A person’s home feels cold and empty.
As evening deepened, the girl took off the Jade Pendant she wore close to her body and placed it on the bedside table, preparing to end a tiring day.
At that moment, the Jade Pendant suddenly spoke like a person: “Nuo, how was the first day of the new semester? Made any new friends?”
“Not really, no one worth befriending,” the girl snorted lightly. “Just a bunch of small fries.”
Bai Nuo, or Bai Xiaonuo, had only become a girl a month ago.
Before that, she lived alone in this quiet, cramped apartment building, solitary and withdrawn.
Until one night, the ancestral Jade Pendant she always wore over her heart suddenly glowed and then spoke with a female voice.
It claimed to be the Succubus Ancestor residing in the pendant, who would awaken alongside any descendant when their bloodline stirred.
So, even though Bai Xiaonuo’s family had all disappeared, the pendant remained with her… well, anyway, with the Ancestor’s help, Bai Xiaonuo completed her bloodline awakening and transformed into an adorably beautiful girl.
That day, Bai Xiaonuo stood in front of the mirror, amazed.
Her long, pale hair was as smooth and soft as silk.
Her delicate face was charmingly youthful, not matching her mature figure at all.
To sum it up in four words: childlike face, huge assets.
“Ancestor,” Bai Xiaonuo winked cutely at the mirror, “so you’re saying we’re Succubi?”
“Exactly. But if you think the word sounds too risqué, you can call us Dream Demons instead. Either way, we have psychic abilities,” the Ancestor pendant rolled off the bedside table and circled around Bai Xiaonuo, murmuring, “Amazing, just amazing, Nuo, you’re even bigger than I was back then!”
It was obvious her bloodline purity was high—truly excellent.
Bai Xiaonuo smiled faintly, “Of course.”
The Ancestor realized she was getting ahead of herself.
She knew well the Succubus bloodline seemed great but had side effects.
After all, if there were only benefits and no drawbacks, they wouldn’t be called Succubi but Sacred Succubi.
In truth, the Succubus bloodline carried a flaw that affected the bearer’s personality, usually tied to one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
The Ancestor’s sin back then was lust, which greatly influenced her until she died in bed… well, past matters need not be dwelled on.
In any case, she had a pretty good idea of what Bai Xiaonuo’s sin was.
“Nuo, there’s still a month before school starts. Don’t you think you should find a part-time job to earn some living expenses?”
“No need. After school starts, I won’t lack money. Someone will give me some—after all, I’m so cute…”
“Nuo, you’re playing video games again? Take a break, okay? School’s almost starting, why not read some books?”
“Read what books? I’m speed reading now—I’ve already previewed all the freshman courses.”
“Nuo, aren’t you going to buy a few clothes before school?”
“No need. I look cute in anything.”
Though Bai Xiaonuo spoke truthfully, the Ancestor was genuinely worried.
She had already noticed Bai Xiaonuo’s sin was pride…
The girl’s pride was as large as the circle on her chest!
The first year of university had begun, and as expected, Bai Xiaonuo hadn’t made any friends.
The Ancestor watched anxiously.
After dinner, she decided it was time for a serious family talk with Bai Xiaonuo.
“Nuo, there’s something I have to tell you. Now is the time.”
At the Ancestor’s firm insistence, Bai Xiaonuo sat upright, listening seriously.
“Originally, your awakening should have happened on your eighteenth birthday—today. But I brought it forward a month because I sensed danger near you.”
Bai Xiaonuo blinked. “What kind of danger?”
“I don’t know exactly. But think about it: if beings like Succubi exist, then certainly other strange, powerful forces exist as well,” the Ancestor lowered her voice and whispered, “A month ago, I smelled blood nearby. Worried you might be in trouble, I prematurely performed your awakening ritual.”
“But nothing happened in the end.”
Bai Xiaonuo thought over her eighteen years.
Life hadn’t been perfect but no strange incidents, no car crashes, no murders—nothing out of the ordinary.
Even after becoming a beautiful girl, her understanding of the world hadn’t deepened much.
It felt like the world was the same peaceful place it had always been, only with one more little Succubus added.
“Your mindset is wrong. The world is dangerous,” the Ancestor pendant bounced on the table, “Maybe there’s a Mystery Organization performing human experiments, or escaped murderers hiding in some corner, waiting for a dark, stormy night…”
Bai Xiaonuo giggled, “Ancestor, you sound like one of those elders who tell scary stories just to make kids behave.”
The Ancestor pendant drooped, losing all its vigor when its bluff was called, mumbling, “Not all made up… I did hear rumors once,” and other gibberish.
“That’s way too fake—danger all around, blood scents, murderers lurking,” Bai Xiaonuo whined. “I’ve lived here over ten years. If there were any suspicious people, I’d know.”
“The Auntie downstairs walks her dog every day, always sitting outside to cool off. Doesn’t do anything else… Oh, I heard her dog died, so she moved away.”
“Many neighbors moved out in the past two years. A few new people moved in here and there. I don’t know any of them, but it doesn’t matter. They’re all small fries.”
“And the tall, leggy lady next door, hmm…”
Mentioning the lady next door, Bai Xiaonuo propped her chin on her hands and gave a serious assessment:
“I’ve seen her a few times at the door. She’s really beautiful—probably not much less so than me. But this lady never leaves her apartment, hasn’t talked to anyone in years, and doesn’t seem to do anything productive. I figure she must be some useless person society doesn’t need.”
Still small fries!
The Ancestor was about to advise Bai Xiaonuo to stop talking like that in public—just in case she offended some tough person who might come teach her a harsh lesson.
But at that moment, a knock sounded at the door.
Knock knock, knock knock.
“Who is it at this hour?” Bai Xiaonuo slipped on her little white bunny slippers. “I’m coming.”
The Ancestor didn’t pay much attention, but a cold breeze slipped through the window sill, causing the Jade Pendant on the table to shiver.
The wind was cold tonight, and it carried a faint scent of blood.
Come to think of it, tonight was a dark, windy night.
“No, Nuo,” the Ancestor suddenly realized something and jumped up shouting, “Don’t open the door!”
Too late.
Bai Xiaonuo stood in the doorway, trembling slightly, making muffled “mm mm” sounds.
Someone had covered her face with a towel, which seemed to be laced with a sleeping agent.
Within seconds, the girl’s body went limp, collapsing against the person outside.
The tall, leggy lady’s beautiful yet icy face flickered faintly in the darkness, her eyes glowing a deep crimson.
Tonight, the killer was bloodthirsty.
