——Ssshlip.
Kane’s foot suddenly slipped uncontrollably, and he did a perfect front split.
Clutching the wide-open door with both hands, he turned back, utterly bewildered, his voice rising uncontrollably as he asked again:
“How did my status get restored just like that? Wait, is it even possible for a Noble’s status to be restored?”
He had never heard of such a thing before.
“If it can be revoked, naturally it can be restored. Besides, before you, there wasn’t any precedent for revoking the Duke’s Son title either.”
Seth raised her brows in surprise. “You didn’t know? Oh, right, you spent last night running around with the Hero upholding justice. Mot’s letter didn’t arrive at your house until this morning.”
“In short, your charges have been cleared. After the higher-ups investigated, you were found innocent, and now your status as the Duke’s Son has been restored.”
“Happy now, my dear nephew? Next month, you’ll be able to return to the Capital to attend school and enjoy your youth again!”
Enjoy my youth, my ass!
I worked so hard to get rid of all those Curse of Death Flags.
Now you’re throwing them all back at me.
Are you hoping I die sooner or something?
You really are my dear aunt…
Kane forced down his urge to break down, gritting his teeth as he pressed on:
“No, but how could my name be cleared like this? Who helped clear my name?”
“I’m not too sure on the specifics, only that Her Highness the Princess put in a lot of effort.” Seth rubbed her chin, looking envious. “You really are lucky, you know. Even after being Exiled to the Borderlands, you managed to overturn your case and become a Noble again. Looking through all of Noble History, you’re the only one.”
“But then, you’re also the only one who’s ever been falsely accused and Exiled to the Borderlands. If we didn’t help clear your name, it’d be a disgrace to us Nobles.”
“Falsely accused, my foot! Who would dare frame me?!” Kane immediately denied it, his emotions flaring up. “And what’s this about the Princess making efforts? Which Princess?”
“Of course, it’s your fiancée, Princess Vanessa. Who else could it be?” Seth looked at him as if he were an idiot.
Seriously, besides Princess Vanessa, which Princess would even bother to interact with you? Don’t you have any self-awareness at all?
“So by your logic, I really did all those things?” Seth pressed.
“Well, obviously.”
“Oh, so you really are a scumbag.”
“That’s not important.” Kane waved his hand dismissively and pressed on, “But why would Vanessa go out of her way to help clear my name?”
Seth didn’t answer that question, as if she hadn’t heard it at all.
Or maybe she did, but just didn’t want to explain. Instead, she seemed genuinely pleased that Kane could experience such ups and downs at a young age:
“Turning black into white—Mot’s got some skills, that father of yours. Nephew, you really lucked out with a dad like him.”
“……”
Kane’s cheek twitched, and he wished he could just commit seppuku on the spot.
No matter how much he calculated, he never imagined his Borderlands farming life would end up being just a one-month trial.
Other people’s sons dig pits for their fathers, but when it came to Kane, it was the other way around.
What a damn curse.
With a haggard face and unsteady steps, Kane slumped back into his chair. After that, whatever his dear aunt said, he barely heard a word. In the end, he only caught that he should get some good rest here for a while, and that they’d handle the matter of finding Enya.
Given the situation, Kane could only choose to stay for now.
Since Enya had escaped, she’d definitely be hunting him down.
Rather than running around outside, it was safer to stay put.
No matter what, this was a Noble Residence, guarded by heavy troops on every level. No matter how formidable Enya was, she couldn’t just barge in.
“By the way, how’s Ta… the Hero doing?” Kane asked weakly.
After all, Taliya was injured because of him.
Sure, Kane was a villain, and yes, he wanted to get rid of Taliya’s entanglement, but he wasn’t a heartless jerk.
After all she’d done to help him, he couldn’t just walk away without a word.
“Oho, so you really do care about her.” Seth pursed her lips into an M shape, nudging him playfully with her elbow. “Not only do you have a Princess as your fiancée, but also such a loyal and pretty little maid. Now you’re still pining for another woman? You really are a greedy bad man. Careful, if you mess with too many women, they might gang up on you and split you apart~.”
“…….”
Kane’s face was cold, and he clicked his tongue almost imperceptibly, thinking to himself, If that really happens, I’ll make sure you’re the first to take the fall.
Seth didn’t notice Kane’s disdain at all and kept going:
“Don’t worry about the Hero. Though she looked badly hurt, it was all just superficial wounds. Besides, the Hero’s Self-Healing is really strong. She’ll be up and lively again in just a few days.”
“And she didn’t get infected or sick, either.”
“You two really are lucky, you know? You both got hit at such close range and still came out fine. Looks like this so-called Plague these lunatics made isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”
When Kane heard that Taliya was fine, he finally let out a sigh of relief. But when he heard Seth belittle the Plague, his expression turned serious as he immediately warned:
“You can’t say that. The Tower of Truth are all lunatics. There’s no way they’d use some half-baked product to fool people. The Hero is different from ordinary people. We can’t use her as the standard to judge everyone else.”
“That’s true.”
Seth nodded in agreement, arms crossed.
Suddenly, her brow furrowed, and she looked at Kane warily.
“Wait, I get why the Hero’s fine, but why are you okay too?”
“?!”
—Yeah, why am I fine?
Kane only now realized the problem. He was supposed to be a doomed, cannon-fodder scumbag. He didn’t have Taliya’s heaven-defying luck or protagonist aura.
Even if Taliya shielded him from most of the damage, a virus and an explosion were two different things. There was no reason he should have gotten off completely unscathed.
“Maybe the virus is still incubating?” Kane wondered.
“That’s possible.”
Seth nodded, but quickly added,
“But I don’t think it’s likely. The ones who checked you over were the Church’s top Priests. They shouldn’t have made a mistake.”
“Then how do you explain me being okay?”
Kane just couldn’t figure it out.
Seth thought for a moment, then suddenly had a flash of insight. She jabbed a finger at Kane and declared:
“Don’t tell me you’re actually the Immortal Demon King reincarnated?! That’s why you can’t die! Monster, I knew you weren’t human—hurry up and show your true form!”
“…Hahaha, what a hilarious joke.”
Kane rolled his eyes in exasperation.
The Immortal Demon King was a woman. Male-to-female reincarnation was common enough, but female to male? That’s just gross. Don’t write that kind of thing and ruin the story.
This isn’t some BL forum.
Even though Kane firmly believed that…
But if it really was because of the Immortal Demon King… maybe it actually was possible.
Kane lifted his hand to touch his neck… Not long ago, the Immortal Demon King’s hand had emerged from right here…
If he had to say, Kane really couldn’t deny he was connected to the Immortal Demon King now.
Could that really be why he was unharmed?
