“Come to think of it, it’s strange. There haven’t been many Zombies around lately. Logically, there should be at least a thousand Zombies in this school, but recently we’ve hardly seen any… No wonder you didn’t encounter many on your way here. You’re quite lucky…” the guard said.
“Yeah, we really are lucky,” Lin Mo replied with a casual smile, brushing it off.
The question the guard raised had been on his mind too- where had all those Zombies gone?
Under these circumstances, the sudden appearance of those dozen or so Zombies earlier seemed particularly suspicious.
He hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but now it struck him as odd.
Why would those Zombies suddenly appear together like that?
Had they detected humans inside?
But if Zombies could sense people in this building, why weren’t more of them showing up?
A somewhat wild idea crossed Lin Mo’s mind-were those Zombies some kind of scouting party?
“No, no, that can’t be… Since when do Zombies use tactics? I must be overthinking it!”
Shaking his head, Lin Mo dismissed the absurd thought.
“By the way, what’s in those bags you’re carrying?” one of the guards suddenly asked as they continued upstairs, turning to face Lin Mo and the others.
“The bags? Nothing much, just some food…”
Zhou Kai answered without hesitation.
“Food?!”
The guards’ eyes instantly lit up.
In this apocalyptic world, food was the most scarce resource.
“Yeah, why?” the boy following Lin Mo asked.
“You’re new, so you wouldn’t know. Here, all food has to be handed over.”
“What?”
Zhou Kai exclaimed.
“We have to give up our food? Why?”
“For better management. If everyone keeps their own supplies, they’ll likely run out in a few days. So we collect everything and distribute it evenly to make it last as long as possible.”
Lin Mo frowned but said nothing, tossing his backpack over.
“Here.”
Seeing Lin Mo comply, the other three reluctantly handed over their food as well.
The two guards exchanged glances, and one of them said, “You stay here. I’ll take this upstairs.”
“Fine,” the other nodded, then turned to Lin Mo’s group.
“You can wait on the fourth floor for now. Don’t worry, there are plenty of people here, including dedicated fighters. It’s very safe…”
Lin Mo didn’t respond, simply turning to leave.
Something felt off, but he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what.
When they reached the fourth floor, Lin Mo saw that every classroom was packed with people.
Some sat at desks, others lay across them, and a few stood by the windows, staring blankly outside…
But one thing was consistent-they were all silent, their faces expressionless, lost.
Most were girls, with a few frail-looking boys among them.
Even without the appearance of zombies, the apocalyptic atmosphere was already tormenting everyone’s nerves.
At a glance, Lin Mo could tell most of these people were either mentally broken from being unable to accept the coming apocalypse, or had completely fallen into despair and lost the will to live.
If not for fear, they would probably have committed suicide by now.
Of course, there were still some holding out hope for government rescue.
Speaking of which, two or three days had passed since the apocalypse began, yet there was no sign of government action.
Or perhaps there was, but with the collapse of networks and communications, they simply couldn’t know.
Either way, it didn’t matter to Lin Mo.
Rather than pinning hopes on some vague rescue, he now preferred self-reliance, placing more trust in the Reincarnation System and depending on his own strength to survive.
Without bothering with these people-it would be pointless anyway-Lin Mo headed downstairs.
He urgently needed to find someone to learn more about this settlement, and that girl named Song Xue’er seemed like the perfect person to ask.
