Demon Hunter Order.
As the name suggests, it is an order formed by a group of like-minded individuals, united in their purpose to hunt demons.
But why would they suddenly come to this tavern to conduct an inspection?
Could it be that the hideout she had carefully chosen based on her experience during the Hero era wasn’t as safe as she thought?
Ye Chi’s eyes were filled with confusion.
Or had her identity as a demon been exposed?
Impossible.
She immediately dismissed the thought.
She was well-versed no, intimately familiar with the methods used in this world to identify demons.
Three years ago, the most advanced way to distinguish demons was through blood and tissue analysis, which required time or the involvement of sorcerers skilled in special magic.
No matter how fast human reconnaissance had evolved, the special disguise granted by the Hero’s Mark was more than enough to block all magical detection.
As for blood or flesh her true form was Slime, after all. Her composition was mostly water.
The exact percentage of water in a human body escaped her memory, but it wasn’t much different from hers as a Slime.
In short, there was no risk of her demon identity being discovered.
It seemed something else had happened for the Demon Hunter Order to choose to show up personally.
Having figured this out, Ye Chi’s mood didn’t improve.
The troubling issue now was that her identity was fake. If they didn’t investigate too closely, that was fine, but if they scrutinized her thoroughly, it would spell trouble.
“Whatever, fight fire with fire, water with earth. At worst, I’ll spend a few days in detention free meals and accommodation, after all…” Ye Chi muttered inwardly as she sluggishly opened the door.
Just as she expected, the tavern’s manager stood awkwardly to one side. On the other side were three knights from the Order. They wore no heavy armor typical of knights, only simple gray-white robes, each embroidered on the chest with a blood rose burning like a flame.
“Honorable Miss Vyea, sorry to disturb your rest.”
Vyea was the name Ye Chi was currently using. Revealing her real name might attract unnecessary trouble.
Three years was not enough time to erase the impact she had left on this land as the Night Hero.
The tavern manager bowed slightly, showing considerable respect to this guest whom the owner had specially instructed to keep an eye on.
Being personally tasked by the boss likely meant they were from the Capital. Or maybe, just maybe, someone’s noble child who had read too many adventure tales and ran off to the frontier for excitement…
Whatever the case, the manager could only try to do his job flawlessly.
With that thought, the manager looked at Ye Chi apologetically:
“Recently, some troubling incidents have occurred in the city. According to the Bureau of Purge’s judgment, there seem to be malicious demons causing chaos.” He paused, then continued:
“The Order’s knights are conducting their routine duties by performing a safety inspection of every corner of our tavern…”
“I understand.”
Ye Chi said softly, pushing the half-opened door fully open. Standing by the door with one hand on her hip, she looked up at the few outside and reminded them:
“I understand your work, but please be careful not to mess up my room.”
“Once again, we apologize, Miss Vyea.” The tavern manager said, “We will provide you with a free luxurious dinner later.”
After speaking, the manager stepped aside. The three knights exchanged a glance, and the leader stepped forward.
He lowered his head slightly, glancing at the girl pretty and cute to a fault.
“What’s wrong? Aren’t you here to inspect for demons?” Ye Chi urged coldly, “Why are you just standing there?”
Facing the scrutinizing gaze of the Demon Hunter knights, Ye Chi showed no sign of panic, only eager to send them off as quickly as possible.
Demons, heroes, demon hunters, elves, witches, evil or justice it was all trouble she no longer wanted to deal with.
She thought to herself: from now on, she would give up drinking, give up lust, give up all the bad and unnecessary desires she had in her human days.
“I am born for a purpose; even if I squander my fortune, I will regain it all!”
Hmph, after giving it up, she wouldn’t so easily fall into traps carefully laid by others and waste years of hard work.
“This lovely lady, we mean no offense.”
The Demon Hunter knight sniffed the thick scent of alcohol in the room. Beneath his silver helmet, his brows furrowed slightly:
“Based on your registration information, your age wouldn’t permit you to purchase such liquor. And your guardian…”
So what about that?
Ye Chi inhaled sharply, biting back the bitter words on the tip of her tongue, and instead said:
“That’s not mine.”
“But you still smell of alcohol?” another female knight said.
“Being in a room that smells like alcohol for a long time would leave some scent, right?” Ye Chi crossed her arms and emphasized, “Besides, your priority now is to find demons, to fight against those treacherous and hateful demons not to quibble over a normal person’s drinking habits!”
“A little girl who looks no older than fourteen, appearing alone in an adult tavern and addicted to alcohol… isn’t that strange?” The female knight seemed to recall certain dangerous rumors from the Capital.
“I heard some high-ranking nobles in the Capital have strange fetishes, raising young…”
“Fino.”
The leader knight interrupted the female knight’s rambling thoughts and ordered:
“You check this lady’s room. We’ll wait here at the door.”
“…Miss…” The female knight immediately fell silent, clenched her fist in salute, glanced briefly at Ye Chi’s darkening face, and then entered the room.
Moments later.
The female knight returned to report.
“Report, Captain. No demonic presence was detected in the room. But…”
“Enough.” The knight captain waved his hand to stop his subordinate. “If there’s none, that’s fine. Let’s move on to the next room. The longer we delay, the harder it will be to find the demon that slipped in.”
“…Yes.”
“Phew.”
The three Demon Hunter knights left to continue investigating other guest rooms. The tavern manager sighed in relief, maintaining his professional smile as he bowed to Ye Chi, whose face remained expressionless:
“Miss Vyea, we will send someone to provide you a free dinner later. Please enjoy your rest.”
After everyone left and the corridor grew quiet again, Ye Chi returned to her room and shut the door, cutting off all external light.
Leaning against the door, her pale green eyes stared into the darkness, her voice cold and emotionless:
“What did you do to the female knight who just came to search?”
Silence lingered for a moment.
A pair of crimson eyes slowly lit up from the shadows.
A petite figure stretched out like a black cat in the corner.
Her eyes possessed an otherworldly beauty a scarlet iris surrounded by a thin, flowing golden ring like molten gold.
These were unforgettable eyes, belonging to no human.
