Perhaps it was because of that sentence that she changed her mind.
The girl, who had just been about to let go, gripped the bride’s clothes tightly again.
Even the bride stared at me in a daze.
“Uh…”
I instantly regretted saying so much, wishing I could slap myself a few times.
What the hell was I doing, stirring up trouble?
If this rich young man blamed me for ruining the wedding and turned his anger on me, I’d be in deep trouble.
Sure enough, after I said those words, a burst of unrestrained laughter came from the young man’s direction: “Hahaha!”
The man’s refined face twisted into a strange smile.
He clapped his hands and said, “Not bad, not bad. For a brat’s opinion, it’s quite interesting—though also quite irritating.”
“Hmph… the feeling of displeasure is mutual,” I said coldly, though my body honestly retreated behind the crowd.
“This guy acts all cocky but naturally hides behind others, huh,” the girl’s brother remarked, mocking my retreat.
The groom stepped forward, brushing past the bride and stopping in front of the girl.
He looked down at her with a cold smirk and said, “Well, never mind that brat. As for you, little girl, I’ve heard all sorts of rumors about you. You’re that famously strange kid, aren’t you?”
“That naive brat who’s always talking about changing the world with weird ideas—has she finally stooped to doing something as uncouth as crashing a wedding?”
At this point, the groom lowered his head further, staring directly into the girl’s eyes.
“That’s disgusting…”
“!”
“Your so-called dreams are disgusting!”
As soon as the words left his mouth, the girl’s small frame trembled, and her hands, which were gripping the bride’s clothes, shook as well.
She struggled to suppress the anger in her heart… and the fear.
The bride, still facing away from the girl, showed no reaction.
“It’s not strange for kids to be playful, and the right to dream wildly belongs only to children. But it’s an adult’s duty to dissuade kids from their delusional goals. This world isn’t naive enough to be changed by a brat’s fantasies!! Your nonsensical, foolish ideas—give them up…”
Slap!
A crisp sound rang out, interrupting the groom’s words.
Unexpected, yet somehow expected.
The girl raised her small hand and, with all her strength, struck that hateful face.
“The foolish ones… are you all, aren’t they?”
After a moment of silence, the girl lifted her head, her bright blue eyes glistening with tears.
Though the tears on her face made her look fragile, her tone was remarkably defiant.
“I won’t submit to you foolish, vulgar people! Nor will I sink into this kind of world! So I will never give up, never!”
“You bastard!”
Perhaps humiliated by being slapped in public, or perhaps enraged by the girl’s stubbornness, the groom’s eyes blazed with anger.
He raised his hand, aiming to strike the girl who stood her ground, staring back at him without flinching.
At that moment, the groom suddenly heard the shocked cries of the servants behind him, followed by a dizzying sensation.
When he came to his senses, he was already on the ground.
The bride, who was supposed to become his wife, now stood over him, staring down with a chilling gaze through her hair, sending a shiver through his entire body.
“You… you…” The groom was stunned by this sudden turn of events.
He couldn’t fathom how this woman, known as the “Lady of the Lake” for her gentle and virtuous nature, could suddenly transform into this.
“Shut up with your incessant yammering…”
The bride yanked the hairpin from her head, and her blue hair cascaded down like a lake.
She shook her long hair, which reached her legs, then placed one hand on her hip, tilting her head to glare at the servants behind her who were about to intervene.
An invisible aura instantly forced everyone, including me, to step back involuntarily.
We exchanged glances, but no one dared to step forward.
In that moment, the aura this woman exuded… was murderous.
“Hmph…”
The bride gave a cold laugh, stepping on the groom’s chest and pulling the girl into her arms, gently stroking her head.
She cast another chilling glance down at the groom, like a ruthless wolf eyeing a pitiful sheep already caught in its grasp.
Then, in a cold, calm tone, she declared:
“This lady… isn’t getting married!”
The bride’s voice echoed through the scene.
While I was stunned by the bride’s sudden overwhelming presence, my heart was racing with a mix of emotions—far beyond just shock.
How did the gentle, wife-like bride suddenly turn into such a domineering queen?!
Caught off guard by the sudden turn of events and unsure how to react, I fell into an unprecedented state of confusion.
“Not… not getting married? Hey, this isn’t a joke. If you do this, my Wei family won’t let it go…”
The groom, initially looking as if he’d seen a ghost, regained his senses and stammered incoherently.
“That’s why I said your yammering is annoying!!”
The bride, visibly irritated, scratched her hair and pressed her foot harder on his chest.
“Pfft!!”
“He’s spitting blood! Big sister, he’s spitting blood!! I don’t know how powerful the Wei family is, but that’s the Wei family’s young master! Are you sure this is okay?!”
For some reason, despite being an outsider, I was the most terrified person on the scene.
“The Wei family? Who cares about that. My most precious little sister isn’t something your filthy hands can touch!”
After saying this fiercely, the bride’s demeanor softened as she gently touched the girl’s fair cheek.
“Sister, did that jerk touch you?”
Exposed! Completely exposed!
Not only was the girl a sister-obsessed kid, but this bride was a full-on sister-obsessed maniac too!
Though, as a fellow sister enthusiast, I felt a strange sense of camaraderie…
“Sister, it’s okay,” the girl said, seemingly unfazed by her sister’s earlier outburst—or perhaps already used to it.
She showed no surprise at all.
“Let’s go, come with me.”
The bride glared, and the servants blocking the way immediately parted.
Holding her sister’s hand, she walked out slowly.
The girl’s brother, finally snapping out of his shock, followed the sisters.
With everyone gone, the scene fell quiet.
The groom hadn’t moved since the bride left.
If not for the slight twitching of his body, I’d have thought he was dead.
I walked over to the groom, still lying on the ground.
Undoubtedly, this guy irritated me to no end, inside and out… but even so, a question nagged at me, and I had to ask.
“Are you an idiot?”
No matter how foolish he was, he shouldn’t have said those vicious words to provoke the bride right after she said what she did.
“An idiot?”
The groom, eyes closed, spoke in a slightly nasal tone.
He raised his hand to cover his eyes, but it couldn’t hide the tears sliding from the corners.
“Yeah, maybe…”
“To deliberately say those things in front of the woman I love.”
He covered his eyes with his arm, his voice tinged with melancholy.
“I really am a hopeless idiot…”
“So, you really did it on purpose.”
If one were to ask why he did it, the only reason could be that he didn’t want to force Cao Zhen, who clearly didn’t love him, to marry him—and to prevent separating the sisters who didn’t want to part.
Hearing the sob in the groom’s voice, I sighed, shook my head, and turned to leave.
Following the sisters, I saw their close, happy bond.
Fully understanding why the groom had done what he did, I gave a bitter smile.
It’s better not to tell them the truth.
This was the man’s choice, made with the resolve to be hated by the one he loved.
Let’s honor that.
