โMiss Nun, weโll help you rebuild the church if itโs destroyed, but if you lose your life, thereโs no getting it back,โ one of the knights, Xiaogao, tried to reason with her.
โI appreciate your kindness. But I am a penitent nun, and I cannot afford to make another mistake. If I do, I will never be allowed to formally return to the churchโthat would be no different than dying. Please take care of Niubao for me. Iโm going to stop that dragon,โ Samimi said solemnly.
The kingdom knights were dumbfounded. They scratched their heads, at a loss, exchanging helpless glances.
This penitent nun wasnโt very old, but her stubbornness was truly something else.
Then again, people like this were often the ones who ended up in the church. It made sense.
โI wonโt go! Iโll stay right here and wait for Sister Samimi!โ Niubao refused to leave with anyone else.
โThen go hide in the church basement, okay? Iโll come back for you after I take care of the earth dragon,โ Samimi reassured him.
โPlease, Sister, reconsider,โ the knight captain tried to block her way.
โHonorable knights, please return. You all have families. Itโs more important to protect them and ensure they can escape,โ Samimi said as she passed by them.
She went straight back to her room, knelt beside her wooden bed, and pulled out a long, dust-covered box from underneath.
It was a gift from the old nun, though she had never explained what was inside.
Samimi had never opened itโuntil now. Suddenly, she had the feeling that it might help her overcome this crisis.
She opened the lid, feeling as if it weighed a thousand pounds.
Inside lay a slender, jet-black longsword, a set of leather armor designed to fit over a nunโs robe, and a dark, hooded cloak.
At the sight of this gear, memories surged through Samimiโs mind. She finally realized the old nunโs true identity.
She had been a Demon-Hunting Nun.
A battle nun trained by the church to fight demons!
Decades ago, demons had rampaged across the continent, threatening all of humanity.
In response, the Holy Church had raised many orphans to become living weapons, sending them out like cannon fodder to fight evil across the world.
Since it had been such a morally questionable practice, the church refused to acknowledge the identities or deeds of demon-hunting nuns after the war.
Not that many had survivedโmost died fighting demons.
Now, in this relatively peaceful era, demons were sealed away, and these nuns had become relics of the past.
This sword was a specialized weapon meant for slaying demonsโthe Demon-Slaying Blade.
It was long but narrow, designed to be lightweight and wielded by women with both hands.
In truth, it was more like a Japanese greatsword fitted with a Western hilt.
โEven in another world, swords and blades are treated the same?โ Samimi muttered.
She felt the weight of a bloody history settle on her shoulders.
This moment marked a turning point in her life in this other world.
If she picked up this sword and donned the gear, she would be choosing a new identity and walking a different path.
As a transmigrator, Samimi knew the so-called era of peace was just an illusionโa calm before the storm.
She needed strength. She couldnโt afford to live only for herself.
She had a home and people to protect.
Without further thought, she slipped the leather armor over her nunโs robes. It was thin, more decorative than functionalโit wouldnโt stop anything.
But that fit the image of a demon-hunting nun. Heavy armor would only get in the way when fighting demons, since theyโd kill you in a single blow no matter what you wore.
Lastly, she put on the dark cloak, pulled up the hood, and strapped the Demon-Slaying Blade to her back.
Thus, the Penitent Demon-Hunting Nun Samimi set out.
When she reached the town walls, she found that the five kingdom knights still hadnโt left.
They were stunned to see her new equipmentโbut also understood the resolve behind her decision to protect Sweet Melon Town.
โWeโre kingdom knights. Weโll fight with you,โ said the knight captain.
โYouโre a priest, Sister Samimi. Priests need teammates,โ Xiaogao added with a grin.
Their voices were as firm as hers.
โThank you, everyone. Then letโs move out,โ Samimi said, mounting her little donkey.
The six of them circled around the chapel wall of Sweet Melon Town and headed straight into the dark forest behind the town.
They crossed through the shadowy woods and found a good ambush spot on the other side.
Ahead of them stretched open plains. According to the light cavalryโs intel, the earth dragon would approach from this direction.
They lit a small campfire to drive away the cold and darkness, while keeping a vigilant eye on the horizon.
Thud, thud, thud! Thud, thud, thud!
The flames flickered. The ground trembled.
The knights quickly doused the fire, formed up, and calmed their panicked horses.
In the distance, they saw a massive figure crash across the plains, kicking up a storm of dust. Its terrifying presence sent birds and beasts fleeing from the woods.
But knights could not flee. They had to face the monster head-on.
Still, they couldnโt help but tremble. After all, it was a dragon.
โMind Like Still Water.โ
Samimi whispered an incantation, casting a field of mental focus to help everyone stay calm.
It was a personal aura spell with no added attributes, but it boosted the partyโs sanity and reduced panic.
It was originally a support spell used by her elven archer teammate to improve arrow precisionโnot very effective for others, but better than nothing.
โThe earth dragonโs coming. Get ready,โ the knight captain ordered.
They took a deep breath and moved their horses to safety before taking up positions.
The six of them quickly took cover near the forestโs edge.
Fighting a Steelback Dragon on open plains was suicidalโthe only chance of survival was in the woods, where terrain favored the human fighters.
Samimi crouched behind a large tree, feeling the vibrations in the ground and estimating the dragonโs distance.
She was calm. After all, she had once hunted even flying dragons. This one was nothing in comparison.
Though her current teammates were nowhere near the level of the four chosen heroines from the Heroโs Party, their goal wasnโt to slay the dragonโjust to drive it off.
If that was all, Samimi was confident no one would lose their life today.
RUMBLE! RUMBLE!
The Steelback Dragon charged closer, its speed increasing, crashing into the woods and toppling trees as it came.
Its pace slowed in the dense forest, its power dampened by the terrainโbut it was still a terrifying force.
And in that brief moment of hesitation, the five knights launched their ambush from all directions.
Clang!
A flash of death gleamed on the dragonโs head.
The knight captain leapt from a treetop in a bold surprise attack, plunging his sword between two of the dragonโs scales.
โBullseye!โ
It was a strike made possible by the dragon-slaying knowledge Samimi had shared before the battle.
