I sat on the chair, listening to their conversation in a daze. Suddenly, I remembered what the Angel had said to me earlier.
After thinking about it, I decided to tell them. After all, I couldn’t figure out anything on my own.
However, because my head was so fuzzy, I stuttered a bit.
“……So you’re saying that Agent of heaven wants to cooperate with you?”
Lu Xiu rubbed his chin so hard it looked like sparks might fly. His face was full of confusion.
“Why?”
“I… I don’t know… She just said, ‘They are all awakening,’ and something about ‘dealing with me.'”
“They? Dealing with you?”
Qu Le chimed in.
I nodded.
“Do you remember the original sentence?”
“I think so…” I began to think. “First, she called me [Supreme].”
“Wait—!!!”
Before I could finish, Qu Le interrupted me instantly. He sprang up from his seat, leaned forward with both hands on the table, and stared at me.
“What did you just say?”
“I, I think I remember…” I shrank back.
“Not that. The next part.”
“…First?”
Qu Le closed his eyes tightly, as if trying to say something. “A bit further back…”
“[Supreme]?”
“…Yes, [Supreme].” He opened his eyes and looked at Lu Xiu. The latter had been frozen in place since a moment ago.
The two of them stared at each other. Finally, Lu Xiu looked at me.
His eyes were no longer their usual dead-fish eyes but were mixed with a kind of heart-wrenching helplessness that said, ‘I knew nothing good would come of this.’
Even as slow-witted as I was, I understood that things had become serious.
“Should I say something?” Lu Xiu spoke.
“I don’t know. You can say whatever you want, as long as you don’t go around telling people I watch Wululu.”
Qu Le stood up from the table, took out a magic disc from a drawer, and then pulled an isolation gramophone from under the desk.
He placed the small magic disc on the isolation gramophone and pressed the button.
Classical and elegant music flowed out, yet the magic disc on top didn’t spin at all. It was as if the sound was appearing out of thin air.
“Alright, we’re isolated now.” Qu Le finished his task and turned back to me. “Tell us about it.”
“Tell… tell what?”
“About you being the [Supreme].”
This… how was I supposed to explain?
“I don’t know what [Supreme] is, either.”
Those were honest words.
“That makes sense. If you actually knew, you wouldn’t have blurted it out like a total simpleton.”
‘Why did he suddenly insult me?’
“Let me explain.” Lu Xiu pulled the topic back, grabbed a chair, and sat down.
“Remember when I explained the calamity to you?”
“Mm-hmm.” I nodded, even though I had almost forgotten everything by now.
“Then do you remember me saying one thing?” He looked into my eyes with a hint of seriousness. “Most seeds of calamity have an Honorific Name. For example, the [Prisoner], or [Kong Hai], or… [Supreme].”
“In other words, Sui, your true identity… is a seed of calamity.”
‘I… I’m a seed of calamity?’
“Then… am I a bad guy?”
I pointed at myself. My dizzy head was instantly jolted awake by fear.
‘It’s over! I’m actually a bad guy! But I’m a good person! Since when were good people also bad guys?’
“More than just a bad guy.” Qu Le took a deep breath. “You’re in the worst category. You’re rotten to the core.”
“But I haven’t done anything bad…”
Aside from causing trouble for Lu Xiu and eating things all over the place…
I lowered my head a bit guiltily, fiddling with my fingers.
“I finally understand why you were targeted by that demon in the first place.” After Qu Le finished speaking, he began to pace the room.
He hadn’t been idle since a moment ago, either shaking his leg or tapping the table as if he had a bad case of anxiety.
But after taking only a few steps, he suddenly stopped and then… laughed?
It started as a suppressed chuckle and eventually turned into an uncontrollable, loud laugh. The laughter echoed in the isolated room.
“You haven’t gone crazy, have you?” Lu Xiu instinctively moved his chair, terrified that whatever the other man had was contagious.
“No, no, no. I just finally figured something out!” Qu Le immediately straightened up, his face still flushed with a hint of joy after his laughter. “Remember what I said before?”
Without giving Lu Xiu time to answer, he continued, “I once made a deal with the Possibility Devil to find a possibility that could change the ending of the world.”
“Its prophecy included Sui. At first, I didn’t quite believe it, but today, I finally do. This answer is correct.”
“Because the Possibility Devil would never bet its own existence on a Four Laws Seed that could destroy everything.”
He turned his head and met Lu Xiu’s and my faces, which were both filled with “it’s hard to describe” expressions. His face couldn’t help but look embarrassed.
“Sorry… I just got a bit excited…”
Lu Xiu shook his head, and I followed suit.
“Ahem. Anyway… only we know about this, and only we can know.”
He regained his serious demeanor.
“Are you not afraid the higher-ups will find out? You’ll be a traitor to humanity then.”
Lu Xiu didn’t agree immediately but threw a question back at him instead.
Hearing this, Qu Le simply pulled a handgun from the drawer, slid it across the table toward Lu Xiu, and it stopped steadily in front of him.
He jerked his chin.
“Then you can carry out the Execution on Sui right now. I won’t interfere.”
Hearing those words, my eyes widened instantly.
“Why do you suddenly want to execute me!”
I immediately jumped off the chair and hugged Lu Xiu, preventing him from reaching for the gun.
“Lu Xiu, Lu Xiu, I don’t want to die! Don’t execute me… I still haven’t tasted strawberry cookies, taro ice cream, apple milkshakes, or the Kuyan Fire Village 3-year anniversary limited edition puru puru bobo… I don’t want to die… *waaaaaaah*…”
I wiped my snot and tears onto his white plastic bag.
“Shut up.” Lu Xiu yanked me over and stuffed me back into my seat. “Stop crying. When did I ever say I was going to execute you? You have so little courage.”
“Really?” I asked, sobbing.
“Really.”
I gradually quieted down.
“So, is your answer a refusal?” Qu Le asked.
“My sword is for protecting, not for pointing at my own companions. This is my principle.”
“You… you talk about principles, but the truth is you just can’t bear to do it. You’re just dishonest with yourself.”
Lu Xiu: “…”
Qu Le smiled, took back the gun, and opened the drawer. His gaze lingered slightly on the heavy body of the weapon.
“Lu Xiu, I have never forgotten my mission. From the moment I made the deal with the Possibility Devil, my heart has beaten for this purpose.”
“As long as the world can be saved.”
*Click—*
The drawer closed.
Locking away the secret and the witness together.
We didn’t leave the response division today. Qu Le specially approved a room for us. The reason was simple: to prevent the [Heavenly kingdom] from coming for us again.
Qu Le speculated that the [Heavenly kingdom] hadn’t grown enough to attack the response division yet; otherwise, they wouldn’t be hiding everywhere.
As for Lu Xiu’s talismans, they were reimbursed, and he was even given a few extra copper coins, though I didn’t know what they were for.
The beds were bunk beds. I was on the top, and Lu Xiu was on the bottom. I wasn’t quite used to it yet.
After all, without Lu Xiu’s scent nearby, I had a bit of insomnia.
“Lu Xiu, what do you think I should do in the future?”
I poked my head down from the top and asked.
“I don’t know.” He rested his head on his arms, shifting his gaze from the bedboard above him to my face.
“Oh.”
“Then will there be a lot of people who want to kill me?”
“Yeah.” He didn’t try to comfort me.
“I’m a little scared.”
In the darkness, his breathing went silent for a moment. Then, his voice rang out firmly.
“I will protect you. This time, I won’t break my word.”
Although I still had many, many questions I wanted to ask, I didn’t continue.
Because this was enough.
As long as Lu Xiu said he would protect me.
Then I wasn’t so afraid anymore.
“Goodnight, Lu Xiu.”
“Yeah. Goodnight… Sui.”
