Twin Star Town wasn’t small in area, but it was still classified as a town because much of the land remained undeveloped wilderness.
Two factories in the southern part of the town kept their machines humming, yet there were no residential areas nearby.
In such a scattered place, it wasn’t easy to find skilled technicians, so Xu Chuyao simply headed straight to the municipal building.
Though called a “large building,” it was really only about three or four stories tall, and the staff and Shen Ning thought it resembled the tree demon from those documentaries.
“We’re from the main district of Center City,” Xu Chuyao said.
Not long after, the Town Warden of Twin Star Town came to greet them.
He was a middle-aged man with a gentle and kind expression, dressed plainly perhaps because of his connection to that Feng person.
Xu Chuyao introduced herself and clarified their purpose, mentioning their official business.
“Regarding the previous issues with gang management here, we came to understand the situation,” he explained a reason carefully prepared on the way.
“The local Security Department isn’t located here in the main office. I’ll take you there,” the Town Warden said cooperatively.
As they gathered their things and got ready, he led the two young women ahead.
Xu Chuyao chatted casually on the way, subtly asking about Wen Fang—how long she had worked here, whether any incidents had happened during her tenure, and how things had been handled.
“Wen Fang became Town Warden three years ago. The Security Department leadership handover doesn’t have a fixed date; it’s rather flexible, so I don’t know the exact day,” the Warden replied.
“Overall, the town’s situation has been stable these past years. After all, it was re-divided under the main city’s jurisdiction. As for management, security issues are always handled by the Security Department. I have no authority over that, nor do I pry…”
The Town Warden was cooperative and sincere, but as he himself admitted, there were many problems he really couldn’t assist with.
While they walked ahead chatting, Shen Ning munched on the snow buns she brought from school, watching the surrounding streets. It felt like a casual stroll.
“A couple of young ladies going out together—that’s a date. It’s basically a leisure outing,” Tong Ying said. “No issues there.”
The worn, languid atmosphere prompted a quote: “Outside the bamboo, peach blossoms bloom a few branches; the warm river water lets the crows know first.”
Even Tong Ying pulled a folded fan from her skirt: “Such a beautiful day and scenery, it stirs both heart and mind.”
Shen Ning wasn’t particularly fond of traveling; she was only here because of previous events related to the crystal stone, which had triggered a restriction on her speaking. She was finally free to say more now.
Shen Ning focused on the scenery, though there wasn’t much worth seeing here.
Most of the buildings were short and shabby, occasionally interspersed with a few bungalows.
Young children played by following adults, trying to find things to do—sometimes it seemed no better than a mining area.
Twin Star Town, Twin Star Town…
“Xu Chuyao, why is it called Twin Star Town?” one of the girls asked casually.
The Town Warden turned back. “About the town’s name—I actually asked the original residents here, but I myself only came later. The young people here don’t know either. Only some elderly folks say that the town once produced two very talented young prodigies, shining like twin stars. That’s how the name came about. But when I asked who exactly they were, no one could say.”
An unverifiable local legend—it might be true, or it might be an old tale passed down by merchants or neighbors, nothing more than gossip.
“Twin Star.”
Shen Ning read those two words, feeling like she’d heard them before somewhere in Center City, but couldn’t quite recall.
Since the memory was so vague, it probably wasn’t anything important.
If the girls had been paying more attention, they’d have noticed the three chatterboxes who had been talking just moments ago suddenly falling silent as if dead, not uttering a word.
“Ladies, we’ve arrived.” The Town Warden stopped in front of a modest Western-style building.
“This is the place.”
Xu Chuyao thanked him and, along with Shen Ning, entered.
The Security Department operated independently from the municipal system, so its office was better equipped—proof of decent treatment.
At the entrance, a few guards idled, playing poker when no one was around.
When they spotted the visitors, they immediately stood up and called out.
“Stop! What’s your business?”
Xu Chuyao showed her ID, then asked, “Are you with this unit?”
Of course—they were guarding the Security Department of Twin Star Town.
But when the guards saw the title “Special Substance Disposal Office Chief” on the ID, they were speechless for a while.
They didn’t recognize that job title, but they did notice the three-star emblem on the badge—his own department’s leadership only had two stars, and those were higher rank.
Xu Chuyao took back her ID and beckoned Shen Ning forward, walking inside as if no one else was there.
This time, no one tried to stop them; the guards stood formally in line and saluted politely.
The three men each gave a slightly different salute; one even raised his right hand at a forty-five-degree angle.
At that moment, Wen Fang, who had just received the news, saw the two young women push through the door.
She glanced briefly at the newcomers, then composed herself and said calmly,
“The illustrious Xu Chuyao and Shen Ning—you’ve come for a visit. What is your purpose?”
Those two names sounded as imposing as thunder in her ears.
There was no other reason—since the Supreme Society decided to take the global Spirit Power stage, they had carried out two major operations: the Small Gang Clean Sweep and the Crystal Stone Siege.
Both had been completely dismantled by these two.
In theory, Wen Fang should pretend not to recognize them to keep things discreet, but since they were already famous, overdoing it wasn’t an option. So she spoke directly.
“This isn’t a small matter, indeed.”
Xu Chuyao stepped forward.
“The higher-ups require a report regarding the gangs in Twin Star Town.”
Wen Fang frowned, “Gangs?”
“What’s that?”
“We found a member of the Small Gang during the Center City raid. He came from the Green Star district of Youfang, and according to his testimony, the local faction provided fresh blood to the gang. Therefore, the higher-ups want you to come here and explain the gang management.”
Hearing this, Wen Fang finally understood a little.
“But I only took office here three years ago,” she said skeptically. “Three years ago, Twin Star Town was re-divided under the main city’s jurisdiction. All gang connections were dismantled and removed.”
“That’s exactly right, ma’am,” Xu Chuyao replied confidently.
“The dissolution of the gangs and handling of previous gang members is something you should have overseen since taking office. If many became Small Gang members, it means this management failed, and you must come to explain.”
Her argument was reasonable. Wen Fang couldn’t deny it and had no choice but to stand.
“May I ask when I should…”
“Right now,” Xu Chuyao interrupted, crossing her arms arrogantly. “We drove over here. You can return today—there’s no need to stay overnight in this poor place.”
He clearly acted the part of the city official with flair.
At this point, Wen Fang had no choice but to gather her things and follow them downstairs.
She originally planned to delegate the work, but after thinking it over, she felt there wasn’t much to delegate.
Security work in Twin Star Town was flexible—whether they managed it or not, no one cared.
This was all about reporting to the higher-ups, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
She thought to herself as they walked along the road beneath the Western-style building, heading toward the municipal building.
Her pace slowed.
“Something’s not right.”
Indeed, security work here had always been a formality.
Ordinary fights and a few deaths happened regularly, yet no one ever cared.
So why suddenly raise issues about some gang members now?
As a Supreme Society member, she knew the Small Gang members’ backgrounds well.
They’d been eliminated in the town, county, and main city—everyone had been dealt with.
“Xu Chuyao, may I ask about this Small Gang issue?” Wen Fang asked, still uneasy.
“It’s been so long, why bring it up now?”
She recalled the Small Gang member was caught during the Center City raid, yet the clowns were cleared out long ago.
If they wanted to investigate, why hadn’t they done so before? Why come now?
Xu Chuyao shrugged.
“How would I know? That’s an order from above. Stop dawdling; hurry up.”
He was rushing her, but Wen Fang, with her doubts, couldn’t pick up the pace.
Something was wrong.
Xu Chuyao noticed her hesitation and knew she was suspicious.
Her explanation was plausible for ordinary outsiders, but for insiders familiar with the situation, it didn’t add up.
Faced with the unexpected, Xu Chuyao chose to act decisively.
“Something’s off, Xu Chuyao. How could you not know? You’re the person in charge of the Small Gang affairs…”
This shocked Wen Fang—she shouldn’t have known about this as Town Warden unless she’d heard it from Supreme Society insiders.
Xu Chuyao turned with a bright, mischievous smile:
“You’re right, Wen Fang.”
Why smile? Because if, after your second ten pulls, two glowing things appear, you’d smile too.
Finally, after three failed summons, luck favored Xu Chuyao.
Wen Fang didn’t understand the smile and was still tangled in her earlier doubts: “Right, right?”
“Yes, you’re right. We weren’t sent just to report on your work. We discovered your true identity and planned to arrest you in the city, but thanks to this Supreme Society member’s early warning—”
Xu Chuyao suddenly shouted, “Shen Ning, attack!”
Deadly!
The sudden move caught Wen Fang off guard; her heart skipped a beat, but she quickly reacted.
She formed several Spirit Power tendrils from the ground, launching them at the white-haired girl.
The battle’s focus was clear: Wang Ke was a genius on the battlefield, a Small Gang veteran, a Three Defense Spirit Power User with outstanding talent and a record-breaking fighter.
At that moment, a sharp whistle pierced the air, and instinctively, she turned around.
She saw a powerful woman charging at her with twin saber-like blades, lightning flashing along the chains wrapped around them.
