Su Mumu returned to the Blue Tile House and locked the courtyard door. She was utterly exhausted.
This outing had taken a massive mental toll. She had been on high alert the whole time and even played a game of “sisters chasing each other” with Jiang Mengxin.
‘I’m so tired…’
She was covered in sweat, but Su Mumu didn’t plan on taking a bath yet.
She had to deal with the fox ears and tail first…
With that thought, Su Mumu laid out the medicinal herbs she had bought one by one on the wooden table. Following the tutorial on her phone, she began her alchemy.
Of course, because she was poor, her pill furnace was a special bargain she had found online. It was only the size of a palm.
The pill furnace was actually quite pocket-sized and cute.
This kind of small furnace was also more suitable for beginners. The heat was easier to control, and even if it exploded, it wouldn’t be very dangerous.
Su Mumu placed the furnace on the stove by the door and lit the firewood.
Just then, her phone rang.
— You are my little, little apple~~
Su Mumu hurried to pull out her phone. Feeling a slight pleasant surprise, she answered the call.
“Hello — Xin Xin?”
“Hi, hi! I’m home!”
On the other end of the line, Jiang Mengxin’s voice sounded full of energy. It was as if all the dejection she had shown earlier was just an illusion.
“It’s so late. What were you doing?”
“I… I just finished a mission. I went to grab a late-night snack with some other students from my class.”
“Oh, how was the mission?” Su Mumu chose to pretend she didn’t know anything.
“That…” Jiang Mengxin’s voice gradually went quiet.
It became so silent that they could almost hear each other’s breathing.
Su Mumu’s expression turned slightly serious.
‘It’s okay, just cry! Cry as hard as you usually do. Complain about everything under the sun, and then come back to life with full health! My best friend!’
However, Jiang Mengxin didn’t sob. Instead, she spoke in an incredibly calm tone.
“I failed.”
It was so calm that it was eerie.
For a moment, Su Mumu didn’t know how to respond.
Jiang Mengxin continued, “The Demon King was heavily injured, and my teammates needed to resupply their ammunition. I failed to stop the Demon King, and it escaped.”
Strange. It was incredibly strange.
Su Mumu’s eyes widened slightly, and her mind was a bit of a mess.
‘That’s odd. Has my best friend already adjusted her mindset? So fast?’
“By the way, Mumu, I want to ask you something,” Jiang Mengxin said.
Su Mumu snapped back to reality. “What? Do you finally want to hear about my S18 stories?”
“Whoa, look at that bull’s tail! Quick, invest!” Jiang Mengxin screamed.
“Hahaha.”
Su Mumu laughed until tears almost came out.
*Puff, puff, puff.*
Nearby, the fire in the stove was burning vigorously, and the lid of the alchemy furnace began to float slightly.
Su Mumu thought it would probably take about 10 more minutes before she could turn off the heat.
Jiang Mengxin’s voice rang out from the phone again. “Mumu, I actually encountered something very strange tonight.”
“What was it?” Su Mumu’s mind was focused on the pills, so she responded nonchalantly.
“You might not believe me when I say this, but I encountered a fox girl!” Jiang Mengxin said.
“Cough — !” Su Mumu nearly choked on her own saliva. “I really don’t believe you.”
“I knew it.” Jiang Mengxin’s voice paused. “I swear on my 36D chest that this is the truth!”
“666, flawless,” Su Mumu teased.
“I’ll play another Flawless card!” Jiang Mengxin retorted.
“Okay, okay, this humble servant gives in,” Su Mumu said.
“Do you believe me now?” Jiang Mengxin’s tone held a hint of pride.
Su Mumu thought for a moment. “I believe you, but… are there really demons in the Changsheng immortal sect? And a fox demon in human form? A fox girl?”
“That is indeed very strange.” Jiang Mengxin pondered. “She even knew me. She called me by my name.”
“Uh, that…” Su Mumu was speechless.
“It’s really weird, right?” Jiang Mengxin’s excitement rose. “And then, that fox demon mocked me! She acted like I couldn’t catch her. I’m seriously going to die from anger!”
“Emmm…” To be honest, Su Mumu was a bit nervous now and didn’t know what to say.
“Isn’t that too much? Seriously… since I was a kid, this is the first time I’ve been mocked by a demon!” Jiang Mengxin’s tone was full of resentment.
“I think… is it possible… that it was just a student from the Xianzong playing dress-up in the middle of the night?” Su Mumu decided to try and save the situation.
“I thought so at first,” Jiang Mengxin muttered. “But that girl didn’t look human.”
“Huh?” The tail behind Su Mumu’s back snapped upright.
“Mm… how should I put it? Her features looked just like a 3D model, you know? They didn’t look like something a human could grow. She was so damn pretty. Beautiful like one of those dolls. And her skin…”
“Stop, stop, stop! Watch out or you’ll get banned!” Su Mumu quickly interrupted.
“Oh, right.” Jiang Mengxin realized her blunder. “It’s hard to admit, but there’s actually a girl in this world prettier than Mumu, even if she is a demon.”
“Is that supposed to be a compliment?” Su Mumu curled her lip. “You’re the rank one big sister of the Changsheng immortal sect school beauty ranking. Talk about a humblebrag.”
“It’s different. If the opponents are them, they’re just average,” Jiang Mengxin said in a cool tone. “But if it were you, Mumu… I would definitely lose.”
“Fine, fine. This king acknowledges it,” Su Mumu said.
Since Su Mumu had never gone to school, almost no one in the entire school knew her. The person who had put her on the ranking was Jiang Mengxin.
Jiang Mengxin had just casually uploaded a few photos of Su Mumu. In a single day, she had cracked the top ten.
However, because Su Mumu didn’t actually attend the school, the comment section below was filled with things like “Online dating scams are prohibited” and “Don’t upload fake photos.”
After the haters took control of the narrative, she naturally couldn’t continue to climb the rankings.
But Su Mumu didn’t care about these things and never paid attention to them.
“So Mumu, I have a brand new goal now!” Jiang Mengxin said.
“What is it?” Su Mumu suddenly had a very bad feeling.
“I will…” Jiang Mengxin declared with unparalleled determination, “catch that fox demon and avenge her mockery!”
‘Catch that fox demon…’
‘Catch that fox demon…’
‘Catch that fox demon…’
The words kept spinning in Su Mumu’s head.
“I admit I’m at the bottom of the class, and my credits are going to be trash! But I cannot tolerate being mocked by a demon.”
“This is a massive humiliation for my entire academic career! I must bring her to justice to prove my path!” Jiang Mengxin reaffirmed.
Su Mumu felt her best friend’s resolve. That resolve was incredibly strong.
‘But… best friend, the fox demon you want to catch is me!’
“Um, actually…” Su Mumu opened her mouth, but the words got stuck in her throat.
“What?” Jiang Mengxin asked.
“No, it’s nothing.” Su Mumu still didn’t have the courage to confess. Besides, even if she did, would Jiang Mengxin believe her?
And even if Jiang Mengxin believed her, then what? The Changsheng immortal sect definitely wouldn’t believe it. In the end, it would still lead to the worst possible outcome.
‘Anyway, I shouldn’t reveal my identity to my best friend yet.’
‘As long as I can find a way to return to human form, every problem will be solved…’
“Mumu, you’re acting weird?” Jiang Mengxin asked, puzzled. “Did your cold get worse?”
“Uh… maybe so,” Su Mumu said.
“Honestly, I’ll come see you tomorrow morning,” Jiang Mengxin said with a voice full of concern. “It’s obvious you didn’t take your cold medicine properly.”
“I’ll give it to you, too, and don’t you have classes tomorrow?” Su Mumu said hurriedly.
“It’s fine. I don’t have classes tomorrow morning. My homeroom teacher told me to go see him a bit later. It seems like there’s something going on,” Jiang Mengxin said.
“Alright…” Su Mumu’s eyelid twitched wildly.
