“You can’t tell me?” Seeing Tang Cheng hesitate, Tang Wanyue’s eyes dimmed slightly. She still didn’t know the name of the person who had saved her life.
“It’s not that I can’t… it’s just…” Tang Cheng’s face turned slightly red, clearly torn. If Tang Wanyue had really read the love letter he left her back then, then telling her his name now would basically be a real confession, wouldn’t it?
Not only would it be incredibly awkward—it might even scare her off completely…
“Just what?” Tang Wanyue asked, confused. Still, she didn’t dare look directly at Tang Cheng’s decaying left cheek. Every time she glanced at it, she couldn’t help but recall the sight of those two classmates who had had their throats torn out by zombies. The memory made her instinctively shrink back in fear.
Tang Cheng instantly noticed the fear in her gaze. A flicker of sorrow passed through his eyes. He quickly tried to change the subject. “W-Wait here, I’ll go find you some clothes. Your uniform’s a bit torn…”
“Ah—no! That’s not necessary. There’s no need to risk your life for me…” Tang Wanyue’s cheeks flushed pink as she tried to cover the exposed parts of her school uniform with both hands. The jacket Tang Cheng had given her earlier was draped over her shoulders now, but it didn’t hide everything.
“Um… you forgot to take back your jacket…” she said, her voice shy as she reached up to remove it.
“No need to return it. Just keep it!” Tang Cheng quickly turned his gaze away, flustered. The edges of her torn white blouse revealed glimpses of pale, soft skin, and the curve of her full chest was hard to ignore. If she really did take the jacket off now… he wasn’t sure he could stay in control.
He may be a zombie now, but he wasn’t a beast. Still, he couldn’t guarantee that the virus inside him wouldn’t react to such temptation and go berserk. That would be very bad.
…Although, this did prove that some of his human instincts were still intact.
And to be clear—he meant his rationality, not anything else. Don’t get the wrong idea.
“O-Okay… Then… thank you, classmate.” Tang Wanyue lowered her eyes, her voice soft with embarrassment. She stopped trying to remove the jacket, clearly sensing Tang Cheng’s gentlemanly restraint.
“Ahem…” Tang Cheng gave a nervous cough and then tried to keep his tone calm. “There’s not much food left on this floor. I’ll go up to the fifth-floor supermarket and bring some more down later.”
“What? You’re going to the fifth floor? But there are zombies everywhere out there!” Tang Wanyue exclaimed in alarm.
“It’s fine. I roughly know where the zombies are. As long as I avoid them, it should be okay.”
Tang Cheng didn’t want to scare Tang Wanyue, so he chose to withhold the truth slightly—even though the area outside was crawling with zombies.
“By the way, how’s that uncle doing? Has his condition improved?”
“Mm, but not much… The IV fluids are almost gone too…”
Tang Wanyue answered with some hesitation. In truth, she didn’t want Tang Cheng to take any more risks just for medicine or food. She believed that him retrieving medicine from the fifth floor last time had already been nothing short of a miracle.
“Then I’ll go get more medicine,” Tang Cheng replied calmly, without a trace of hesitation.
“You’re really going again? Even after what we did to you… Why are you still helping us?” Worry was written all over Tang Wanyue’s face, mixed with a deep sense of guilt.
“A kind-hearted girl once saved me. So while I still have consciousness, I want to do as much good as I can—like she did.”
Tang Cheng looked at her seriously as he spoke.
“A kind-hearted girl?”
Noticing the sincerity in Tang Cheng’s gaze, Tang Wanyue was slightly dazed. It seemed that this girl was very important to him.
Curious now, she asked softly, “Can you tell me who she is?”
“No!”
Tang Cheng cut her off firmly and decisively.
“Ah?”
Tang Wanyue’s innocent eyes were instantly filled with helpless frustration.
