My younger brother did not say a single word in the place where the shadow and the witch were.

The witch left, saying she was going back to the villa to look after the young lady who was sleeping.

The shadow, feeling troubled, said he would take a short walk in the garden before coming inside.

He told me not to follow him. He said that having me around would only make him feel more disturbed.

It doesn’t look like he has given up on the deal yet.

Seeing me steal an apple, Ayla stole one too.

We ended up stealing an entire armful of apples and crawled our way into the alley.

Halfway through, we stood up and ran at full speed.

We dropped a few apples along the way, but it didn’t really matter.

There were plenty of hungry people in the back alleys.

With our stolen apples, we climbed the hill outside the village where we always went.

Then, we dumped all the apples on the ground and plopped down beside them.

Ayla looked guilty.

I picked up the ripest apple and took a big bite.

Then, I picked up another apple and handed it to Ayla.

“……It’s delicious.”

Mimicking me, Ayla took a bite and muttered.

“We’re accomplices now.”

“I have no intention of betraying you at this point.”

For a while, we just ate in silence.

The crunching sound of apples filled the air.

The city’s noise was faint in the distance, and from a faraway ranch, the sound of sheep occasionally echoed.

“Normally, you would’ve told me not to do this.

Why today?”

I asked, thinking the silence was getting too awkward.

Ayla thought for a while before answering.

“They were the ones who did wrong first.”

We laughed.

“But we took too many.”

“Let’s share them with anyone we meet on the way back.

That guy probably doesn’t even know how much we stole anyway.”

Ayla let out a laugh of disbelief.

I found myself laughing along too.

Ayla was outside.

She was leaning against the window in the hallway outside her room, gazing out.

As if living up to her name, Ayla looked beautiful in the moonlight.

Had she been watching me return?

“I thought you were asleep.”

“I just woke up for a moment.”

Ayla replied.

Then, she turned her gaze back to the window.

I stood beside her.

“……”

No matter how hard I try, I’ll never be able to return to those days.

But I don’t want to give up.

No matter how much others tell me to move on.

I simply don’t want to give up.
