Failure Squad, who fought a great battle against the Aberrants and successfully protected the yard.
Liang Tai’s livestream was quite lively as well. People were discussing last night’s events, and he was even going against the grain by playing some videos recorded by citizens. By comparing the light from the timber yard to videos of Yin Lin’s previous Magic Cannons, it was essentially confirmed that Yin Lin was the one causing the commotion there.
Song Wuli picked up his two phones to check them.
There was nothing urgent on Old Song’s phone. The work group was still talking about work, and some other groups were chatting about the disturbance at the timber yard.
As for Yin Lin’s phone, there was a major problem. It was packed with private messages.
Liang Tai: “What happened last night? Were you there? Give me some exclusive info, please!”
Old Song thought about it and replied: “A high-level flying-type Aberrant appeared at the timber yard. It’s been dealt with.”
He then opened another message.
Huang Yi: “Look, your tantrum is over, you’ve caused enough of a scene, and your anger should be gone by now. It’s time to return those items. We’re waiting to research them.”
He was referring to the items related to the Star Summoning Society that Yin Lin had intentionally taken from the timber yard, such as that weapon.
Song Wuli considered this and replied: “I haven’t had enough fun yet. We’ll talk after I’ve played with them to my heart’s content.”
Possessing them was actually useless to him since he couldn’t research them. He didn’t know how to conduct scientific research, nor did he know anyone who did. He couldn’t exactly take them to a university for a professor to study, right? No one with a functioning brain would dare do that. Although Song Wuli and Yin Lin weren’t geniuses, they certainly wouldn’t do something that foolish.
He continued to check other messages. There were quite a few from Jin Luan and Huan Hong, along with several missed voice calls.
He opened the messages to look.
Jin Luan: “Where are you? Why aren’t you here yet?”
Jin Luan: “Did you forget something?”
‘Ah… I remember now.’ There was that training camp they were supposed to have together.
He quickly finished his breakfast, found a place to transform, applied makeup, and changed into casual clothes. His body still ached quite a bit, and several spots were still swollen.
Suddenly, Old Song’s phone received a message from Greta. She said she wanted to request another long leave. Aside from the issue of her injuries, she said she wanted to do something meaningful.
Greta: “During this long life, I have gradually come to understand some things. Humans are fragile.”
Song Wuli: “Speak like a normal person.”
Greta: “In short, I’m requesting some time off to walk around Yiri City, take a look at things, and understand the local geography, customs, and folklore.”
Song Wuli: “I can only report this upward for you. I’m not sure if it will be approved. What you said is too abstract; I don’t really know what you mean.”
Greta: “Thank you.”
Recalling how hard Greta worked, it seemed she always had some personal business to attend to. She appeared indifferent to anything outside of those private matters.
For some reason, Song Wuli thought of Magical Girl Green Field again. He felt they shared some similarities.
He sighed and continued on his way, pondering an old question while scratching his head.
‘Who on earth is Magical Girl Green Field? Damn it, it’s so hard to guess!’
