At five-thirty, she had already finished cooking.
Sitting on the edge of the sofa, Su Yao glanced at the time on her phone and began to feel a little restless. Normally, at this hour, she should have arrived.
Maybe something came up and delayed her? Thatโs what she thought.
After all, Mu Nanqiu was already a third-year student and had started preparing for the postgraduate entrance exam. It was perfectly normal for her to get busier, Su Yao told herself not to get anxious, not to overthink thingsโshe would come home.
Speaking of the postgraduate examโฆ
Su Yao still hadnโt figured out what plans she had for her own future. With Mu Nanqiuโs help, she could probably finish college without a hitch, but after Graduation, she really had no idea what she should do. If she went out to look for a job, what could she even find?
She was actually majoring in Chinese Linguistics. Back when she chose her major, she just glanced at the list, closed her eyes, and tapped randomly. Sheโd heard that there werenโt many job options after Graduation. If sheโd studied English, it would have been a bit betterโat least she could become an English Teacher, or even a Translator if she was good enough.
Su Yao didnโt even dare to imagine being a teacher. She felt sitting under the Classroom Podium was already enough; she had no desire to stand at the front and be watched by others for several hours every day.
So, the whole plan was to take the Public Servant Exam, right?
But it was really tough, too. Su Yao just wanted to lie at home and make money, and if she wasnโt happy, she could go find Mu Nanqiu and hang around with her for a bit.
After wandering through her thoughts, her attention returned to Mu Nanqiu. She checked the time again. Not much time had passed, but Su Yao felt as if a whole year had gone by. She stood up from the sofa and paced back and forth in the living room, then walked over to the dining table. Looking at the covered dishes, she felt a bit unhappy inside.
If only Mu Nanqiu appeared right now, her bad mood would disappear instantlyโbut unfortunately, she didnโt.
Su Yao flopped onto the table, scrolling through her phone. When she got tired of that position, she ran back to the sofa. Seeing that it was now six oโclock, Su Yao grew anxious and wanted to call Mu Nanqiu. But then she thought, maybe Mu Nanqiu was out having dinner or something. As the heiress, it was normal for her to have social obligations, right?
Although Miss Mu didnโt act like a proper heiress at allโSu Yao found her quite down-to-earth. But then she remembered visiting Mu Nanqiuโs place, The Mansion, last time, the one with an actual garden. If she hadnโt spent so much time surfing online, sheโd definitely have been intimidated.
Su Yao wasnโt particularly sensitive to moneyโat least not after a certain amount. After all, she had never really worked hard for it; she lived off her savings or made a little from the occasional online opportunity, and she was generally quite frugal.
She might fuss over a hundred or two, but if one or two hundred million landed in her hands, she honestly wouldnโt know how to spend it. If that ever happened, Su Yao thought she could consult Mu Nanqiu. Speaking of which, she would definitely know what to do.
โWhy am I thinking about her again?โ
Su Yao furrowed her delicate brows, looking at the wallpaper on her phone with deep resentment. It was a photo of her and Mu Nanqiu together, set as her wallpaper ever since she got a new phone. The background was a bit too plain, though, and it hurt her eyes at night.
โWhy arenโt you back yetโฆโ
Su Yao slipped her feet out of her fuzzy slippers and kicked up toward the ceiling while lying on her back. There was no particular reason for itโshe was just messing around.
Lonely, empty, cold feetโฆ Woman, come home already~
Another half hour passed, and she couldnโt wait any longer. She opened her contacts and dialed Mu Nanqiuโs number.
โWhere are you?โ
Without realizing it, Su Yaoโs tone was filled with the plaintive tone of a little wife. She didnโt even notice it herself. On the other end, Mu Nanqiu was a bit stunned for a moment. After thinking for a few seconds, she briefly explained what had happened today.
She had hit someone. Although surveillance footage showed the other party had changed lanes without checking for cars behind, Mu Nanqiu was going a bit over the speed limit. Lots of people speed on the road, but she just happened to run into trouble.
After the electric bike fell, Mu Nanqiuโs car veered into the inner fence. She wasnโt hurtโexcept her chest had been squeezed pretty hard. She didnโt know if it would bruise. Su Yao didnโt quite understand why she was paying attention to thatโฆ
The scene was rather miserable, so someone called the police. Right now, she was resting at the Police Station. As for responsibility for the accident, Mu Nanqiu either didnโt care or didnโt want Su Yao to knowโshe was vague about it.
Su Yao only picked out six words from all that: โpay money, pay money, pay money.โ
Listening to what Mu Nanqiu had gone through in the past hour, Su Yao went from initial shock and fear, to a sharp intake of breath, and then just an โohโโso thatโs what happened.
Even so, she was still worried. After hesitating for a moment, Su Yao asked, โDo you want me to come keep you company?โ
Mu Nanqiu wanted to refuse, but she knew Su Yao would come even if she said no. This was more of a notice than a request, so she could only helplessly agree, โAlright.โ
โOkay, Iโll be right over!โ
Once she got permission, Su Yao immediately started getting ready to leave.
Mu Nanqiu looked at the phone screen that had already gone dark and sighed softly. She didnโt really want Su Yao going out on her own without her. She felt Su Yao was a little too easy to coax out. If someone pretended to be her one day, Su Yao would probably be fooled right away.
But then she found her own thoughts a little amusing. The process wasnโt all that complicated, and the result came out soon enough.
โSecondary responsibilityโฆโ
After reading it over, Mu Nanqiu breathed a small sigh of relief. Mainly, she didnโt want her family to know about this. Although it wasnโt a serious matter, with Mrs. Muโs personality, she would definitely want to see things for herself. Just seeing it on video wouldnโt reassure her. If Mu Nanqiu were still a child, Mrs. Mu would probably check her inside and out to make sure she was fine.
Mu Nanqiu was often annoyed by Mrs. Muโs intense need for control.
Sheโd originally planned to leave as soon as things were settled, but she hadnโt expected Su Yao to callโand insist on coming over. So she had no choice but to wait.
โThe girl can leave now.โ
โIโm waiting for someone to pick me up.โ
โโฆโ
That person walked away dejectedly. Before long, Su Yao, who had taken a cab, arrived. She couldnโt even recall how she communicated with the driver. There just happened to be a taxi nearby, and she got in without worrying about the price. Thenโฆ she probably just called out โPolice Stationโ to the driver.
The driver, seeing the anxious and breathless Su Yao, started quickly. The car sped up to a speed that was high even for the city, and he didnโt say a word the whole way, driving with full concentration until they reached the Police Station.
Getting out of the car, Su Yao frowned at the main entrance. Was this the place?
But there was no time to think about that now. She rushed straight inside, and Mu Nanqiu, who was calmly sitting in a chair, soon saw Su Yao darting in from outside. She was a little surprisedโhadnโt she said there was nothing to worry about?
There was really no need to be so anxious.
