A vehicle bearing the insignia of the Human Alliance pulled up near the relocation house area. The girl in the driver’s seat got out, opened the rear door, and lifted out a sleeping child. She then exchanged a glance with the silver-haired girl who had stepped out from the passenger seat.
“Is it okay leaving it here?”
Yi Shiyue looked back and asked curiously.
“No problem. The Human Alliance will send someone to retrieve it.”
Ye Xingyao shrugged. Wasting a little of the Alliance’s manpower and resources was probably one of the perks of being a Midnight-level Hunter, right?
“No, I mean, won’t that let the Human Alliance pinpoint our location ahead of time?”
Yi Shiyue fell half a step behind the sister carrying her younger sibling, glancing around warily.
“Ha… that. The Alliance has probably already locked onto our identities. Any day now, they might show up at our doorstep.”
Ye Xingyao shrugged again. Since she was carefully holding her little sister, she couldn’t do her usual hands-out gesture, which felt both awkward and regrettable.
“If that’s the case, then why does the Alliance allow us to move around freely while still conducting that Comprehensive Census? Just to flush out the Elven bloodlines—do they have to go this far?”
Hearing that, Yi Shiyue grew even more confused. She had never understood much about the Alliance’s policies and decisions.
“Who knows? Maybe it’s the faction inside that’s eager to purge Elves. Don’t overthink the Human Alliance.”
As the two chatted, they arrived at their building. For some reason, a rather handsome young man was standing there, and beside him, on a vintage-style chair, sat an elderly man who looked frail with age.
After Ye Xingyao’s deliberately light words, their expressions shifted slightly. They exchanged a glance, then the old man burst into laughter. The young man rubbed his hair and joined in, looking a bit embarrassed.
Ye Xingyao stared at them in surprise. ‘Why are they laughing so hard?’
In Satellite City, old people were rare. With today’s medical technology, an ordinary human who avoided serious illness or disaster could live to 140 or 150 without any problem, and even on their deathbed, they wouldn’t look so decrepit.
‘What a strange pair.’
“Miss Ye Xin, please wait.”
Before Yi Shiyue could step forward to open the door for the sister carrying the child, the young man from the duo spoke, shocking both of them.
Ye Xingyao’s eyes went wide as she stared at them, squeezing out the last trace of Starlight Magic from her body, ready to protect her sister at a moment’s notice.
“Don’t be nervous, little miss. We just want to talk with you. Not on behalf of the Human Alliance, just on my own behalf.”
The old man explained with a smile, as if still riding the high of his earlier laughter.
The Human Alliance? Not on behalf of the Human Alliance? Then what did they want with her?
“Xiaoyue, take Xingling upstairs first. I’ll talk with them.”
Ye Xingyao steadied herself, handed the sleeping girl to Yi Shiyue, and smiled gently at her friend’s worried look.
“Don’t worry. They don’t seem hostile.”
She reached out, gently pushed Yi Shiyue’s waist toward the stairwell, and closed the hallway door behind her.
“All right, you two. What do you want to talk about? How about introducing yourselves first?”
The black-haired girl turned around, hands behind her back, leaning forward slightly—a picture of youthful energy.
“Fair enough. My name is Jiang Yuan. I’m currently a member of the Council of Elders, though without much authority. This gentleman beside me is Mr. Xing Guangyi, the former Vice-Alliance Leader of the Human Alliance.”
The young man, Jiang Yuan, took half a step back and introduced them one by one.
“…”
The revelation startled Ye Xingyao so much that her mental defenses crumbled instantly.
‘Wait, what? A Council of Elders guy brought the former Vice-Alliance Leader to my building to intercept me? Am I that important? I’m just a cute, ordinary girl…’
‘People like that only show up in news reports and Sister Hongye’s complaints…’
“Look at you, scaring the little girl.”
The old man laughed, lightening the mood by scolding the young man.
“Ye Xin… or rather, Ye Xingyao? That kid Ye Shuqiu sure raised a fine daughter.”
Soon, the topic shifted to Ye Xingyao herself.
Hearing that, she didn’t know how to respond. Ye Shuqiu was her father. The way Mr. Xing spoke, he must know him… But she had a feeling the next line would be something like, “I held you when you were a baby.”
“Haha, relax. It’s been a long time since I last saw Xiao Ye. The last I heard from him was when he told me he had a child.”
Xing Guangyi… That name sounded vaguely familiar? Not like something she’d seen in a report…
“Sir, are you my father’s teacher?”
Ye Xingyao asked hesitantly.
“Oh? So Xiao Ye mentioned me to you, did he? Good, good. But we’re not here to chat about that today.”
Mr. Xing looked delighted, which left Ye Xingyao unsure how to act in front of her father’s teacher.
“An old man likes to ramble. I’ll call you Xiao Yao. What you said earlier was right—the Human Alliance isn’t as complicated as most people think. This whole incident, those kids were too extreme.”
“The Alliance knows they mishandled things. Next, they’ll summon all Elves involved in this incident—those who haven’t taken lives or harmed ordinary people—to attend a newly established school in Satellite City for Superpower Users. What do you think, Xiao Yao?”
“Me? It doesn’t have anything to do with me…”
“Ah, not at all. No matter what, we must inform you, the Star Elf Miss, about matters concerning Elves.”
Mr. Xing raised a hand to cut off her refusal, his tone serious.
“There might even be people coming to seek your cooperation regarding this school… of course, these are still ongoing plans. I came here to ask you, as Xiao Ye’s child, as a Hunter under Miss Hongye, and as a Star Elf—what do you think of humans and Elves?”
“I…”
Ye Xingyao bowed her head, an unusual sight. Her hands tightly gripped the fabric of her pants.
