To get straight to the point, I passed.
Saying it was an expected result… would be a bit of a stretch.
After the interview, I was so nervous waiting for the call.
More than anything, I was scared because I felt like I had made a reckless comment during the interview, mentioning “King of VTubers” and whatnot.
I had intended to express my ambitions seriously while also trying to lighten the mood, but I didn’t expect the reaction to be that cold.
I thought it was a given that when a newbie said something bold like that, the higher-ups would go, “Haha, what a spirited young one!” and take a liking to it. But in the end, my lack of social experience tripped me up.
Still, I got accepted, so that’s what matters! Good job, me!
The first step towards my goal—or maybe something even less than that—but it still gave me a sense of achievement.
And this little success of mine didn’t seem like it would just end with a feeling of accomplishment.
<Hidden Mission Complete!>
Hidden Mission: Pass the audition for the 3rd generation of Star Record.
You have successfully completed the hidden mission.
A reward will be granted.
“A reward…?”
It was already surprising that there was a hidden mission, but now there was even a hidden reward?
Maybe this was because I had grumbled before about there being no rewards and it being too stingy.
Well, whatever.
This was good news for me.
The long and arduous journey to becoming the world’s number one VTuber, the “King of VTubers”—I had to take advantage of every little opportunity that could help.
So, when’s the reward coming?
I hope they give it to me quickly.
Ding—
Almost as if responding to my impatience, a notification sound rang out, and a status window appeared.
Hidden Mission Clear Reward: Random Roulette!
Unique Vocal Tone
Dazzling Dance Moves
Explosive Singing Ability
Deep Sensitivity
Heightened Physical Sensation
“Oh….”
It was a little disappointing that the reward was random, but the variety of options was impressive.
The roulette spun so fast that I couldn’t even count how many abilities there were.
So, are these the talents I need to become the King of VTubers?
It did seem like most of them were related to singing and music.
But what was “Heightened Physical Sensation?”
Would it just make my body more sensitive?
It was frustrating that there were no explanations about what each ability actually did.
Some of them, like “Heightened Physical Sensation,” didn’t make sense just from their names.
There were definitely a few I wanted.
For example, “Explosive Singing Ability.”
From what I’d learned while researching VTubers, so many of them were incredibly good at singing.
My singing skills right now, objectively speaking, aren’t bad, but they’re not particularly great either.
I’d say I’m just… average.
So, since singing was one of my weak points, I really wanted an ability related to it.
But then…
Mongolian Vision
Immunity to Menstrual Pain
Hyper-Sensitive Hearing
“Stop!”
Unfortunately, my shout did nothing to stop the roulette.
Right, this was random, after all.
Please, give me something good.
I’m begging you.
And so, the roulette finally came to a stop, and the chosen ability was…
<Ability Acquired!>
Special Ability: “Sharp Intuition” obtained.
You can sense things that others cannot.
“Uh….”
What the hell is this?
The explanation was so vague it was practically useless.
“Sense things that others cannot?”
What does that even mean?
“What does this mean, Status Window?”
Even when I asked for more details, the system remained silent.
This felt like a total dud.
I’ve never had good luck with gacha, and it seemed like this life was no different.
“Ugh….”
Disappointing, but nothing I could do about it. At least I got an ability, so I might be able to use it someday.
I’ll just have to hope for another chance to get a better ability next time.
“Ah, Miss Sera! Welcome!”
“Ah, hello….”
I awkwardly lowered my head as I stepped into the building.
It was the office of Star Record, where I had recently done my interview.
Today, I was here for a pre-debut consultation and contract signing.
Along with some familiar faces from my interview, some new employees greeted me warmly.
“Is that…?”
“Isn’t that the King of VTubers guy?”
“He really went and said that….”
I couldn’t make out everything they were saying, but the words “King of VTubers” stood out loud and clear.
Looks like my words during the interview had already become a hot topic.
It really makes me wonder—why did I even say all that about becoming the King of VTubers?
But at the time, it felt like I had to say it with confidence.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I lowered my head slightly and continued walking.
“This way, please.”
Once I entered what looked like a meeting room covered in transparent glass with the staff member guiding me, I was finally able to let out a breath.
“It must be a little overwhelming, right? You’re quite famous now, Sera.”
“I’m… famous?”
I had a feeling I already knew the answer without hearing it.
“You’re the first applicant in all three generations to boldly declare their ambition to become the King of VTubers in front of the CEO.”
“Ahh….”
So basically, I had become a kind of superstar within Star Record.
I decided to look on the bright side.
At least I had left a strong impression on the CEO.
And as for the employees… Well, I wasn’t sure if it was a good impression, but at least they would remember me.
With an ultra-positive, lucky-go-happy mindset, I convinced myself that this was a win.
These were going to be my coworkers from now on, so it wasn’t a bad thing that they already knew my face and name.
“Oh, by the way, I’m Lee Hyejin, the manager for the 3rd generation. Looking forward to working with you.”
“I look forward to working with you too!”
“If you ever need anything, whether it’s about streaming or just anything in general, you can contact me anytime.”
Hyejin handed me a business card—essentially my proof of entering the working world.
This really made it feel official, like I was truly part of a company now.
After that, I signed the contract and received some general guidelines.
“There are three other members in your generation. Including you, the 3rd generation consists of four people.”
“Ohh….”
Fellow debut mates.
Since I had always streamed alone without any colleagues, just hearing that word warmed my heart a little.
Of course, I was also aware that getting my hopes up too much could lead to disappointment. Relationships are the hardest part of any job.
It’s entirely possible that we won’t get along.
Things might not be as tight-knit as I imagine, and there could even be conflicts.
If that happens, then so be it.
I’ll have to put aside camaraderie and approach it as a strictly business relationship.
But if possible, I want to maintain good relationships—not just with my fellow 3rd gen members but also with the seniors from the 1st and 2nd generations.
From my prior research, I knew that chemistry between seniors and juniors, as well as between generation mates, was a crucial factor for VTuber success.
The top-ranking VTubers that the status window had shown me all had lively, back-and-forth interactions with each other.
If I wanted to become the King of VTubers, getting along with my colleagues would be a big advantage.
Even this small detail required effort—just another reminder of how long and difficult the road to the top truly was.
“Your debut streams will all take place on the same day, but the schedule will be adjusted so the times don’t overlap.”
“I see.”
As I continued listening to the explanations, Hyejin suddenly slid something toward me.
“Could you take a look at this too?”
It was a sheet of paper filled with text.
“A celestial angel descended from heaven to cleanse the hearts of wicked humans. In an era where only rage and sorrow fill people’s hearts, she came down to Earth as an archangel to better understand humanity. Eventually, she joined Star Record to deepen her knowledge of human nature….”
Ahhh.
This familiar structure.
This familiar flavor.
“Is this… an RP?”
“That’s right, you caught on quickly.”
RP—short for “roleplay.” A fundamental concept for VTubers.
Through RP, VTubers shed their real-life identities and are reborn as entirely new beings.
Angels, demons, dragons, anthropomorphic zebras—you name it.
As long as your imagination allows it, the possibilities are endless.
But for me… hmm.
I still wasn’t entirely used to this.
I could accept the fact that I was becoming a VTuber, but suddenly being 2,000 years old or discovering I was actually an angel?
That was a bit much for me.
“Do you have professional writers for this?”
“No, not really. Since we don’t go too in-depth with the lore, we just brainstorm these among the staff. That angel RP was actually created by the CEO.”
“The CEO….”
Well, if that was how Star Record operated, I had no reason to refuse.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
“If you have an RP idea of your own, feel free to create one! Even just a short concept could serve as the foundation for your setting.”
“No, I think I’ll just choose from the ones already available.”
Even if they let me create my own, I didn’t have any particular talent for this kind of thing.
I decided to go with an RP that required the least amount of “cringe resistance” from me.
“Also, please take a look at this.”
The next thing Hyejin handed me wasn’t another setting document, but rather—
Illustrations.
A sheet filled with character designs.
The illustrations in front of me weren’t complete.
They were more like rough sketches, similar to storyboards used in movies or dramas.
Even though they weren’t colored, I could still make out details like hairstyles and general outfit designs.
I immediately knew what these were.
“These are avatars, right?”
“Yes, we wanted to make sure to get your input as the one who will be using it.”
According to Hyejin, after this selection process, they would quickly refine the design and create a fully customized avatar for me.
An original avatar…
This was yet another advantage of being a corporate VTuber—getting my own exclusive, high-quality avatar right from the start.
It might not seem like a big deal, but I knew firsthand how important it was.
From my six months of VTubing experience, I had learned that an avatar—what people saw on the screen—was crucial.
Simply changing an avatar could bring in more viewers, and that influx could lead to a stable audience.
Just like in the real world, appearances mattered.
No matter how charismatic a VTuber was, there was a limit to how far they could go with a low-quality, mass-produced avatar.
I had learned this the hard way.
After realizing how much it mattered, I had spent a significant amount of money on a high-end avatar.
But now, all of that was just a faded memory—one that stung a little.
Regardless, the avatar was an essential part of being a VTuber.
“Take your time choosing. If there’s anything you’d like to add or adjust, just let me know.”
“Hmm….”
It was understandable that I was taking my time.
No matter which design I picked, the quality was already guaranteed to be top-tier.
The real question was—which one suited me best?
As I continued to deliberate, something strange happened.
…?
A sharp tingling sensation ran through my head.
At the same time, my gaze was instinctively drawn to one particular sketch among the many avatar designs.
“Am I supposed to pick this one?”
It was a design that blended white and blue—colors similar to what I wore now.
The moment my eyes landed on it, my brain started firing off signals like crazy.
And that’s when it hit me.
“Ah, this must be the status window helping me out.”
That Intense Intuition ability I got from the roulette earlier—it seemed to be kicking in with full force.
“So, you’re telling me this is the one?”
If my instincts—or rather, the status window—were pushing this choice so strongly, then there was no need to hesitate.
“I’ll go with this one.”
And with that, my original avatar was decided.
