Her little face was still burning red, her heart pounding so wildly in her chest it felt like it might leap out of her throat.

Making up her mind was one thing, but now that it came to this, the bone-deep shame and humiliation swept over her like freezing tides, wave after wave, threatening to drown her.

Steady footsteps drew closer, each one treading straight on her heart.
