Accidentally added goji berries to the red sugar water.
That’s a pretty good cold joke. It definitely deserves a spot in the exclusive cold joke collection just for the two of them.
Zhu Niao laughed angrily, raised her hand, and held up one finger: “I bid one ‘Mom.’”
This even stunned Gou Yu, who dropped the little kitten he was holding onto the floor, staring blankly at Zhu Niao on the bed.
“To be honest, that’s not how you bid at an auction. If you bid that high right off the bat, people will just target you directly.” Gou Yu actually started to educate Zhu Niao about auctions.
“Then I’ll add one ‘Dad.’ Both chips come out of you.” Zhu Niao raised a second finger.
Gou Yu looked genuinely nervous as he handed the red sugar water to Zhu Niao: “Please spare my parents, leave them alive.”
“That depends on your sincerity.” Zhu Niao glanced at Gou Yu, took the red sugar water, and carefully sipped it.
It was lightly sweet, warm with a slight burn—the exact temperature Zhu Niao liked.
Actually, neither Gou Yu nor Zhu Niao had gotten their period before, so naturally, neither of them knew how to take care of it.
Zhu Niao was a little curious, though. She thought it was barely a pleasant surprise.
“Where did you get the red sugar and goji berries? We don’t have either at home, right?” Zhu Niao held up the glass and looked at the red liquid inside, along with the red goji berries floating on top.
“Oh, that.” Gou Yu scratched his head. “Out of the two food deliveries I made earlier, one of them happened to be for this. It had red sugar, goji berries, and a bunch of other stuff, so I just took some for now.”
Zhu Niao was stunned, staring at Gou Yu.
Whoever ordered that delivery was probably going to suffer quite a bit this early autumn.
But what Zhu Niao cared about was something else.
“You used that delivery for me, so how much do I owe you?” She held the cup and didn’t even dare to meet Gou Yu’s eyes.
She not only wasted Gou Yu’s time but also his money.
And the most ridiculous part was that her so-called reason was simply to see Gou Yu, to have him by her side, rather than being alone in the empty house.
That purpose and request didn’t seem like a valid reason for Zhu Niao to do as she pleased, nor was it a reason for Gou Yu to indulge her so much.
“How much could that stuff cost? If you want to pay, then pay. I was going to buy it for you anyway, just took it from the customer first.”
Gou Yu gave a thumbs up. “I already told the customer just now, sent him money to reorder.”
Looks like no one will be suffering too much this early autumn because Zhu Niao stole expired delivery.
“You old dog…” Zhu Niao drank half of the red sugar water, but really couldn’t drink more. “I’m asking you seriously—answer me seriously.”
“If you need something, just say so.” Gou Yu really sounded like a loyal servant at this moment.
“Do you… think I’m troublesome?”
Gou Yu heard the question he expected.
He looked up at the weak little bird on the bed.
Broken, gentle.
She was the one he loved.
His Zhu Niao always repeated this question to herself after receiving kindness: Do you really deserve this?
His Zhu Niao could never honestly accept all the good things given to her, but by instinct, she craved that kindness from others.
His Zhu Niao always spread her kindness and beauty to those around her, but she always forgot about herself.
Gou Yu gave a bitter smile and sighed, then walked to the bedside.
He didn’t answer Zhu Niao’s question directly but pointed at her sitting on the bed, the thin nightgown leaning against the cold wooden headboard and wall.
“You said you were cold. Why not lean on something?” Gou Yu said as he picked up a large stuffed toy nearby to place behind her back.
But Zhu Niao refused. “No, Bruce can’t be used to lean on.”
Gou Yu lifted the toy, puzzled. It seemed this toy not only had a name, unlike the little orange cat, but also some kind of human rights.
“Fine.” Gou Yu put the toy back on the bed and shrugged.
Then, he took off his shoes and lifted the edge of Zhu Niao’s blanket.
Naturally, he saw Zhu Niao’s slender, straight legs curled up under the quilt, even the slight wrinkles of the nightgown.
“What are you doing?!” Zhu Niao snapped awake like a startled cat, quickly shifting from sitting to lying down, holding the corner of the blanket he had just lifted.
“You said you were a little cold and wanted me to find a way to help, right?” Gou Yu’s tone sounded perfectly reasonable. “And you said Bruce couldn’t be leaned on, so I’m just making do to prop you up and keep you warm.”
A perfect two-birds-one-stone solution.
But Zhu Niao hesitated, seemingly reluctant.
She just felt that on this bed, with Gou Yu suddenly climbing on, and herself still wearing that familiar pure white nightgown…
It was like that unspeakable dream.
Just thinking about it made her cheeks flush slightly.
But Gou Yu wouldn’t give her time to get distracted. After a brief moment of distraction, he crawled onto the bed through the gap she had opened.
“You’re really getting on?” The little bird was surprised.
“What else? I’m tired from delivering food this morning anyway. I might as well take a nap here.” Gou Yu yawned.
“Then sleep your sleep.” Zhu Niao pursed her lips, her mind a jumble of thoughts.
Maybe she was thinking about that vivid, unforgettable dream she just recalled.
Or maybe she was thinking about the question Gou Yu hadn’t directly answered—the one she just asked.
The answer might already be there, but Gou Yu probably thought it wasn’t appropriate to say it out loud. After all, Gou Yu was already tired from delivering food all morning and lying next to her, and maybe the one most tired was herself, rushing him to come back so hastily.
Thinking this, the girl turned her back and almost curled up at the edge of the bed.
Unfortunately, someone didn’t want her to curl up like that.
“If you stay so far away from me, won’t the cold air seep through the gap in between?”
A pair of large hands wrapped around Zhu Niao’s soft, slender waist from behind, pulling the little bird from the edge of the bed into a warm embrace.
“Little bird.” Gou Yu’s chin rested on Zhu Niao’s shoulder, his burning body heat spreading to the chilled girl.
“What are you doing?” the little bird muttered, sulking but not breaking free from Gou Yu’s embrace.
“I’ll never find you troublesome, never.” Gou Yu said, “If there’s only one person in this world who can fully accept my kindness, it’s you, and only you.”
“Little bird, you deserve all the kindness in the world.”
