Hill thought to herself that she probably wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.
No, in fact, on every hunting night, she never needed sleep. After eating and drinking her fill, she only felt even more invigorated.
However, when she saw the information displayed on her personal panel, Hill was so excited that her body temperature rose several degrees. She had never possessed any remarkable talent for magic; just sensing the scattered particles of mana floating in the air was already a struggle for her.
Let alone casting spells—being able to sense mana was far from enough. The profession of Mage, or rather, the Goddess of Magic herself, harbored a serious aversion to stupidity. Illiterates, blockheads, those stubbornly clinging to old ways and refusing to adapt—such people would never become Mages.
Inscribing magic circles, chanting incantations, even creating one’s own spells…
If your mind couldn’t make the leap, don’t even think about casting magic.
After coming to this world, Hill had attended school for a few days and could clearly feel the gap between herself and the other students. Speaking of which, her apparent identity was that of the only daughter of a fallen noble family. A few years ago, her whole family had been slaughtered by an unknown monster, leaving Hill as the sole survivor, left alone in this world.
When she crossed into this body, the child had already lost her breath—it was a death by suicide.
Thanks to the blessing of the Goddess, she was revived, only now changed from mortal flesh to the body of a Vampire, transformed into a bloodthirsty creature!
Heavily influenced by the myriad web novels of her previous life, Hill didn’t see this as much of a big deal.
“She” had already been on a dead-end path, so to die and come back to life—and not as a hollow skeleton or a lifeless corpse—was already an unexpected fortune.
Hill cherished her current life greatly, so when that girl earlier volunteered to become her blood bag, she had only hesitated for a few seconds before immediately rejecting the offer.
Thinking back on it now, although she did feel a twinge of regret, if she had truly lured the girl home, she would have known no peace ever again!
Hill sat for a while on the rooftop terrace. For the moment, she still hadn’t fully come to terms with the new skill she’d just gained, and planned to wait until school tomorrow to see if her magical aptitude had really improved.
“What a pity, such delicious blood, and I only got a single taste. Tsk tsk, who would have thought that a random prey would turn out to be the Saintess of the Goddess of Light’s avatar in the mortal world!”
If not for the panel’s description, she would never have guessed.
But thinking back, the girl’s blood had indeed tasted unimaginably delicious. Even now, Hill’s taste buds couldn’t forget that exquisite flavor.
“But since she’s the avatar of the Goddess of Light in the mortal world, she should have been discovered by the Church long ago, probably become a Saintess or something. So how did she end up collapsed in some obscure alley late at night, and almost get assaulted by a drunken lout?”
Hill sighed, shaking her head. Such matters still felt far too distant for her. Not to mention the world at large—even in this small town, who knew how many hidden secrets lurked beneath the surface? The waters here ran deep!
As for her, she would continue relying on the Goddess’s grace and quietly remain a low-key little Vampire.
If one day she could reach Sequence V, then her status would be on par with a small kingdom’s monarch, and she’d no longer have to live in constant fear.
Hill’s figure darted swiftly through the night. Along the way, she saw several constables hurrying toward the spot she had just left, their lanterns swaying as they ran. Another ordinary night in the small town had been completely upended.
Taking extra precautions, Hill took many detours to avoid the constables before finally returning to her apartment.
Listening to the commotion outside, Hill calmly took off her black trench coat and hid it in the corner of her wardrobe. Then she picked out a white nightgown. In this cramped apartment, no one could catch a glimpse as the Vampire girl slowly undressed, leaving only her undergarments.
After becoming a Vampire, her skin was paler and more delicate than ever—like white jade, truly living up to the phrase “skin like congealed cream.” Especially after feeding on such high-quality blood, she now looked radiant, more effective than any luxury cosmetics used by the upper-class ladies.
Unfortunately, she’d only taken a single sip—just enough to stave off hunger for a day. Once she grew hungry again, this state would fade.
Lying on the wooden bed with only a single layer of cotton cloth, surrounded by the faint smell of rot in the air, Hill had grown mostly accustomed to it. Closing her eyes and recalling the events of the night, she couldn’t help but curve her lips in a faint smile.
She had thought the Goddess’s favor upon her had already reached its limit—who would have expected such a plain night to bring her another stroke of fortune!
After her family fell into ruin, she had been forced to move out of their mansion in the small town and into this cheap apartment. Cold in winter, hot in summer, leaky during rainstorms, a fair distance from her school, and no carriage to ferry her anymore…
All in all, it was inconvenient in every possible way.
Hill wanted money. Aside from her Vampire identity, she could have used the Goddess’s blessing to earn high status and wealth among humans. Even in another world, Hill remained an “unambitious mediocrity.”
Nobles in this world still enjoyed many privileges. Though her family was downfallen, her generation still held a title to inherit, and she was just a year away from adulthood. When the time came, the Examiner from the Kingdom of Lotis would seek her out to determine if she qualified to inherit the title.
Otherwise, the Hamilton family’s inheritance would have nothing to do with her—she’d just have to watch others swallow it up.
As for qualifications, there were two: one was assets, the other was confirmation of being an Extraordinary.
Now forced to live in this shabby apartment, Hill certainly didn’t have much money. She was only able to keep attending her school because, upon her enrollment, her still-living parents had paid the full tuition.
So passing the assets test was next to impossible, unless fortune fell from the sky and a sack of gold coins landed right on her head!
That left only the other path.
Advance to Sequence I and become an Extraordinary!
Hill had originally held no hope for this, but now the situation was completely different.
Within the next year, as long as she worked hard, perhaps she could rely on the Goddess’s bestowed skill to become a Mage!
Once she inherited her noble title, she would receive the kingdom’s stipend every month, and the mansion that had belonged to her family would be rightfully returned. She’d no longer have to live in this dilapidated place!
And with money and status, it would be so much easier to cover up anything she wanted.
As a Vampire, she’d have plenty of excuses to keep a few blood bags at home. She wouldn’t have to risk hunting at night anymore, or feed on vagrants and drunkards! In her own estate, she could even enjoy a different flavor every day!
The future was bright indeed…
With joy filling her heart, Hill closed her eyes and peacefully drifted into a dream.
