“Th-thank you… classmate.”
Tang Wanyue was so dizzy with hunger that she could hardly think straight. Seeing that Tang Cheng had retreated to a safe distance, she hesitated for a moment before finally stepping into the book café across the street.
“Hey, she actually went in there!”
“Is she not afraid of getting bitten?”
“She’s seriously staying in the same room with a zombie?!”
Inside the steakhouse, everyone stared in wide-eyed disbelief as they watched Tang Wanyue enter the café. Not a single one of them would dare share a room with Tang Cheng—who had clearly turned into a zombie—no matter how much food was in there.
Tang Cheng had retreated into the kitchen, the door only partially closed, leaving just a sliver open. He hadn’t expected her to actually accept his invitation. As the old saying goes: Food is the first step to communication between people. It was absolutely true.
Tang Wanyue nervously scanned the interior of the book café, trying to take in the layout. Her mind kept racing with the worst-case scenario: What if that classmate suddenly attacks me?
But the moment her eyes fell on the steaming porridge and the delicate snacks on the table, she couldn’t help but swallow hard.
Sensing her caution and fear, Tang Cheng calmly spoke from the kitchen, his voice echoing into the café.
“The food is on the table. Don’t worry, I won’t come out of the kitchen. If you’re really that worried, you can even take my access card and—”
“N-no need…”
Even though her heart was full of fear, Tang Wanyue still waved her hand gently and replied with sincere gratitude,
“Really… thank you. Not only did you save me, but now you’re even sharing your food with me…”
“It’s nothing. Go ahead and eat while it’s still warm—otherwise your breakfast will get cold.”
“Okay… th-then I won’t hold back…”
Bowing toward the kitchen, Tang Wanyue expressed her thanks before sitting down at the table.
Laid out before her was a pot of fragrant lean meat porridge. Scrambled eggs and stir-fried vegetables were neatly plated beside it, along with some cakes and snacks that the café kept in stock.
She was already starving, and at this point, she couldn’t care less about maintaining the grace and dignity expected of her as the class disciplinary committee member. She grabbed the food and began shoveling it into her mouth, too hungry to hold back.
“Cough, cough… hot, hot—!”
She choked, then burned her tongue—it was obvious she had let hunger get the better of her. But even in that panicked, fumbling state, there was something adorably clumsy about her.
Her long black hair draped over her shoulders, her pale face looked fragile, and her school uniform—ripped earlier by the escaped prisoner—was still hanging loosely on her. The whole image made her look pitiful.
“Mm… mmph…”
As she stuffed food into her mouth, Tang Wanyue suddenly started to sob. Tears welled up in her eyes and spilled down her cheeks, soaking her pale and delicate face.
“Eh? Why are you crying?”
Tang Cheng leaned toward the kitchen door in concern. “Is it… not good?”
“No… it’s really good.”
Tang Wanyue’s voice choked with emotion. “It’s just that… the taste of this porridge suddenly reminded me of my mom. I don’t even know how she’s doing right now…”
“Don’t worry, maybe your mom has already evacuated. Earlier, I saw special forces soldiers trying to rescue survivors.”
Tang Cheng tried to comfort her from behind the kitchen door.
“R-Really? Do you think they’ll come rescue us too?”
The mention of a rescue team sparked a sliver of hope in her otherwise hopeless eyes.
“Th-They probably will…”
Tang Cheng hesitated for a moment, not wanting to crush her spirit. But in truth, he already knew those special ops soldiers would never come back. The entire city was already overrun with zombies. It was completely destroyed.
“I wonder if they’ll even be able to find us…”
Tang Wanyue clung to the hope he offered, placing her last shred of faith in the promise of a rescue.
“They will.”
That was all Tang Cheng could say to comfort her. Quickly, he changed the subject.
“By the way… are you all out of food and water over there?”
