Looking at Miao Miaomiao’s utterly bewildered expression, Ling Xiaoyou gave a light cough, seemingly realizing just how strange her own words must have sounded.
After all, this wasn’t about selecting the protagonist of some hot-blooded manga; it was about joining the headquarters of the Grievance Points Division.
The requirements definitely weren’t the kind she had just rattled off.
She thought for a moment and decided it would be better to just tell Miao Miaomiao honestly that she had no idea how the process worked.
Pretending to know everything and accidentally causing the girl to waste time or miss her chance to transfer to headquarters would be awful.
“Actually… meow… Miao—”
But before Ling Xiaoyou could finish, Miao Miaomiao cut in first.
She looked at Ling Xiaoyou and asked somewhat hesitantly, “Um… Senior, what if my friend only has pretty decent mental fortitude? What then?”
How would I know what to do…
You’re asking me?
Who am I supposed to ask?
Ling Xiaoyou felt helpless.
Tentatively, she replied, “Work hard to get stronger?”
“Ah, but she can’t really put in the effort…”
Hearing this, Miao Miaomiao immediately showed a troubled look.
She let out a small sigh, then—suddenly—as if she had caught the scent of something delicious, her delicate nose twitched slightly.
An intoxicated expression unconsciously appeared on her pretty face.
Then she turned to Ling Xiaoyou, eyes practically sparkling, and asked, “Senior, never mind all that for now—I think I smell something really good! It seems like dinner has started!”
“How about we go eat first and talk later?”
“Huh?”
Ling Xiaoyou was stunned.
She still hadn’t fully pulled herself out of the discussion about joining headquarters when she saw Miao Miaomiao already eagerly dashing toward the elevator.
Seeing this, Ling Xiaoyou thought for a second.
She realized she was actually a bit hungry too, so she quickly started moving her short legs to catch up.
She had to admit—this girl was seriously fast.
If Ling Xiaoyou’s current speed hadn’t already reached the level of being unmatched within the same realm, her little legs probably wouldn’t have been able to keep up with this…
Hachiko-like cat girl!
Once inside the elevator, Ling Xiaoyou stopped thinking about running and instead reflected on something from earlier on the way here.
She had come to the conclusion that since she was finally being treated like a senior for once, she should at least act the part.
So she decided that when she saw Senior Li later, she would ask on Miao Miaomiao’s behalf about how to transfer from a branch to headquarters.
But speaking of which… why exactly did this cat girl want to transfer from the branch to headquarters so badly?
As far as she remembered, the salary and benefits at the branch were the same as at headquarters, right?
Puzzled, Ling Xiaoyou glanced at Miao Miaomiao, who—while waiting for the elevator—was unconsciously bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet.
She asked, “By the way, Miaomiao, why do you want to join headquarters so much?”
After a pause, she quickly added, “If you don’t want to say, just pretend I never asked.”
“It’s Miao Miaomiao,” the girl corrected her, then continued, “There’s nothing hard to talk about. It’s just… water flows upward, you know?”
She hurriedly added, “It’s not me who wants to join—it’s a friend of mine!”
Ling Xiaoyou didn’t pay much attention to Miao Miaomiao’s sudden “friend out of nowhere.”
After thinking for a moment, she asked in confusion, “But… shouldn’t it be people strive upward, while water flows downward?”
“No, no, no. Senior, think about it—if even water can flow upward, doesn’t that just prove how determined my friend is?!”
Miao Miaomiao shook her head and argued back with complete confidence.
“Uh… well…”
Ling Xiaoyou didn’t know how to respond to that.
Fortunately, the elevator was quite fast.
With a soft ding, the doors slowly opened.
Instantly, a mouthwatering aroma rushed into Ling Xiaoyou’s nose, and she suddenly understood why the cat girl had been in such a hurry earlier.
Because…
It was time to eat!
With that thought, Ling Xiaoyou followed Miao Miaomiao into the restaurant.
She glanced around and noticed that the people coming and going didn’t seem to be spirits at all—they were living humans.
Could it be that everyone here was an exorcist?
As that idea crossed her mind, her gaze suddenly landed on a very familiar figure—one that had recently been appearing in her dreams from time to time.
Bai Shuanglian! She was here too!
Ling Xiaoyou’s face lit up with joy.
She was just about to sneak up behind Bai Shuanglian and give her a big surprise.
But the next scene made her freeze mid-step.
She saw Bai Shuanglian say something to the slightly older young woman beside her.
Then Bai Shuanglian stood up, picked up a napkin, and… gently wiped the corner of the woman’s mouth!!!
Ling Xiaoyou was completely stunned.
She couldn’t believe what her eyes were seeing.
No, no, no—how could Bai Shuanglian possibly do something so intimate like wiping someone else’s mouth?
It must be the angle. She must have seen it wrong!
Even though the angle just now had given her a perfectly clear view of both people’s actions, Ling Xiaoyou still desperately tried to convince herself that she had misseen everything.
If the situation weren’t so public right now, she might have even wanted to pop her own eyeballs out, wipe them clean, and put them back in to see if the scene would return to normal!
“Senior? What’s wrong?”
Miao Miaomiao’s voice sounded as if it were drifting down from the distant heavens.
To Ling Xiaoyou, it felt muffled, as though it had passed through several layers of gauze—distant and unreal.
“I’m fine. You go find a seat first. I’ll come find you later.”
Ling Xiaoyou forced a smile at Miao Miaomiao.
The latter didn’t notice anything strange, nodded with an “Oh,” and quickly went to grab a seat, calling a server over to bring her food.
Ling Xiaoyou only glanced once before looking away again, her gaze returning to Bai Shuanglian—and to the “seductive vixen” who had somehow appeared beside her.
The two of them had already resumed eating their dinner as if nothing had happened at all.
So… maybe I really did see it wrong earlier.
Ling Xiaoyou had just let out a small breath of relief and was about to turn toward Miao Miaomiao when, from the corner of her eye, she saw the young woman move again.
She stopped walking and stared in disbelief at the scene unfolding.
The young woman smiled lightly, picked up the spoon in front of Bai Shuanglian, scooped a generous portion from Bai Shuanglian’s plate, and brought it right to her mouth.
What shocked Ling Xiaoyou even more was that Bai Shuanglian only glanced at the spoon held to her lips, showed a helpless expression, and then obediently opened her mouth to accept it—without the slightest resistance from start to finish!
Watching the two of them feed each other and then chat and laugh happily afterward, Ling Xiaoyou lowered her small head, pressed her lips together, clenched her tiny fists, and slowly began walking toward Bai Shuanglian’s table.
