Chapter 8 : Even the Elite Gets Wrecked Just the Same!

Staring at the dark, cold barrel of the gun, Li Yiming stopped in his tracks.

He glanced back at the zombies chasing him.

They were dragging their heavy feet, still a fair distance away.

Once he confirmed the distance was safe, Li Yiming crouched down and began searching the soldier’s body.

He didn’t go for the M4 in the soldier’s hands.

Sure, it looked really tempting.

A 30-round mag, full-auto firepower.

On the surface, it looked like a real killer weapon in an apocalypse.

But Li Yiming knew better.

Without proper military training, there was no way he could handle a firearm like that.

Switching the safety, toggling between auto and semi-auto, pulling the trigger.

Even if he’d never fired a real gun before, he’d at least seen it done in video games.

But Li Yiming understood.

What you can do in a game and what you can pull off in real life…

Are two completely different things!

Sure, maybe he could manage to switch the safety and fire off a few shots based on what he remembered from games.

But that wouldn’t actually help much.

When it comes to killing zombies, you have to hit the head—nothing else counts.

Hitting other parts of the body does basically nothing.

And let’s not forget—the noise from gunfire?

It’ll attract a horde in no time.

In a situation like this, that M4 was no more than a loud, cumbersome club.

Tasteless to eat, but too good to throw away.

Against straggling zombies, there was no need to risk using a gun and inviting trouble.

And against a swarm?

That rifle’s firepower wouldn’t even make a dent.

Even in full-auto, 30 rounds isn’t nearly enough to thin out a zombie horde.

Taking all that into account, Li Yiming gave up on the tempting-looking M4.

Instead, what really caught his eye were the fragmentation grenades hanging on the soldier’s chest.

Now those were the real deal when facing a horde!

If surrounded by zombies, tossing one of these would be a game-changer.

Li Yiming took the three grenades from the soldier’s chest and carefully stashed them away.

Then his hand moved toward the pistol holster on the soldier’s hip.

Compared to the sexy-looking M4…

The unassuming M1911 pistol was far more practical.

Unlike the bulky rifle, this sidearm was easier to carry and hide.

He might not need to rely on long-range attacks much—but a reliable weapon was still a must.

After all, zombies weren’t his only threat.

Other survivors with guns were just as dangerous!

With that in mind, Li Yiming took the pistol as well.

After looting the body swiftly, he got back up without missing a beat.

With this new gear, his chances of successfully obtaining the antivirus serum had gone up significantly!

Even though looting had cost him a bit of time, the zombies behind him were still far enough away to not be a threat.

During the daytime, these regular zombies didn’t pose much danger to a healthy adult.

He ignored the slow-moving undead.

Li Yiming pulled out a combat knife and moved quickly toward the hospital’s outpatient building.

If he remembered correctly, the antivirus serum he needed should be located in the first-floor lobby of that building!

His hand gripped the knife tightly.

As he neared his destination, he couldn’t help but feel tense—everything had gone far too smoothly.

This was a post-apocalyptic comic world, after all.

Could it really be this easy for him to just walk in and grab the serum?

Li Yiming took a deep breath.

He was mentally prepared for the situation to take a sudden turn for the worse.

Something could be waiting for him inside that outpatient lobby.

Before he could think much more, he arrived at the building’s front entrance.

Even before stepping inside, a pungent, rotting stench hit his nose.

Enduring the foul odor, Li Yiming pushed open the main doors of the outpatient building.

And what he saw made him gasp in horror!

On either side of the lobby were piles of corpses stacked high like small mountains!

The sheer sight made cold sweat break out on Li Yiming’s forehead.

It was more shocking and grotesque than any horror movie or video game he’d ever seen.

These corpses were roughly stacked along the walls, leaving a narrow path in the middle, dyed deep red by dried blood.

That path—it looked like a straight road to hell…

This horrific scene was clearly man-made.

And most likely, it was the work of the now-wiped-out SEAL team.

Why?

Because every single one of those corpses had a single gunshot wound to the head.

Only the military, with its strict protocols, would take the time to double-tap every body to ensure no zombie got back up.

Li Yiming hadn’t expected this at all.

Not only had these guys cleared the zombies…

They’d even been cautious enough to put a bullet in each corpse’s head and neatly stack them afterward.

This completely eliminated the risk of being ambushed by any not-quite-dead zombies.

Should he say… as expected of an elite squad?

Li Yiming felt a wave of shame.

The more he realized just how professional and cautious these people had been…

The more he understood how terrifying the Tyrant must’ve been.

On his way from the hospital gate to this outpatient building, he had seen quite a few bodies from that elite squad.

And their deaths?

Each one had been more gruesome than the last.

That guy at the entrance with his jaw torn off.

Compared to the others?

He actually got off easy, relatively speaking.

Li Yiming covered his nose and mouth as he cautiously stepped into the first-floor lobby.

Beneath his boots, he felt a sticky, squishy texture.

But he didn’t let the disgusting sensation distract him.

His eyes were sharp, scanning every corner of the lobby with full alertness.

But after walking a bit farther,The entire massive hospital was eerily silent.

Li Yiming’s careful, tiptoeing footsteps sounded unnaturally loud in the oppressive stillness.

Once he reached a tactically advantageous position, Li Yiming tapped his knife against the escalator railing, deliberately making noise.

Clang, clang, clang!!

The metallic echoes rang out, reverberating through the hospital halls.

It was a long while before silence returned once again.

Li Yiming listened intently.

When no other sounds followed, he finally let out a heavy sigh of relief.

It seemed the SEAL team really had wiped this hospital clean.

Zombies are extremely sensitive to sound.

If there were any left, they would’ve responded to that clanging instantly.

With this confirmation, the heavy weight in Li Yiming’s chest eased up considerably.

He also began to move more boldly.

His pace quickened as he advanced.

Before long, he found the entrance to the basement near the elevator.

If his memory served him right.

It was down there that SEAL Team Six encountered the ambush.

The Tyrant had appeared suddenly, wiping out nearly half of their squad.

The remaining members fled in panic to the plaza outside the outpatient building.

And the antivirus serum?

It had been left behind in the basement!
