“Ninth Saintess…”
Omili stared blankly at Truth and murmured, Damn, she can’t be the first Saintess in history to be assassinated, right? And to be killed right under her own guard!
She had only gone to say a few words to Aisia, yet this eighth-rank Assassin Fish managed to strike directly—completely unbelievable!
“Ah…”
Truth lowered her head and glanced at the bloodstained stiletto on her chest, quietly puzzled.
Someone actually tried to attack her the night before the Divine Selection ceremony.
Looks like the Goddess of Life’s deterrence isn’t as strong as everyone thought.
It took only two seconds for the Assassin to break through the church’s Sanctuary and stab her in the back.
Truth guessed the attacker’s strength was below ninth-rank, probably eighth-rank.
So an eighth-rank dared to come for an assassination? Reckless fool!
But before turning hostile, she decided to see what the Elementalist in the distance would do. That timely arrival was probably the Saintess’s secret guard.
Mages and Elementalists are fundamentally different.
The former relies on mana to cast magic and simulate elemental forces; the latter directly wields elemental power.
The complex reactions between elements are beyond what a Mage can imitate.
Take Omili’s current Skill, for example. She crouched slightly, then a flicker of shadow and pale light flashed around her.
In the blink of an eye, Omili vanished from sight.
She slipped into Shadow Space, disappearing from the eyes of both Truth and the Assassin of Wangsheng City.
Then, as if seamlessly connected, Omili instantly reappeared behind the Wangsheng City Assassin!
So fast! Truth was stunned by the speed and quickly deduced this Skill wasn’t mere acceleration—it was instantaneous teleportation.
Bolstered by spatial elements, Omili executed Shadow Space Warp, catching the Wangsheng City Assassin off guard.
At the same time, her left hand carved a Meltflame Scar on the latter’s body, a wound burning at nearly a thousand degrees Celsius.
This was the pinnacle of ninth-rank Elementalist’s fire element power.
If the opponent’s defensive gear was below Epic level, the strike would break through in one hit and cut them in half on the spot.
Omili refused to believe Wangsheng City would equip this Assassin Fish with Epic or above equipment!
Her Meltflame Scar hit the Assassin’s afterimage.
“Vanish Skill… when did she activate it?!” Omili gasped.
How did the Assassin react so quickly? No, it was anticipation—she predicted Omili’s attack!
In front of Truth, the Assassin in a black-and-blue floral dress reappeared in a streak of light, her cold eyes scanning Truth up and down.
Before Omili’s next strike landed, the Assassin grabbed Truth’s Priest Robe of the Goddess of Life and disappeared into Shadow Space.
Omili hurriedly entered Shadow Space as well, but aside from a faint scent of blood, she sensed nothing else.
“Damn it…”
……
Five minutes later, a small bird emitting platinum light flew into Aisia’s carriage like a little glowing bulb.
The Saintess immediately recognized it as Omili’s little pet, Shining Bird.
The Shining Bird perched on Aisia’s bedside and chirped twice, then began speaking clearly:
“Long story short, the situation is urgent. Truth has been captured by an Assassin from Wangsheng City. The Divine Selection ceremony tomorrow may not proceed. I need you to be ready at any time to stabilize the followers.”
“And remember to inform the Goddess of Life. I’m going to track Truth now. Maybe by sunrise, I can retrieve her body and bring it back.”
“What?!”
The amount of information Omili’s words carried momentarily overwhelmed Aisia’s mind, but she quickly understood. She hurriedly asked:
“Should I wait here for you to bring back the body?”
As a Saintess, Aisia knew exactly what Omili meant by “bringing back the body.”
Every follower knew the Goddess possessed the Fountain of Life, capable of resurrecting the dead—but with two conditions.
The deceased’s Soul and Body must be at least eighty percent intact; otherwise, the revived one might not truly be Truth.
Yet, few had actually seen the Goddess use the Fountain. Omili guessed the cost of resurrection was so high that even a deity might hesitate.
Still, if the target was the Ninth Saintess, the Goddess of Life should consent, right?
And Wangsheng City definitely knew this, which explained their crude tactic: damage bits here, bits there, scatter parts everywhere.
“Alright, wait for my news.”
Inside the cathedral, after contacting Aisia, Omili hesitated for a moment.
Her eyes gradually turned pale red as she drew on one of the Forbidden Elements: Blood Element.
The lingering blood scent in Shadow Space stirred restlessly.
“Only the blood scent can be tracked now. Looks like I have no choice but to use Forbidden Element… Good thing I secretly learned some Blood Element before.”
Omili strained to sense Truth’s blood. After a while, multiple bursts of light flashed in Deya’s sky, appearing and disappearing rapidly. These were Omili’s continuous Shadow Space Warps. Powered fully by spatial elements, each warp could instantly transport her three kilometers.
Truth had no idea where she was being taken. The Assassin from Wangsheng City was moving in and out of Shadow Space with her, visibly nervous, seemingly trying to evade Omili’s pursuit.
“Hey, do you really need to be this tense?” Truth tugged at the Assassin’s sleeve, who blinked in surprise.
You’re being kidnapped, pierced through the chest by me—shouldn’t you be crying and shouting “Help!” or “It hurts!” or something?
The Assassin ignored Truth, so she continued:
“You were pretty good just now, anticipating the Elementalist’s attack and dodging early. Have you fought her before? By the way, why didn’t you strike back? You had a chance to stab her in the back.”
“Although her level is higher, even a high-level Elementalist is fragile. Don’t you have any combat experience? You didn’t even calculate the damage you could deal, stabbed too shallow.”
Someone who can’t even calculate damage isn’t worthy to be an Assassin. Back when Truth leveled up, even the passing dogs got a couple of slashes to test the damage.
“Shut up!”
The Wangsheng City Assassin lost patience. “You’re just a little Priest; how dare you lecture me, an eighth-rank Assassin from the Wangsheng Stream?”
“I’m used to being mocked for not winning face-to-face against those at my level, but now even a Priest without mid-level rank dares to look down on me? I’m not like you, casually healing a few people and leveling up. Do you know how hard it is for an Assassin to reach eighth-rank?!”
Unlike Truth, who could respawn in the main city after death, the cost of trial and error for an Assassin is far too high. Every assassination is like dancing on the blade’s edge—one slip, and they’re reincarnated in another world.
So today, Assassin academia focuses on “how to escape elegantly after a failed assassination” rather than “how to assassinate.” They sacrifice high burst damage and instead choose various efficient movement Skills.
Five hundred years later, most people prefer calling Assassins “Scouts,” while the traditional Assassin profession lurks in the shadows serving major powers worldwide.
The one who captured Truth was Wangsheng City’s strongest Assassin.
After leaping out of Shadow Space again, she casually dropped Truth onto an open field.
“Sorry, but to stop the gods from trampling on us recklessly, today you must die here.”
Truth was about to stand up when the Assassin’s stiletto pierced her chest again—this time from the front—accompanied by the Assassin’s shout: “Burst!”
Truth felt her chest burn fiercely as a raging power exploded inside her body with a “boom.”
In an instant, Truth shattered into a flower carved from blood and bone fragments.
“Huff…”
The Assassin finally exhaled in relief as she looked at the scattered pieces.
The mission was complete.
Killing an innocent and kind girl personally was more painful than she expected.
Although the Goddess of Life was no saint, even demons knew her Saintesses were kind and selfless one after another, so personally killing a Saintess was truly…
“No, I can’t think like that. They’re just tools the Goddess of Life uses to gather faith. For a brighter future, they must die!”
Blame her for being chosen by the Goddess as a Saintess.
The Wangsheng City Assassin exhaled a few times and planned to collect half the body before the ninth-rank secret guard arrived, then scatter the remains worldwide for beasts to consume or let rot.
Only this could prevent the Ninth Saintess from being resurrected by the Goddess’s mysterious Fountain.
But as she bent to pick up the first fragment, she noticed a faint blood thread shooting out from it. Not just this fragment—every piece emitted blood threads that wove together into a strange web!
“What?”
The Assassin took two steps back in shock. What was going on?! She had never seen anything like this. Then, accompanied by writhing movement, the blood-thread-connected fragments quickly contracted.
From bones, organs, to muscles and hair, Truth reappeared before the Assassin completely intact, her silver-white hair and red eyes unblemished, acting as if nothing had happened and even sneezing:
“By the way, what’s your name? I’ll try to make sure you die… Hey? Where’s my robe?!”
