“At the very beginning of our research, our idea was in vitro fertilization. After combining cells from the mothers, we would implant them into one of their bodies to nurture new life.”
“Later, we found that this path was somewhat unfeasible. The constitution of Magical Girls is very different from that of ordinary humans, and we needed a new method to break through this difficult problem.”
“And then, there’s what you see now, Miss Dark Moth,” the green-haired girl in a white lab coat explained as she pointed to a transparent container in the experiment lab.
She was the Full Bloom-Class Magical Girl leading this project.
Her magical abilities were oriented toward support and healing, and her own combat capabilities were not very strong.
However, with her presence, other Magical Girls could fight without any worries. After all, the sense of security provided by a highly skilled healer was very high.
When she had no combat missions, she devoted all her energy to this project.
After many years of hard work, she had finally caught a glimpse of success.
Inside the current container, a tiny cell, invisible to the naked eye, was slowly dividing.
If no accidents occurred, it would develop into a normal baby within a few months.
“But there is still one problem that is difficult to solve. Miss Dark Moth, do you see this container?”
“Yes. It’s filled with a high concentration of Magic Power, isn’t it?”
“That’s right. We’ve discovered that embryos produced by the union of two Magical Girls require a massive supply of Magic Power to grow. The amount of magic needed is enough to drain most of the mother’s Magic Power.”
In other words, if a Magical Girl were to carry and give birth to the child herself, her fighting strength would essentially disappear during the pregnancy.
It was even possible that the mother’s body would be unable to sustain the child’s consumption.
“According to our predictions, such a child would inherit the mothers’ talents and possess the innate ability to use magic, but… the consumption is ultimately an issue we cannot bypass.” The Mentor sighed.
“We can only adopt this method of in vitro maturation, but this method clearly cannot be popularized.”
Just because it could be done in an experiment lab did not mean it could be done outside. This was a very realistic problem.
“But since we’ve already taken the first step, we just need to move forward bit by bit. One day, we will be able to reach the finish line of success.”
Luo Shuangyue felt that the current results were already quite good. At least they could see the hope of success, couldn’t they?
She looked closely at the container. Her pupils constricted slightly as the vibrant little cell happily absorbed the surrounding Magic Power to make itself stronger.
“By the way, this is a bit like being oviparous,” Luo Shuangyue whispered.
“Yes, that is also one direction of our research. If nothing goes wrong, this direction should be the correct one.” The Mentor nodded.
The two methods of reproduction, viviparous and oviparous, each had their own advantages and disadvantages.
However, in this situation, laying an egg seemed to be more advantageous than giving birth directly.
“This container is effectively an egg. Two mothers send their Magic Power and genes into the egg together, allowing their child to be nurtured inside.”
“They would deliver Magic Power into the egg on time every day, watching the egg grow day by day, until finally, their child hatches from the shell.”
“This is our ideal vision, though I don’t know exactly how long it will take to achieve this goal.”
Thinking about that scenario, Luo Shuangyue felt it had some merit. At least it made the act of having a child less complicated and painful.
“Perhaps the previous preparations could be simplified into a Magic Ritual?” she asked.
“Exactly. But the simplification process must at least wait until this child is successfully born. We have to achieve success first before we can think about other things.” The Mentor nodded.
In the end, they would certainly simplify the entire process into a Magic Ritual.
Ideally, everyone should be able to learn and master it, yet it should be more cumbersome than ordinary magic, so that girls who want to have offspring can deeply experience what this magic truly means.
So as not to create a life too casually…
Luo Shuangyue was very interested in this project. Every few days, she would visit this research facility to see the growth of the first experimental child.
The first few times, she came alone. Later, Xia Mo followed her out of curiosity.
Watching the growing embryo in the container, Luo Shuangyue felt that this time, the Mentor and her team might truly succeed.
“The situation this time is much better than in previous attempts, but… I cannot completely guarantee that the experiment will be successful.” A happy smile played on the Mentor’s face, yet she was not blindly optimistic, thinking everything was already under control.
The early stages of previous experiments had also gone smoothly, but various accidents eventually occurred, causing the child in the container to fail to be born.
Hopefully, the result this time would not be disappointing.
As the days passed, the child in the container gradually took on a human form. Everything was moving in a favorable direction.
A few months later, when Luo Shuangyue visited the Mentor again, she heard good news.
“This child is already capable of surviving outside of this container!” the Mentor said to Luo Shuangyue excitedly.
Being able to survive outside the container meant that the child would be a normal human when she grew up — no, her race should be a Magical Girl.
Humans and Magical Girls should be considered two different species. Aside from their similar appearance, the other differences were simply too great.
“We expect that in another month, we’ll be able to bring her out of there!”
“That’s wonderful. By the way, which two Mentors does this child belong to?” Luo Shuangyue marveled, then asked a question she had been holding back.
Since this child was the fruit of love between two Magical Girls, which two Magical Girls were her mothers?
Then she saw the Mentor before her give an embarrassed, faint smile.
‘I see. It’s your child, isn’t it?’
“I couldn’t exactly use someone else’s. Besides, the probability of experimental failure is high, so it’s better for me to bear all of this myself.” The Mentor smiled.
No one knew how many times hope and despair had been behind this technology as it was developed piece by piece.
Luo Shuangyue couldn’t guess how many times the Mentor had tried before achieving the current success. In all likelihood, it must have been many.
“Fortunately, hope is right before our eyes. This path is viable. In the future, we Magical Girls will be able to have our own children!” Clenching her fists, the Mentor’s eyes sparkled.
This was the hope for the future — the hope for the revival of humanity!
