Lin Shu had originally planned to go to the royal city to find the Sacred Church. Now that they had come to her, it was a good chance to gather some information.
And also…
Lin Shu’s gaze fell on Furina.
If possible, besides money, she also wanted to find a suitable place for Furina, somewhere far from danger.
“I definitely still need to go to the royal city. I wanted to go early to check things out. If you’re not going, will you wait for me at the inn?”
Furina was silent for a moment, then nodded.
…
Following the nun who had invited her, Lin Shu arrived at the church in the city center.
The church was tall and magnificent, its stained glass windows depicting various patterns. Although it was morning, there weren’t many people attending the service.
Stepping into the church, Lin Shu smelled the incense mixed with candle wax, which made her relax quickly.
“Miss Lin Shu, this way, please.”
The angel nun led her to a seat at the back of the chapel. “Please wait here for a moment. The bishop will be with you shortly.”
After the nun left, Lin Shu looked around.
Unlike the architecture of the Demonic Race, this place had a much stronger religious atmosphere—bright, sacred, with sunlight spilling into every corner.
But there was no emblem of the Creator God on the central wall of the church.
That’s strange.
Lin Shu sat in the seat for a while. The empty church was exceptionally quiet, even the footsteps of the occasional passing nun were extremely light.
She stood up, planning to wander around a bit.
As soon as she stood, several angel nuns not far away glanced at her, whispering to each other, but they didn’t stop her.
Lin Shu walked towards the angel stone sculpture directly ahead and stopped.
Below the statue, an egg was quietly placed.
Its shell was pure white, with even golden patterns on the surface, looking incredibly luxurious.
Do they have Easter here too?
Lin Shu internally complained. At that moment, sunlight slanted onto the eggshell, and the egg suddenly trembled.
Crack.
A fissure appeared on the shell.
“Um…” Lin Shu turned her head and pointed at the egg. “It’s cracking.”
Several angel nuns immediately turned their heads and hurried over.
“Apologies, Miss Human, please step back a little.”
Just then, an unfamiliar female voice came from behind.
“You’ve been waiting. You must be Miss Lin Shu?” Lin Shu turned around to see a tall woman standing behind her.
She wore a pure white, intricate gown, and a sacred halo floated above her head.
The woman’s face was mature, with a small mole at the corner of her mouth that lifted with her smile.
The angel nuns beside them instantly stood straight, bowing to her in unison.
“Bishop.”
Lin Shu nodded. “Hello.”
The angel nun from behind introduced her. “This is Bishop Fiona, the person in charge of this church.”
The nuns glanced at Lin Shu, then looked tentatively at Fiona. “Bishop, the new child is about to be born, she…”
Fiona smiled. “It’s fine. Let this child observe.”
With permission granted, the angels no longer minded Lin Shu’s presence.
They gathered around the egg, their wings behind them slightly unfurled, their hands clasped together in a posture of prayer.
The crack on the eggshell grew larger and larger. The entire upper half of the shell broke open, revealing an opening.
A white creature poked its head out. From the head, it looked like a very small human baby, but its body was covered in fine downy hair and was stained with a clear, sticky fluid.
An… angel?
Is this how the Angel Race is born?
This scene… looks a bit familiar.
“Life is amazing, isn’t it?” Fiona’s voice interrupted Lin Shu’s thoughts.
“Alright, that little interlude is over. Come with me, let’s talk in the prayer room.” She gathered the hem of her long skirt and walked straight towards the corridor at the back of the church.
Lin Shu let out a soft breath and followed.
Since I’m already here, I might as well hear what she wants.
Lin Shu mentally steeled herself.
I do have work experience with two major Blood Clan families, after all. I can handle a proper occasion.
The prayer room was much smaller than the chapel, simply furnished.
Fiona sat down in the main seat.
“Miss Lin Shu, I heard you came from out of town?”
“Yes.”
“How do you find the cities near the center of the Sacred Race?” Fiona maintained her smile, her tone relaxed.
Lin Shu recalled her experiences along the way.
The closer she got to the center of the nation, the more humans she saw. They ran various shops, but the industries they could engage in were limited.
However, the bulletin boards were plastered with quests, almost all posted by humans. Although the rewards were generous, no one ever took them.
Lin Shu chose her words carefully. “It’s very peaceful. At least within the cities, everyone performs their own duties.”
“Do you know why I invited you here?”
“The nun said it was to commend those who completed quests and contributed to public order?”
Fiona chuckled. “Hehe, not entirely.”
“People like you, who make a living by taking on quests, haven’t appeared for a long time.”
Lin Shu blinked in confusion.
No wonder so many quests go unaccepted. But where did all those people go?
Were they recruited in advance?
“The border zones and wilderness are filled with wandering Demonic Race. The areas under the Sacred Race’s jurisdiction will become a sanctuary and home for all Sacred Race members, including humans.”
“Before that can happen, the Sacred Race needs a unified voice.”
Her eyes darkened slightly.
“The Sacred Church is currently establishing a Demon Hunting Corps. But if there are capable individuals among the populace helping to solve troubles, wouldn’t everyone’s attention be divided?”
Lin Shu digested her words. “You want me to stop taking quests?”
“Let’s not put it that way.” She smiled. “I invited you here, of course, to thank you.”
“However, some things are better left to professionals.”
“We’d like to hear your opinion. If you’re willing to join us, that would naturally be best.”
“If you decline, if you have any difficulties with making a living, or other wishes, we can help resolve them.”
Lin Shu calculated in her heart.
I wasn’t planning to continue taking quests anyway. My main goals here are to inquire about the Creator God and a place for Furina.
“Breeding?”
“Yes, as I said,” Fiona’s tone was profound, “Life is amazing. It can evolve on its own, but it can also be interfered with.”
Lin Shu’s heart pounded.
“Don’t be nervous, Miss Lin Shu. Your requests are no problem. I hope you can keep our agreement.” Fiona stroked the head of the white lizard and stood up.
“If you truly wish to go to the Creator God’s church, go to the royal city and find my elder sister. I’ll have a nun give you the information you want.”
“However, the royal city is different from other small towns. It’s better not to be too curious about some things.”
