Aililan was in trouble!
If Fina Nisi hadn’t found a rival, Aililan wouldn’t have been so at ease for the past six months. But it seemed the days ahead were going to be a struggle.
It was a battle between two powerhouses.
It did not cause much commotion in the city. Such events could only be sensed by high-level warriors and mages, but they wouldn’t bother such experts.
As long as civilians weren’t affected, it was allowed to pass.
However, there were still some repercussions.
Specifically, as the Vice-captain of the Chastity Knights, Briana Tell had essentially stepped on someone’s face before leaving. This matter could be serious enough to implicate her family in the Holy Land.
Even if they weren’t executed, they would at least lose their positions.
But the brilliance of the situation lay in the fact that when Briana Tell left, she had someone sell off Atester’s properties. Roughly 50,000 gold coins were handed over to the Church.
After passing through a few hands, the money ended up in Aililan’s pocket, and she suppressed the matter.
As for comforting Fina Nisi? Aililan could only say, ‘Comfort her? Why would I comfort someone who’s constantly plotting against me?’
Regarding the Vice-captain position, Aililan appointed Renata to the role.
The entire Chastity Knights had no objections to this. Renata’s ability and prestige were more than sufficient.
Renata’s face was flushed with excitement. She knew that following Aililan was the right move. In less than six months, she had already become the Vice-captain.
However, she quickly calmed down and asked, “Now that the Squad Leader position is vacant, what are your thoughts?”
Aililan glanced at her and interrupted, “Let that boy Arkernard take over as acting leader. Go tell him that it’s fine if his strength isn’t up to par for now, but he must possess capability.”
Following this round of personnel adjustments, the most excited ones were the twelve knights who had originally followed Aililan and developed within the gang.
Among the Twelve Knights, one was now an acting Squad Leader, and two were deputy leaders. For the rest of them, according to Aililan’s intentions, they would be given priority for any future vacancies.
This wasn’t just a promise. It was for the benefit of those below them, telling them that there was a bright future in following Aililan.
In the afternoon, Arkernard changed into the heavy armor that only a Squad Leader could wear. With a beaming face, he hurried to Aililan. “Lady Saintess, you summoned me?”
Aililan nodded slightly and gestured to the side.
Seven or eight thick books from the military academy were stacked on the table in front of her.
“Lady Saintess, this is…”
“Those are books from the military academy. Take them and read them.”
“Uh, you want me to read?”
“What, is there a problem?”
“No, no problem at all!”
“Very well. For the next period of time, you will go to Legion Commander Gareyas to learn how to lead troops in battle. After that, I will send you to the Demon Lands to perform a mission. If you do well enough, I will officially promote you to Squad Leader.”
“I obey your command, Lady Saintess.”
Arkernard arrived with joy but left somewhat dazed, carrying the stack of books back.
He still couldn’t quite grasp Aililan’s intentions. As a member of the Chastity Knights, shouldn’t strength be the most important thing? Why was the Saintess making him read so many books?
He didn’t quite understand.
After returning to the Chastity Knights’ station and finishing his handover work, he approached Milisanel, who was also a Squad Leader, to ask, “Lady Milisanel, why do you think the Saintess isn’t urging me to practice my cultivation but is making me read all these books instead?”
Milisanel showed a hint of a smile and sighed. “Aren’t you usually quite clever? How can you be so dense at a critical moment?”
Arkernard blinked. “Huh?”
Milisanel continued, “I don’t mean to look down on you, but let me ask you: in your entire life, do you think your strength can ever reach the level of Vice-captain Renata?”
Arkernard shook his head. “No.”
Milisanel spread her hands. “Well, there you go. The Saintess is having you read military books so that you can be assigned to an external post in the future. If you work hard, you could easily command an army and become a Legion Commander.”
Arkernard’s eyes widened. “What?”
Milisanel rolled her eyes and continued, “What do you mean ‘what’? We are the Saintess’s close officials. These 500 Chastity Knights may just be common soldiers by her side, but if we are sent to the local regions, we would be called Knight Lords. Do you know about the Head Maid, Yarandale? If she were sent out, she could rule over a Cathedral, and her status wouldn’t be lower than a Bishop of a Mass Church.”
Arkernard’s mouth fell open, and he stammered, “Then… then what if you were sent out?”
Milisanel rolled her eyes again. “I don’t want to be sent out. It’s much better to stay by the Saintess’s side.”
Of course, what she didn’t say was that staying by the Saintess’s side meant handling affairs on her behalf. Any local Legion Commander would have to bow and scrape before an envoy sent by the Saintess.
But there was no need to tell Arkernard that. If he could grow to the point of commanding a legion, it would be a very good path for him. After all, these things depended on the individual. Some people liked being high-ranking officials in the central government, while others preferred to wield power in the provinces.
In the evening, the Saintess’s carriage headed toward the manor. However, the Saintess on the carriage seemed somewhat listless. From time to time, she peeked at the people outside the window and then dejectedly pulled her head back.
She pulled back the curtain. “Commander Fina Nisi, you don’t need to personally handle such a small matter as escorting me, do you?”
That was right. Ever since that blonde-haired girl had been defeated, Fina Nisi had been sticking to Aililan again.
“Lady Saintess must be joking. Ensuring your safety is my primary responsibility.”
Aililan was speechless. She dejectedly pulled her head back again.
“Fina Nisi, I have a mission for you. What do you think?” Aililan was trying to find a way to send her away. Having someone who was always obsessed with her chastity around made it impossible for her to be happy, let alone move freely.
She wanted to be a little wicked. But Fina Nisi wanted her virtue.
Fina Nisi smiled slightly. “The Saintess is joking again. In my eyes, no mission is more important than staying by your side to protect you.”
“Commander Fina Nisi, how can you think like that? Your awareness isn’t high enough. Contributing to the Church is the belief we should practice in this life. Personal safety is truly insignificant.”
“My awareness is you, Lady Saintess. My heart has long belonged to you. Everything I do is only in the hope that you can see my sincerity.”
“I certainly see your sincerity, but what I want to say is that personal feelings aren’t worth mentioning. Loyalty to the Church is the greatest test. Don’t you agree?”
“What you say might be right. That’s why I must stay even closer to you, so I can learn more of your wisdom. Isn’t that so?”
She was truly impossible to deal with. Aililan’s teeth itched with frustration.
“Commander Fina Nisi, I want to send you to investigate information about the Orc King’s palace. What do you think?”
“If you let me go, Lady Saintess, it won’t be an investigation. I’m afraid I would kill the Orc King myself. If a grand war breaks out then, wouldn’t your plans be ruined? Right, right, I heard the Elves are extraordinarily beautiful. Recently, I’ve been considering doing business with the Elves. Why don’t you go there and look at the beauties?”
“No matter how beautiful an Elf is, can they compare to your beauty?”
‘Blonde-haired girl, get lost!’
Aililan: o口o.
